The Almighty Mess in Iraq, Courtesy of Bush and Cheney

The 2003 invasion of Iraq, the stupidest war in US history, which was rousingly backed by Congress and the media, has produced a monumental mess of mind-numbing complexity as Washington trips over its own feet. The ladies advising President Barack Obama on his Mideast policy are hopelessly befuddled.

Washington, now in a major panic over ISIS, is moving towards air strikes against Iraq using warplanes based in Kuwait and the Gulf. The US also has two full mechanized combat brigades in Kuwait. Republicans are calling for US ground forces to re-enter Iraq to shore up the widely detested Maliki regime.

While Washington dithers, its little Kurdish protectorate in northern Iraq is threatening to send its combat-effective ‘pesh merga’ fighters to battle ISIS. But this is making both Turkey, which opposes any Kurdish state, and Iran, with its own Kurdish problem, very uneasy. Iraq used to be part of the Ottoman Empire. Its vast oil reserves are a constant enticement to energy-deprived Turkey.

This awful mess can be directly traced to neoconservative strategists in Washington clustered around Vice President Dick Cheney. In 2002, their primary goal, according to Cheney, was to wreck Iraq, the most industrially advanced and progressive Arab state, so removing a major foe of Israel, and then grabbing Iraq’s oil.

Following the time-tested Roman imperial formula of ‘divide et impera’(divide and rule), Washington played Iraq’s long downtrodden Shia against its Sunni minority, igniting a wider Sunni-Shia conflict in the Arab world, notably in Syria.

In fact, Israel emerged as the sole strategic victor of the Bush/Cheney war against Iraq. That war, so far, has cost the US 4,500 soldiers killed, 35,700 wounded, 45,000 sick and over $1 trillion. Iraq lies in ruins, likely shattered beyond all attempts to put it back together. No senior American or British official has faced trial for this disastrous, trumped-up war.

Nuri Maliki has totally excluded Sunnis from power in Iraq, and uses brutal secret police and torture to repress them. Small wonder he faces a major uprising. Iraq’s oil-based economy remains in ruins. Many Iraqis believe their now wretched nation was far better off under Saddam Hussein, as brutal and clumsy as he was.

Obama was the one that pushed for the multi-lateral sanction that brought Iran to the table & came to an agreement about nuclear programs.
When some in Congress tried to add sanctions after the agreement was in place, Obama opposed these additional sanctions as they might damage the agreement in place.
Sanctions were imposed by some countries. That does not mean there was no one's buying Iran oil. Bush's invasion of Iraq & subsequent quagmire drove up that price of oil from which Iran benefitted.
To imply that Iran was not selling oil because of sanctions placed in 1979 is a blatant lie.
The fact remains that Bush's killing of Sadam strengthened Iran & increased their influence.
The subject was how Iran rose in influence.
Nice try on trying to change the subject instead of admitting you were wrong.

What follows is an accurate chronology of United States involvement in the arming of Iraq during the Iraq-Iran war 1980-88. It is a powerful indictment of the president Bush administration attempt to sell war as a component of his war on terrorism. It reveals US ambitions in Iraq to be just another chapter in the attempt to regain a foothold in the Mideast following the fall of the Shah of Iran.
Arming Iraq and the Path to War
A crisis always has a history, and the current crisis with Iraq is no exception. Below are some relevant dates.

September, 1980. Iraq invades Iran. The beginning of the Iraq-Iran war.[8]

February, 1982. Despite objections from congress, President Reagan removes Iraq from its list of known terrorist countries.[1]

December, 1982. Hughes Aircraft ships 60 Defender helicopters to Iraq.[9]

1982-1988. Defense Intelligence Agency provides detailed information for Iraq on Iranian deployments, tactical planning for battles, plans for air strikes and bomb damage assessments.[4]

November, 1983. A National Security Directive states that the U.S would do "whatever was necessary and legal" to prevent Iraq from losing its war with Iran.[1] & [15]

Donald Rumsfeld -Reagan's Envoy- provided Iraq with
chemical & biological weapons November, 1983. Banca Nazionale del Lavoro of Italy and its Branch in Atlanta begin to funnel $5 billion in unreported loans to Iraq. Iraq, with the blessing and official approval of the US government, purchased computer controlled machine tools, computers, scientific instruments, special alloy steel and aluminum, chemicals, and other industrial goods for Iraq's missile, chemical, biological and nuclear weapons programs.[14]

October, 1983. The Reagan Administration begins secretly allowing Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt to transfer United States weapons, including Howitzers, Huey helicopters, and bombs to Iraq. These shipments violated the Arms Export Control Act.[16]

November 1983. George Schultz, the Secretary of State, is given intelligence reports showing that Iraqi troops are daily using chemical weapons against the Iranians.[1]

December 20, 1983. Donald Rumsfeld , then a civilian and now Defense Secretary, meets with Saddam Hussein to assure him of US friendship and materials support.[1] & [15]

July, 1984. CIA begins giving Iraq intelligence necessary to calibrate its mustard gas attacks on Iranian troops.[19]

January 14, 1984. State Department memo acknowledges United States shipment of "dual-use" export hardware and technology. Dual use items are civilian items such as heavy trucks, armored ambulances and communications gear as well as industrial technology that can have a military application.[2]

March, 1986. The United States with Great Britain block all Security Council resolutions condemning Iraq's use of chemical weapons, and on March 21 the US becomes the only country refusing to sign a Security Council statement condemning Iraq's use of these weapons.[10]

May, 1986. The US Department of Commerce licenses 70 biological exports to Iraq between May of 1985 and 1989, including at least 21 batches of lethal strains of anthrax.[3]

May, 1986. US Department of Commerce approves shipment of weapons grade botulin poison to Iraq.[7]

March, 1987. President Reagan bows to the findings of the Tower Commission admitting the sale of arms to Iran in exchange for hostages. Oliver North uses the profits from the sale to fund an illegal war in Nicaragua.[17]

Late 1987. The Iraqi Air Force begins using chemical agents against Kurdish resistance forces in northern Iraq.[1]

February, 1988. Saddam Hussein begins the "Anfal" campaign against the Kurds of northern Iraq. The Iraq regime used chemical weapons against the Kurds killing over 100,000 civilians and destroying over 1,200 Kurdish villages.[8]

April, 1988. US Department of Commerce approves shipment of chemicals used in manufacture of mustard gas.[7]

August, 1988. Four major battles were fought from April to August 1988, in which the Iraqis massively and effectively used chemical weapons to defeat the Iranians. Nerve gas and blister agents such as mustard gas are used. By this time the US Defense Intelligence Agency is heavily involved with Saddam Hussein in battle plan assistance, intelligence gathering and post battle debriefing. In the last major battle with of the war, 65,000 Iranians are killed, many with poison gas. Use of chemical weapons in war is in violation of the Geneva accords of 1925.

Connecting Obammy's Dots

Many people are afraid to discuss Obammy's loyalties to Muslims, however, lest they be branded some type of crazy “Obama is a Muslim” truther. But let me throw out twenty “dots” and see if you can connect them into a pattern:

1. Barack Obama spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, stepson to a Muslim. His natural father was born as a Muslim in Kenya.

2. Obama romantically reminisces about his fond memories of hearing the "izan," or the Muslim call to prayer, echoing from a nearby mosque each day.

3. One of his closest friends in Chicago is a member of the Hamas terror group, funded in part by Qatar.

4. Obama claims to embrace the Christian faith, however, he attended a church for 20 years where he was taught by a preacher who sees Islam and Christianity on par with each other.

5. During his 2008 campaign, Mr. Obama saw himself as the defender of Islam in America and promised to eliminate prejudices against Muslims.

6. He asked the head of NASA (yes, NASA!) to ensure the defense of Islamic causes and to help improve their reputation.

7. Among his first overseas trips as President of the United States were to Muslim countries with secular governments: Turkey and Egypt.

8. In Turkey, he declared that America was not a Christian nation.

9. In Egypt, he humiliated his host, then-president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, by insisting that the Muslim Brotherhood, an outlawed Islamist group, occupy the front seats for his "lecture" at Cairo University.

10. President Obama has largely ignored the U.S. National Day of Prayer, which was signed into law by President Harry Truman and is recognized on the first Thursday of May.

11. Conversely, he has annually hosted Islamic leaders for an "iftar" during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

12. In 2011, he forced a sovereign nation (Egypt) under U.S. influence to accept a member of the Muslim Brotherhood as its new president, despite unofficial results that showed his opponent had actually won by a slight margin.

13. Then, after the subsequent collapse of the Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt, Mr. Obama continued to support the terrorist group - going against more than 30 million Egyptians who had sought to oust that illigitimate government.

14. He suspended aid to Egypt in retaliation for ousting the Muslim Brotherhood cabal from power - aid that was agreed upon more than 30 years prior.

15. President Obama failed to bring to justice the Islamist killers of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three others.[This article was written before the capture of Ahmed Abu Khattala]

16. Mr. Obama has recognized the Hamas coalition Palestinian government, to Israel's deep disappointment, despite our government's repeated official designation of Hamas as a terror organization.

17. In at least four cases, he appointed Muslim Brotherhood-sympathizers to his administration, instead of more moderate or secular American Muslims.

18. He met personally with the Emir of Qatar at the 2014 West Point graduation ceremony, who was supposedly there to witness the first Qatari obtain a military bachelor degree from West Point. Qatar funds various Islamic terrorist groups around the world, plus they host almost every Islamist terror misfit group in their country (including the Muslim Brotherhood). Qatar has offended so many Arab countries that even Saudi Arabia threatened to blockade it.

19. Now President Obama has entrusted Qatar with five known terrorists released from Guantanamo Bay, which he secretly exchanged for an Army deserter.

20. To top all that off, the father of the Army deserter claimed the White House for Islam by naming the name of Allah during his speech at the Rose Garden.

The Bush Doctrine Failed Twice: The Opportunity Costs of Two Gulf Wars

9/11 Misdirection

President George W. Bush should have listened to the late General Norman Schwarzkopf, who masterly game-planned the end of the First Gulf War. The general urged Bush 41 to go "the last mile," or in that case, the last 100 miles of open desert with nothing standing in the way for American troops, tanks, and helicopters to sack Baghdad and bring Saddam to trial.

Instead, a decade late and after a week of mourning the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Bush 43 went into Afghanistan War with a weak hand, with a "let's not get our troops bloody" weaker mindset, deciding to execute the hunt for bin Laden and fight with the Taliban from a distance.

What did that accomplish? Nothing more than a long war with no end in sight.

By not taking down the Taliban, Mullah Omar (he's still alive), and capturing or killing Osama bin Laden in 2001, those major mistakes were compounded and pushed forward, like bad Argentine debt. By not deploying enough troops, the war dragged on, the hunt for bin Laden went nowhere, and some 700 Taliban and al Qaeda terrorists shot their way out of a little guarded, fort-turned-prison that November.

Cooking the Evidence of War

Blinded by revenge for the assassination attempt on his father's life, George W. Bush was hell-bent on doing whatever it took to link Saddam Hussein to the "War on Terror" story thread.

With no intel from the CIA on the ground since the U.S. left Iraq in the mid 1990s, and Colin Powell branded as the PR messenger of conviction, the only evidence the former general presented to the United Nations in 2003 were a few aerial reconnaissance photos showing mobile units on flatbed trucks that were not nuclear weapons in transit. Convincing the world to go to war with Iraq -- again -- became a fool's errand, a 'march of folly' that began with a decade-long war, and a second front on the 'War on Terror' that destabilized Iraq, re-ignited the hatred of hardcore Islamic fighters toward the West, and opened old wounds between the Sunni Muslims, the Shiites, and Kurdish factions.

When no weapons of mass destruction were found inside Iraq, the world knew that the second war should never have been waged.

From Syria to Guantanamo

The fallout from the poorly executed war in Afghanistan to the war that shouldn't have taken place ended with a ripple effect across the Mid-East and the United States.

First, why did President Bush leave the hardened prisoners of Guantanamo Bay for the next U.S. president to solve? Sure, it's easy to pick on President Obama for trading five hardened Taliban leaders for an alleged deserter and POW in what looks like an unbalanced exchange. But the fault-lines lie not with the president or the Pentagon, but with the Bush Administration that failed to expedite trials, in either civilian courts or under military law. Again, President Obama is cleaning up the mess of his predecessor.

The Syrian civil war began not recently, but all the way back in 2006. It started as a water war between the cities and towns of Syria and the farmers. It picked up speed in 2008 and erupted this decade. But was the Iraq War a contributing factor to both the Syrian War and the Arab Spring of 2010?

It's hard to not legitimately link them with the Iraq War.

In 2008, this country's more than 7 million Muslims voted in record numbers, and nearly 90 percent of their votes went to Obama.

It wasn't always this way. Muslim Americans are, by and large, both socially and economically conservative. Sixty-one percent of them would ban abortion except to save the life of the mother; 84 percent support school choice. Muslims overwhelmingly support traditional marriage. More than a quarter -- over twice the national average -- are self-employed small-business owners, and most support reducing taxes and the abolition of the estate tax. By all rights they should be Republicans -- and not long ago they were. American Muslims voted two to one for George H.W. Bush in 1992. While they went for Bill Clinton by the same margin in 1996, they were brought back into the Republican fold in 2000 by George W. Bush.

If Clinton was, as the author Toni Morrison once quipped, America's first black president, Bush was, at least momentarily, the country's first Muslim president. As early as 1999, he hosted a series of meetings between Muslim and Republican leaders, and paid a visit himself to an Islamic center in Michigan -- the first and only major presidential candidate to do so. The 2000 Republican convention in Philadelphia was the first in either national party's history to include a Muslim prayer. On the campaign trail, Bush celebrated the faith of Americans who regularly attended a "church, synagogue, or mosque." After Muslim community leaders told him of their civil liberties concerns over a piece of 1996 immigration enforcement legislation signed into law by Clinton, Bush criticized it himself in one of his presidential debates against Vice President Al Gore.

The work paid off. By election day, Bush had been endorsed by eight major Muslim American organizations. He won more than 70 percent of the Muslim vote, including 46,200 ballots in Florida alone, prompting longtime conservative activist Grover Norquist -- one of the few prominent movement figures to caution against the current wave of mosque demagoguery -- to proclaim in the American Spectator that "Bush was elected President of the United States of America because of the Muslim vote."

Iraq likely isn't the last stop for ISIS
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) continued its consolidation of power on the Iraq-Syria border over the weekend, but U.S. officials and experts warn that the Sunni Islamic militants may not end its quest for power even if it takes over Iraq.
The group's name also translates to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a swath of land across the Middle East that includes Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel - and that's exactly where the militants may be headed.
One of the looming concerns was that ISIS may capture the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, although CBS News National Security Analyst and former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell said that the "blitzkrieg" toward the capital has all but stopped.
"I think they're now on a different focus than they were when they were heading towards Baghdad," he said on CBS News "Face the Nation" Sunday. That new focus could be Iraq's other neighbors in the region.
Once an offshoot of al Qaeda, ISIS became a separate entity in February 2014 when it stopped following orders from al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. Now, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., says, the two groups are like "two organized crime families" fighting for turf.
ISIS head Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi "wants more territory. He wants the Levant. He wants Lebanon. He wants Jordan. They talk about Israel," Rogers said on "Face the Nation" Sunday. "They want to expand their Islamic caliphate. They believed that because they have a piece of Syria and a huge piece of Iraq now that they are well underway to do that."
Morell echoed those concerns about ISIS influence in Jordan and Lebanon, citing the group's activity in Lebanon in recent months that includes a suicide bombing just last week. It wasn't the first attack: back in January, the group claimed responsibility for a car bomb in January aimed at leaders of Hezbollah, a Shiite militia.
Rogers also noted the possibility of al Qaeda sympathizers in Jordan coming into contact with ISIS as it spreads throughout Iraq.
The al-Arabiya news channel has reported that the group hopes to create a state combining territory in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon and Israel.
"There is no question that ISIS presents a regional threat and is forming the platform for a new global terrorist movement. The antecedents to ISIS envisioned a broader regional and global agenda -- and launched attacks into Jordan and attempted to influence in Lebanon," said former Bush counterterrorism adviser Juan Zarate, now a CBS News national security analyst.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies'(CSIS) Tom Sanderson, who co-directs the organization's Transnational Threats Project, said that ISIS' growth in Syria, where it was able to recruit foreign fighters from 70 to 80 different countries, makes it uniquely capable of reaching beyond its current base of power along the border with Iraq.
"ISIS has networked with people from dozens, scores of countries," Sanderson told CBS News. "It gives them the potential to travel to and operate in these countries where they have people they know, they trust, who have the skills to operate."
Among the countries that might be susceptible to ISIS influence are Indonesia, Germany, Canada, Yemen, Algeria and Morocco, among others.
"As far as North Africa is concerned I think they would find a lot of welcoming and open hearts and hands because they're fielding tons and tons of fighters from Morocco and Tunisia in particular as well as Libya," Sanderson said.
At a CSIS panel last week, former CIA Deputy Director Stephen Kappes said the group's ability to bring in disenfranchised men from countries like Pakistan and Morocco should not be underestimated. "It's a far more successful thing than people realize here in the United States," he said.
