I don't see how he can call himself a catholic if he does not believe in Jesus. That's where he lost me. That's the foundation. That's like being a vegan who chows down on steak.
Yeah, that was my sticking point. If you don't believe Jesus is the savior, you're not Christian, so you can't be Catholic. I didn't belabor it with him -- it's not worth an argument or anything, I just thought it was kind of silly.

Squishy: Just bookmarked the website for Taps on the Walls. Poet was there for over six years.

Wow. Definitely adding this to my must read list.

You may have been raised Catholic, but if you didn't baptize your kids and you don't ever go to church, then I don't understand why you would still identify yourself with that organization. I am not judging, I am just wondering.

I was raised a catholic. I never converted to any other religion. I don't denounce anything I was taught as a catholic. If someone asks what religion I am, the most accurate answer is a non-practicing Catholic. I don't say so as a way to ingratiate nor differentiate my self to people. It just is what it is. If I were to one day feel the urge to go to church, I would go to a Catholic church.

My hair is turning gray, but I still say my hair color is black.

I can understand it. I was raised Catholic, I did have my kid baptized in the religion, but I'm not practicing. I say I'm Catholic yet I don't really identify myself with the organization, per se. Although I did go to a Catholic grade school, I grew up surrounded by Catholics and there's a certain sameness to how Catholics are raised/taught. Not that it all takes, mind you.:)

Catholics are like Jews in that regard: Not practicing/following/fully still believing doesn't change things much. ;)

I have just decided that February 2013 is my last year of spending any money on coworkers' kids' fundraisers. Butter braids. GS cookies. Heggen's pizza. Those are three of the several items on our counter at work right now.

I always told myself "people bought from me when i was in school selling stuff." I did that for four years. But now I've been repaying that generosity for 25 years!

I officially resign from the purchaser of anything that your kids need to do their fun activities. Sorry, parents. If we're close, I probably buy bday and christmas gifts for your kids. That's enough.

And making this decision 2 minutes ago FEELS GREAT.

And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth.

Then He made the Earth round ... And He laughed and laughed and laughed.

FWIW, my coworkers are not pushy at all. They put forms on the counter at work and nothing gets said about them.

I don't buy from others and I don't push my kids stuff on others. I just think it's gotten ridiculous.

My mom used to drop me and my two bros off at farm & fleet and have us sell stuff outside the door when we had fundraising for baseball. We'd be decked out in our uniforms. I absolutely hated it. We'd be there for what seemed like an eternity. I won't make my kids do that.

What's even worse is they have all these fund raisers for school and tell the kids they can get all these prizes if they sell stuff. My kids came home thinking they are going to get an ipod. I told them ... no, this is a scam ... you would need to sell a bazillion of these things before you could get that ipod ... you if you work really, really hard, you might get an eraser, at best.

We have a fair at school (with carnival rides and games), fundraiser nights at various restaurants, and book fairs ... I'd much rather do stuff like that to support their school than have me or them have to pitch stuff.

someone in my wapo forum posted that at a big school band meeting, the director said "If every family gives me $15, we don't need to do any fundraisers this year." Then said it was a flurry of reaching into pockets and purses.

Call him on it? How so? When my mom visits, she still goes to church. Asking me to go is not going to get me to go. Not sure what your intended outcome of "calling him on it" is.

I'm refusing to dye my hair. I'm the laziest hair-doer on the planet and I detest the look of roots so...

Both my grandma and mom are were/are a beautiful silver so I'm going to see what happens.

I was wondering how you were going to implement your non-purchase plan without being "mean" or whatever. Glad to hear your co-workers aren't all "buy from my kid or you're not a good friend" types.
