<quoted text>He was over-simplifying it. Of course there is massive corporate greed. What you described, however, was corporate laziness and/or lack of talent. It's cheaper to produce 'Pawn Stars' or shows about hillbillies than documentaries and people like them thar hilbilly shows!. That's not greed. It's just recognizing there is a market for cheap trinkets rather than jewelry.
Corporate greed is McDonald's selling meat-related products as 'mea't, making $8.5 billion (with a B!) in profits and getting people to post on the internet that fair wages for labor would be "socialism, dangit" and cause Big Mac's to be expensive. Greed is also Wall Street bankers getting $91 billion (B again!) in bonuses a few short years removed from getting duped into selling houses to people who couldn't afford them, BY people who couldn't afford them, thus, crashing the economy. Well, maybe that's stupidity? It smells like greed. Seems to pay the same.
Yes, Virginia, there IS corporate greed. It just sounds so much better when we call it 'capitalism' and say that kids with a lemonade stand is no different than Exxon. It's nothing personal, it's just business.
I had a successful business career, and i can't agree that it is just business......it was never profit over nationalism this much before.....for the same reason that outsourcing was a common election talking point.....Maybe i should be more specific as far as the inclusion of what are now multi-national corporations...i appreciate your opinion and will give you an example.....Wife and i are returning from up north and in Tennessee we start seeing Mayfield Dairy....famous ice cream...we tour the plant and it was great,,,,they even give you some free ice cream....My wife buys a ceramic coffee mug in the Gift shop....$6 and it's nice yellow with their big cowface and the logo in brown.....Months later i am washing it and notice the dreaded Made In China.......Now, you and i both know that souvenier mug probably cost 50 cents to make, probably much less....Now i ask how much profit did the Dairy need to make, in order to not buy an American coffee mug? Or even, why could'nt we compete with China on that item, at a high $6 retail price?...This isn't the best example, but hopefully you get the direction......Profit has'nt been out front to that degree, ever in my business life.....

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Home from family. It is exhausting. Mom cries because her secret santa didn't get her anything. It was my youngest niece who is making it or something and left it at home and told mom that yesterday; granny said she mentioned it today.
Mom upset also because neither of the nieces hugged her goodbye. They wouldn't me either if I didn't grab them and force it. They are moody teenagers! She never had any because I was an awesome teen. It's true--I never got mouthy until I left the house.

Tomorrow (25th) I am staying HOME in PJs, drinking hot cocoa and watching cheesy movies. It might even get in the 60's.

Merry Christmas or happy Wednesday to all... Had a nice Christmas Eve with the boys; they are about at the perfect age for this: old enough to get it and young enough to threaten that Santa isn't coming....

PE - good luck cooking your goose, and hope the sauce is good too (whatever sauce you need).

Red - good luck... They wouldn't send you of you didn't need something at the hospital... They will do well by you.

The rest of you- love the ones you're with and call the ones who aren't with you....

Just to offer a different(and i think, more likely) perspective. I would bet the Dairy used a company that was US based or internet based that specialized corporate logo crap and paid little mind to where that company obtains its materials. The merchandise company may have gotten the mugs for 50 cents, but sold the finished merchandise to the dairy company for 2.50 a piece.

Just drove 4 hours to parents. Christmas presents in the morning, followed by my mom' s annual mega all day brunch, followed by me and the wife heading back home...and leaving the kids with grandma & grandpa! FOR A WEEK!

WHOOOOOOOOO!

Sleeping in. No responsibility. Going out on adult dates. Going out on New years eve!

Merry Christmas, regs!

Today I worked - albeit from home - for much of the day, then went to Christmas Eve candlelight service, then out to dinner with D. We're going to bake chocolate chip cookies in a few minutes... Some for tomorrow, some for right now. I only had 1.25 (maybe 1.33) mojito at dinner so I'm debating opening a bottle of wine. A is coming over tomorrow with a lasagna. I'm hoping the rain stays away, I'd like to do some Christmas hot-tubbing.

I'm back home and on my way to tipsy. J just made eggnog, so that will take me all the way. It's just him and Me tomorrow after the "kids" leave, so...sleeping in...a movie, perhaps. It could get wild.

Straw poll. Maybe I've asked before.

Big present.

From Santa or mom & dad?

Santa. Santa only lasts for a few years and eventually they will know that all of the big presents were from Mom&Dad anyway.

Which movie?
I saw Frozen. I liked it. I had fun picking out the allusions to other movies/advertisements and stuff in it. Interesting twist at the end.
Not a spoiler, but grownups have one idea who the villain is and little kids seem to have another.. Cool. Disney with depth.
Have a good one
I don't know. Don't really care. Whatever is playing about 2:00 will do. Been a really tough holiday season for me this year for some reason. Harder than the past three, but other people are going through stuff this year and I don't want to feel sorry for myself. Had a minor break down earlier when someone tried to tell me that having family that they can't see all he time is worse than having a dead child. Ok, not really all that minor. Better now but still wishing it would just get the hell over.

Santa. What Mimi said.
Also, I remember the last year I really believed in Santa that he brought us both bikes.
My dad rigged some bells to further the illusion, and we ran out when we heard them to find our bikes on the porch.
The bike is long gone, but the effort he went to in getting and setting up the surprise to give me one more year has been the real present.
Happy Christmas y'all.

Shows how strong you really are that you're not waiting for someone to bail you out right now. I think I'd be facing assault charges.

Santa, especially if your kids are still way into the Santa thing.
