The price of intervention

What are the risks, costs and consequences of direct US military involvement in the Syrian conflict?

General Dempsey assessed the risks and benefits of five military options: Arming and training opposition troops that would cost $500m a year; then there is limited air strikes, establishing a no-fly zone, creating buffer zones inside Syria, and controlling the government's chemical arms.

These last four options would each cost around $1bn a month.

U.S. military intervention in the Syrian civil war is a bad idea no matter how you look at it.

1. It will be expensive in money.

2. Most of Assad's enemies are not our friends. True, Iran supports Assad. Most of Syria's large Christian minority are also supporters of the secular-nationalist Assad regime. The single most powerful element among Assad's enemies are Sunni Islamists supported by Wahhabi Saudi Arabia and al-Qaeda.

3. Only 2 kinds of government can rule Syria. One is an authoritarian secular-nationalist regime like Assad's. The other is an Islamist regime like the Taliban.
