"With Climate Change, Wildfires Getting Worse in the West"

Across the western United States, wildfires grew bigger and more frequent in the past 30 years, according to a new study that blames climate change and drought for the worsening flames.

"It's not just something that is localized to forest or grasslands or deserts," said lead study author Phil Dennison, a geographer at the University of Utah. "Every region in the West is experiencing an increase in fire. These fire trends are very consistent with everything we know about how climate change should impact fire in the West," Dennison told Live Science.

The number of fires jumped by seven per year since 1984, and fires burned an additional 90,000 acres (36,000 hectares) each year, according to the study, published online April 4 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.[Yosemite Aflame: The Rim Fire in Photos]

Experts warn civilian world not ready for massive EMP-caused blackout

The catastrophic effects of an electromagnetic pulse-caused blackout could be preventable, but experts warn the civilian world is still not ready.

Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, said the technology to avoid disaster from electromagnetic pulses exists, and upgrading the nation's electrical grid is financially viable.

"The problem is not the technology," Pry said. "We know how to protect against it. It's not the money, it doesn't cost that much. The problem is the politics. It always seems to be the politics that gets in the way."

He said the more officials plan, the lower the estimated cost gets.

"If you do a smart plan - the Congressional EMP Commission estimated that you could protect the whole country for about $2 billion," Pry told Watchdog.org . "That's what we give away in foreign aid to Pakistan every year."

In the first few minutes of an EMP, nearly half a million people would die. That's the worst-case scenario that author William R. Forstchen estimated in 2011 would be the result of an EMP on the electric grid - whether by an act of God, or a nuclear missile detonating in Earth's upper atmosphere.

An electromagnetic pulse is a burst of electromagnetic energy strong enough to disable, and even destroy, nearby electronic devices.

National wildland fire strategy unveiled
West needs to reduce built-up fuels in forests, report says
By Andrew Clevenger / The Bulletin [email protected]
Published Apr 11, 2014 at 12:01AM
WASHINGTON — Communities and government agencies need to work together to make the landscape more resilient to wildfires, according to a new national strategy for coping with wildfires.
The strategy calls for a mixture of fuels reduction, better preparing communities and structures for fires, and coordinated responses to the fires that do break out. The strategy is supposed to provide a unified vision for efforts to reduce the effects of huge fires in high risk areas.
“The gradual accumulation of wildland fuels is perhaps the most difficult and challenging issue to address,” states the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy. It compares dealing with growing fuel loads on forests and grasslands to walking up a down escalator: One has to keep moving forward to stay in the same place, and even faster to make progress.
“Despite current investments in priority areas being treated through fuels management or burned in wildfires, some landscapes are accumulating fuels at a rate faster than can be managed,” the strategy states.
Announced jointly by U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, the strategy was developed under the Federal Land Assistance, Management, and Enhancement Act of 2009, better known as the FLAME Act. That legislation required the two cabinet departments, working in conjunction with other stakeholders, to develop a cohesive wildfire management strategy for the 21st century.
The strategy breaks the country into three regions: northeast, southeast and western, which runs from the Dakotas, Kansas and Nebraska to the West Coast, including New Mexico and Arizona, but not Texas and Oklahoma. A century of putting out fires instead of letting them burn and reduced active forest management have led to a buildup of dangerous fuels, the strategy notes.
“The forest and rangeland health problems in the West are widespread and increasing, affecting wildlife habitat, water quality and quantity and long-term soil productivity, while providing conditions for uncharacteristically large, severe, and costly wildfires, with increasing threats to human life and property,” the strategy states.

You and 'flack' are wrong again. The dirty stain of Texas Senator Phil Gramm and his wife 's 'fingerprints' are all over the banking and mortgage financial meltdown. " Who's to blame for the biggest financial catastrophe of our time? There are plenty of culprits, but one candidate for lead perp is former Sen. Phil Gramm. Eight years ago, as part of a decades-long anti-regulatory crusade, Gramm pulled a sly legislative maneuver that greased the way to the multibillion-dollar subprime meltdown. Yet has Gramm been banished from the corridors of power? Reviled as the villain who bankrupted Middle America? Hardly. Now a well-paid executive at a Swiss bank, Gramm cochairs Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign and advises the Republican candidate on economic matters. He's been mentioned as a possible Treasury secretary should McCain win. That's right: A guy who helped screw up the global financial system could end up in charge of US economic policy. Talk about a market failure." Bundy doesn't have a legal leg to stand on. It's the law itself that is questioned.
