Definitely different for me since I became a mom and since I have gotten to know my sons' friends so well. My husband and I talk about this - he is still not as empathic to others' situations, but I have become more mindful that "there but for the grace if God go I".
There was just a case of a 12 year old girl in NJ who was killed because some teenagers wanted her bike parts. Look up Autumn Pasquale. This is hitting the moms around here hard.
I read about that one. I didn't realize they had suspects in that case.

When I googled it, the article that came up was how the mom of the two boys turned her own sons in and compared it to the Jessica Ridgeway murder where the mom of her killer turned her son in.

That. Would also. Suck.

Is everyone here familiar with http://kids.woot.com/ ? Awesome site. That is the link to the kids page, but there are non-kids things. They have one deal a day, or until it is sold out.

Heh, I like the shirt page. The T-rex trying to reach the magic lamp so it can wish for big arms. And the light sabers charging.

Not saying I don't care, as a non-mom. I am sure that losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a person, and stories about bad things happening to children make me sadder than the same things happening to an adult.
But...stranger's kids dying is not going to make me cry. Just wondering if I'm a non-maternal robot or what.
Same here. Stories about horrible things happening to old people (not just regular dying since they're supposed to do that, but dying violent deaths or getting beaten and robbed and stuff) and stories about animal abuse get to me. I guess it's because I was very close to my grandmother and I have dogs.

Nick's the same way, probably a bit more than you. We watch a lot of Criminal Minds, but when the show involves kids, especially boys, especially boys up to around age 12, he can't watch, because he thinks of his own boys.
I think of mine too, but I can easily compartmentalize fiction from reality.

I'm the guy who can sit on an airplane and read an article about plane crashes without batting an eye.

I can also hear gross stories while I'm eating and I rarely get grossed out. Pictures are a different story though.

Can't do the airplane thing. Flying unmedicated, my brain works overtime making me think about plane crashes.

Gross stories are fine while eating, probably because growing up, that's when my mom would talk about so-and-so from church's colonoscopy results or the neighbor's skin cancer removal.

I can read or see anything while eating. I worked on the case of a serial killer (RObert Berdella) and read about what he did to his victims, while I ate lunch.

But I could NOT read Anne Rice's Vampire books while eating. She'd take a page or two to describe the taste and texture and smell of drinking blood so well, you KNEW she'd tasted it herself.

When J wants to gross SIL and me out, he'll go to youtube and look up either botfly removals (kinda gross) OR cyst popping (unbelievably gross). I'd rather watch childbirth of either form than that.

A twisted part of me now wants to look those up.

I read two of the books, I think. I liked them.

I also read her porno book series Beauty and the Beast. I think I ended up throwing them away (how on earth do you share them with a friend? then they'llk now I"m a perv!)

I just heard about the movies Human Centipede and HC 2. Guy creates a human centiped by sewing people's mouths to other people's buttholes.

Who will let their S.O. pop a zit on their back? Who will pop their S.O.'s back zit? Nick will have nothing to do with any of it.

I could read about crashes while on a plane. When I'm on a plane I don't even "feel" like I'm on a plane in mid air. Plus, not that many crashes happen. You're safer on a plane than in a car.

The thing is, in the news about the kids and what-not isn't fiction and is reality. It's a reality, though, that's happening to someone else. While I do react to it, if it actually happened to me if would be a tremendously worse reaction.

Okay -- didn't read carefully. You guys were talking about fiction. That's what I get for a very basic skim and assuming.

I used to with the ex, and I liked it...I don't think I could do it now. I suspect that as one gets older tolerance for yucky things declines. I should be glad I don't have grandchildren and have to change diapers now.

We like to watch Bones while eating dinner. Don't know why I find that appropriate mealtime entertainment.
