I think this popped up last year. I'm not going to put on blackface for anything, ever, but belly dancer costumes are offensive? Rednecks? Geishas? C'mon.
""La Llorona is a folk tale, our bogeyman, our witch from our culture. That as a costume is better than the idea of someone dressing up in a sombrero or poncho and deciding 'I'm Mexican today!'" Arreola said."

I bet somewhere, a black person has gone as whitey for halloween -- like dressed in tennis whites and looking all preppy.

Can't speak for Mimi, but we weren't affected in the slightest.

My friend lives in the "highland park" neighborhood of St. Paul. It's a good-sized part of town. She got a flier from some neighborhood association last week, saying "trick or treating" would take place Saturday afternoon (this past weekend). My friend thought it was the dumbest thing and threw it away.

WTF? Why are they stifling the best holiday?

Or...go trick-or-treating in that neighborhood on Saturday and different ones on Wednesday.

My hometown has/had a lot of blue laws and is churchy, so if H-ween fell on Sunday, all the festivities were on Saturday. But it was town wide.

Well, we did it... got my gramma packed up and moved. two runs in a U-Haul van and one packed car later, she's too worn out to bitch at us. we're still doing some laundry for her (i think 5 loads down, and one to go), and she needs to unload some boxes, but she's pretty much set for the time being.

so, tomorrow, my mom & i are going out for a girls' day to celebrate and decompress.
Enjoy your day with your mom. Sounds like you have had a rough weekend, both physically and emotionally. It is good that you have each other right now.

Sending hugs and prayers your way.

They are driving me kinda crazy today, but thankfully it was my husband's scheduled day off, so it doesn't all fall on me and I'm not sitting here worried about him working at the seaport (though they could call him in, despite the state of emergency, because they have to have someone at the port at all times and we live closer than most of the other officers).

We get hit once or twice a year, but this is supposed to be one if the worst the area has seen in many years. The big concern with this storm is flooding, because of the direction the storm is coming from.

Right now I am really annoyed with the people who ignored the mandatory evacuation orders. First responders will have to risk their lives to rescue those people because of their selfishness, when they are needed in other areas. Many of our friends and family are police officers and firefighters, so these storms are particularly dangerous for them.

I don't understand that, either. It's just. A house. Grab your pictures, your computer, your pets, and GTFO.

So, I may have just bit in to another potentially expensive hobby. Going to look at a used Fuji mountain bike after work. A lot of my hockey friends also mountain bike (which, around here is "hill bike" or "slight incline bike") I figure if I don't like it, I can sell it or give it to SIL to use around campus.

I'm watching the news and they are interviewing a guy who chose to buy a house right on the beach and refused evacuation orders, but is upset that the government hasn't spent more time/money building up bulkheads to protect his family from this natural disaster. Grrr. Take some personal responsibility! I'm going to take a bath and read a book now.

Most of 'em anyways. There might be a few to "forget", you never know.:)

Isn't there always murders and stuff that people try to blame it on the conditions when a disaster occurs? I thought I saw that somewhere.

OK, so there is an article on CNN.com entitled "Sex Worker: I sleep with 5 men a day just to eat," and my first thought was, you must not be very good.
