L1: Invite them both, warn the ex-SIL, let her make her choice. I like Matilda's idea of going out for coffee after the wedding.

L2: "Pray for us as you must, but please, don't make us feel bad because we don't believe in that."

Why do people DO that? I don't understand why sine "religious" people push others into doing what they want them to do in they way or prayer or worship. That's a private matter. It isn't very Christian of them.

L3: Speaking to people about a situation who do not have a vested interest in the situation is a good way to get focus and separate emotion from reality.

Pellen,
If someone ever invited me to a mosque, you better believe I would go and have a look see for myself.
That being said, I'm pretty excited for Pope Francis. You know he's a Jesuit, don't you. I think they made a good choice. And anyone who disagrees can go pound salt, for all I care.

At church when it's time to pray, I keep my head up, look straight forward, no hands together.

No where in the letter did she give an example of these people "pushing" their religion on her. Religious people AREN'T pushy, it's only in your head.

Oh, I don't know, maybe because they DON'T BELIEVE IN JESUS!

Why do non-religious people have this desire to show everyone where they stand? Why do you have such a sense of self-importance? Do you really think, and I mean really, that people MUST know what YOUR religious affiliation, or lack thereof, is all about? Do you crave that type of attention? I find that rather sad.

Exactly. Its those damn atheists who keep knocking on my door every Sunday to hand me their little pamphlets. And when I'm downtown drinking, its those damn atheists who are screaming about the end of the world.

L1: Do you even realize that you're going to be so busy that day that you'd be lucky to get 5 minutes to talk to your SIL? I'd say invite her, but if she doesn't go, that's cool, and invite her out to coffee after the wedding and continue to be her friend.
L2: Um, what? Why is this even a stressor? Somebody says "I'm praying for Bob.", you say "Thank you." and move along.
Matilda for the win on both L1 and L2.

LW1's SIL knows that the brother will be at the wedding; his presence alone may be enough to deter her from going. I would definitely give her the heads up that he is bringing a date.(We don't know for sure if it's the sleazy tramp that was sleeping him before the separation.) Issue an "and guest" invitation to SIL and let her decide if she wants to go. If I were her, I would send my regrets and a nice gift.

No, they're just pushy in their attempts to ban Christmas and sue schools over Christmas plays.

It's a matter of when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Your in church for whatever reason, what's the harm in looking down at the floor during prayer time?

If you're bowing your head during prayer, how are you seeing her looking straight ahead? So why would you care?

What is the harm? Seems to me that walking out to go get a drink of water would be less disruptive, and by doing what you do, you are being disruptive.
