I ran across this article that argues that Blacks have better mental health than whites.

I am not familiar with the website or the author. I had read the NY Times article cited and it is a reasonable point to have pulled from what I recall.

Anyone have any insight or anecdotal observtions?

Also, anyone have any comments on the substance, which essentially says that Mental Illness ( caps intended) is a white man's disease?

Why does it only compare Black and White? How does this data compare to Asian-Americans or Hispanics? Also, is the author claiming this is a uniquely American observation or is this standard globally?

Having spent most of my formative years on the Central Coast of California, this season was the first reason I fell in love with NJ. The lady across the street from us uses a woodburning stove to heat her house. I love walking outside and smelling that!
For the record….o in Jersey talk,:-) not for nuttin', but the central California is the most beautiful place in the country, bar none and it has seasons, just no snow. I regret moving away from there every single day of my life. Everywhere from Pismo to Monterey holds a special place in my heart and memory.(Santa Maria on down is LA AFAIC. <shrug>

That's a nice story, but I mean, people are straight up d1cks to anyone in a customer service role. I'm sort of surprised he's worked there for 7 years and that's the worst that has happened to him.

Something just didn't ring true to me on this. I kept thinking as I was reading this article -- but black people are people and there are upper class, middle class and lower class black people just as there are for white people (and hispanics, asians, etc.). I googled and was looking for something that somewhat trustworthy. I have an attention span at work of a gnat on fun stuff b/c I have to actually work so I try to be fast.:(

Anyways -- Ebony had an article on black mental health.
http://www.ebony.com/wellness-empowerment/bla...

I was really looking for something from a research hospital that would be reputable but this was like the fifth item that came back in the search so I stopped. I know, a magazine. But a magazine catering to a black readership! I'm telling you this b/c I'm going back in to see if I see something else.

A tiny little bit and nope.
Sis told Dickie last night that they have medical proof that nothing happened (as in her hymen is still intact), but that is all we know. I'm choosing to believe that for the sake of my niece, but I will always have some doubts because of the way it was handled.
We were not "permitted" to talk to the niece for fear of the lie being exposed (see my reply to Toj above) and/or forcing the niece to relate to us details of things she may or may not remember. I don't expect to ever hear anything from her, and that's OK.
I saw your response to Toj. I think you are handling it correctly insofar as your niece is concerned.

I have to say that I don't believe your sister and am inclined to think she is covering up something she did (not with your niece) which explains the long term boyfriend's abruptly leaving.

The only thing my father (who grew up here) likes about visiting is getting pizza at least once a day :) That is also pretty much the only meal that everyone in my family will eat together.

Carp. I had a response typed up, but lost it when I went to look something up. Wow, Wikipedia has a very broad definition of Central Coast http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Coast_ (California)

FTR, getting a little foggier in the morning does not constitute a seasonal change :P

Thanks. This was a good weekend for me football-wise. Schiano won and so did the Jags (I have cheered for them since the franchise started). Rutgers was off so they couldn't lose.

Similarly, in education, it's always black and white.
The Hispanics consistently score higher than blacks, and many have a language barrier.
The achievement gap (b/w) is evident by 4th grade and most of it is cultural, but no one is allowed to talk about it so nothing ever really gets changed.

We talk some hispanics down in the south, and no one mentions those Asian kids--but they usually kick butt and care about education.

I was shocked that the Jags did'nt sign Tebow....Seeing as how, filling the stadium is their biggest need and all? He would fill the stands and come in cheap, maybe...lol...

We have the largest Indian-American community in the US. Whole 'nother set of cultural issues.

Valid points. The article does not gp ito that. That is one reason for my questioning/skeptcism

I thought I pretty much nailed it. Did you know that I'm part African-American? Well, just from the waist down.

Hawaii legalized same sex marriage. State # 15. That's 42.8% of the states…almost half.
