Chanukah is over, so Merry Christmas.

Doctor wants me to go into the ER. Um, no, I think I'll resist that. Left the nurse a VM msg with a counteroffer. We'll see how that goes.

Okay, something isn't right, so as soon as my brother gets here, I'm off to the ER. Doctor's orders.

Gotta gather up stuff real quick. Thank goodness for smart phones and ipads.

Which movie?

I saw Frozen. I liked it. I had fun picking out the allusions to other movies/advertisements and stuff in it. Interesting twist at the end.

Not a spoiler, but grownups have one idea who the villain is and little kids seem to have another.. Cool. Disney with depth.

Have a good one

So. I am doing a goose for tomorrow. Much bigger production than I counted on.

I have gathered recipes and techniques from a couple sources.

I had to blanch or parboil the thing today. It needs to air dry so the skin crisps. At the moment it is sitting upright on my tube cake pan a la Race's beer can chicken. I will probably need to go at it with the hairdryer later. Hopefully before my husband gets home or I will never hear the end of it (What the h*** are you doing? Blowing a goose?!) Of all the things I ever considered having to sneak past him, this was definitely not on the list.

I bought it frozen (thank you Domincks closing 50% off sale). I find I have to pluck the remaining pin feathers or feather stalks. Not hard once it was blanched but it is like a bird full of eyebrow tweezing with only gray hairs. Yummmm.

I also now know where the term goose flesh comes from. Possibly TMI.

The rest of the menu?

Honey baked ham contributed via gift card from my sister's company.
A roasted turkey breast for those who are not adventurous or can't live without white meat.

Not sure about stuffing yet- my BIL is gluten intolerant and I could do wild rice stuffing and my grocery store does have chestnuts.

(Blowing a goose and roasting nuts ? Santa only comes once a year, what ? Oh yeah, food)

Will roast potatoes in the goose fat.

Cumberland sauce aka currant jelly with shallots, port and orange rind and seasonings

Green beans. will leave some plain for my husband who is fussy about his beans.

Either stamped carrots or Brussels sprouts with pomegranate molasses. Very good. and the tartness will go with the goose.

SIL is bringing her traditional cranberry jello molds

My sister is bringing an appetizer- I will supplement

My niece ( age almost 28) and her brother ( age 25) have been advised they are grownups now. They are collaborating n a dessert. I will supplement and make sure there is something BIL-friendly, i.e. gluten free..

Costco has some seasonal Jack Daniels and apple cider liqueur. I got a bottle. We shall see how that works out. I have alternatives ( BIL introduced me to Amaretto with key lime juice over ice. Not bad. I have to remember to make ice ( its about 0 here. I'll do that on the porch I think.

This is the first Christmas in 27 years without kids in the house. It has been a effort to put up a tree. Both my girls are in SF. Their Christmas gift is tickets to Nutcracker ( supplemented with Restaurant.com coupons)

I am off to blow my goose.

May stop by later.

I will tell you how the goose turned out.

Dammit. Hope it's a quick visit for you.

I'm about to head to the in-laws for Christmas dinner. Maybe I'll have some stories to keep you entertained. Already got into it with my SIL once and they've only been here since Sunday. Picking a meal or restaurant is a goddamn ordeal with her, every single time. They're leaving tomorrow morning, thankfully.

The nice thing about going to my in-laws is that I don't have to get all dolled up. The t-shirt I slept in plus some jeans from the bathroom floor? Done! Not wearing my good coat over there, either. Cat + smoke + fireplace smell = laundry and a shower when we're done.

I think that many corporations in the United States...previously had a enough profit is sufficient mentality.....but somewhere along the line, only massive profits were acceptable.....even in television....example: We have a local news show at noon, best weatherman i have ever seen....it has 16 minutes of news and 14 minutes of commercials and self-serving program previews.....that is just one example.....Perhap's i am just a bit older, and well remember a different time.....
Re: the news- some of us are old enough to remember when the news was, THE NEWS, and not judged by ratings much. Then they decided it was supposed to also be entertainment, and it went downhill from there.
I get more torqued about the decay of the news than I do about the reality shows, and those irritate me no end. They're generally stupid, and they take work away from REAL actors and writers.

<quoted text>He was over-simplifying it. Of course there is massive corporate greed. What you described, however, was corporate laziness and/or lack of talent. It's cheaper to produce 'Pawn Stars' or shows about hillbillies than documentaries and people like them thar hilbilly shows!. That's not greed. It's just recognizing there is a market for cheap trinkets rather than jewelry.
Corporate greed is McDonald's selling meat-related products as 'mea't, making $8.5 billion (with a B!) in profits and getting people to post on the internet that fair wages for labor would be "socialism, dangit" and cause Big Mac's to be expensive. Greed is also Wall Street bankers getting $91 billion (B again!) in bonuses a few short years removed from getting duped into selling houses to people who couldn't afford them, BY people who couldn't afford them, thus, crashing the economy. Well, maybe that's stupidity? It smells like greed. Seems to pay the same.
Yes, Virginia, there IS corporate greed. It just sounds so much better when we call it 'capitalism' and say that kids with a lemonade stand is no different than Exxon. It's nothing personal, it's just business.
I had a successful business career, and i can't agree that it is just business......it was never profit over nationalism this much before.....for the same reason that outsourcing was a common election talking point.....Maybe i should be more specific as far as the inclusion of what are now multi-national corporations...i appreciate your opinion and will give you an example.....Wife and i are returning from up north and in Tennessee we start seeing Mayfield Dairy....famous ice cream...we tour the plant and it was great,,,,they even give you some free ice cream....My wife buys a ceramic coffee mug in the Gift shop....$6 and it's nice yellow with their big cowface and the logo in brown.....Months later i am washing it and notice the dreaded Made In China.......Now, you and i both know that souvenier mug probably cost 50 cents to make, probably much less....Now i ask how much profit did the Dairy need to make, in order to not buy an American coffee mug? Or even, why could'nt we compete with China on that item, at a high $6 retail price?...This isn't the best example, but hopefully you get the direction......Profit has'nt been out front to that degree, ever in my business life.....
