des·e·crate
transitive verb \ˈde-si-ˌkr āt\

: to damage (a holy place or object): to treat (a holy place or object) with disrespect

Above - that's from Webster's Dictionary.

First of all, it was not the American flag and you know it. The fact that it has a likeness to the American flag (and not an exact replica) that is being used to show equality is NOT something that damages nor disrespects the flag.

If you think otherwise, ask yourself why. Is it the subject matter that damages it? The thought of equality that damages it?

I am grateful for all the good men and women who have served for our country and fought for freedoms.

Can't some things be above politics? Does something that many folks on both sides of the issue find sacred, such as the United States flag, really need to be rainbow? It's something revered in this country. Can't one get the point across that they support gay marriage by just using the standard rainbow flag?
The rainbow flag, as you know, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements. It has been in use since the 1970s. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches.

It is used worldwide, people.

Yes, I think one can get their point across without changing the colors of the flag. However, I will support someone's right to create a piece of art that represents their feelings and ideology. That is the beauty of our country. We don't imprison or kill people for displaying drawings that we don't like.

IMO, I think that when people use statements or images for shock value, they lose much of the message because people are too focused on the shock. Not everyone shares my opinion, though, and they are free to express themselves however they like. They just have to be prepared for any reactions from their audience.

Thanks Captain Obvious. Um, nice try, but no cigar.

Race wasn't complaining about you using a mere rainbow flag and none of my comments were directed at your use of a mere rainbow flag (your reading comprehension must have caused you to miss that).

Race was complaining about your use of a modified form of our nation's flag and my comments were directed at why it's not really appropriate to use a modified form of our nation's flag to further and show support for an individuals political view point, especially on a highly divisive issue.

If you want to show support using a flag of some sort, you don't need to use a modified form of our nation's flag ... something that many folks find sacred. You have the option of using the traditional LGBT flag. If you don't care if you offend folks, like the morons who protest and hold signs that say god hates gay people, then do what you wish ... It's a 1st Amendment right to be offensive in many circumstances.

No one, least of all me, is talking about imprisoning or killing folks or saying that it’s not someone’s 1st Amendment right to display such a flag.

What I am saying is that some things like our nation’s flag should not be used in in such a manner. Just like someone who is against gay marriage should not take our nation’s flag and use the stars to spell out “god hates gays,” regardless of whether this represents their feelings and ideology. It's just not appropriate (which is not the same as saying it is illegal).

If you cant see that taking an American flag and substituting the stripes with rainbow stripes, then running it up a flag pole as a statement telling all the world that you are not just an american, but a GAY american is a desecration, then I submit you to be a total moron.
NO, it is not an American flag, but it is being used as a substitute for one, and that is the desecration.

The American flag is to be the top most flag on any flag pole, below it you can fly whatever the hello you want. By that flag being topmost, the person is stating that they care not a sheit for the lives and blood of the people who died giving them the right to be suchanasshole.

Are you sure your not sam? You seem to have a real problem admitting when your wrong.

Thanks Captain Obvious II for explaining to all of us that she didn’t use “the” red white and blue, American flag. Had you not come out of your paint huffing stupor to explain this, we would have never figured this out.
A noted observer wrote:
<quoted text>Should politicians wear flag pins as they do? Isn't that sort of a modified flag used for political purposes, Captain Oblivious?
Apparently you are too effing dumb to realize that a non-modified American flag is not sort of like a modified American flag.

Despite your jerkiness, I was really worried about you.

The photos of just the slabs and flooring of several homes makes me wonder about the construction of those houses. They just desintegrated...

The news channel I was watching mentioned they were "manufactured homes".

Well, a house isn't gonna hold up too well when an F4 tornado passes through it. A different tornado hit my area, I think it was an F2. Luckily it hit the next town over and my only damage was a busted fence post.

But you have a point about the construction. They use fewer nails and cheaper-grade materials than they used to. And still housing prices are ridiculously high.

dog, race...

So exactly what constitutes a desecration of the flag and lady liberty in your book? Any depiction that supports a position you don't share? OR ANY artistic deviation?

Is famed artist Peter Max offensive?

https://www.google.com/search...

Peter Max has painted for six U.S. Presidents and his art is on display in Presidential Libraries and in U.S. Embassies. Max has painted our Lady Liberty annually since America's Bicentennial and in 2000 a collage of his Liberties adorned over 145 million Verizon phone books.

Okay, Scarlet actually summed it up perfectly. When you use a depiction of our flag or national symbols in such a way to create "shock value," you are taking away from your issue and instead pzzing people off.

That is counter-productive to the very thing you are trying to get support for.

Instead, I, and half the country that agrees with me, are more UNlikely to support your cause BECAUSE of the way you're presenting your case. When you turn the United States flag into a rainbow, when you turn our symbols for freedom and justice into lesbian porn, I, and many others like me, find your actions, and therefor your cause, deplorable.

Maybe more than 30% of states would support gays, if you people didn't act that way?

Think about it.

You want respect? Show America some respect.

Instead you're shoving it in our faces how much you hate America because a majority of Americans don't share YOUR views. Turn it around. Show respect, and you might get some.

I'm confused. I don't see anything gay-related in Toj's flag avatar. Is that a separate issue or did it get changed?
What I see is an American flag-esque heralding free speech, something our nation used to be founded on.

I am very patriotic and love my country, but I'm not psycho offended by every little thing. Throwing a real flag on the ground and steppin on it (looking at you, Lil Wayne) or burning it, sure, but to make use of one to promote the very values that were once accepted in this nation...please.

We are getting offended by everything lately. Our nation is no longer recognizable. We should be happy the 3 colors are right! We should put the same energy into protecting the Constitution that is being raped.

She previously had an avatar of the American flag with rainbow colored stripes, instead of just red and white. That is what started this discussion.
