HEY STUPID! The oil from the Keystone XL pipeline is coming from one foreign country and will be exported so just how does that in any way help our energy security? The jobs picture isn't as rosy as the pipeline proponents make it look.
A 2011 study conducted by Cornell University’s ILR Global Labor Institute, which works with trade unions on environmental and other challenges, concluded that the Keystone XL pipeline could actually destroy more jobs than it created. The study takes into account job loss that would be caused if Midwesterners end up paying 10 to 20 cents more per gallon of gas due to the pipeline diverting oil from Midwest refineries to the Gulf region.
The only thing shallow here is your knowledge of the subject.

A magistrate ruled last week that a Florida woman must hook up to city utilities or face possible eviction from her home.

Robin Speronis, of Cape Coral, has drawn national attention for living without running water or electricity, which Special Magistrate Harold S. Eskin ruled Thursday violated city codes.

The magistrate ruled that Speronis must pay for water service and ordered her sewer capped until she did so, reported The News-Press.

“This resident provided testimony at the code compliance hearing that she has been living in the home for the past year and using the city’s wastewater system without paying for the service,” said Connie Barron, a spokeswoman for the city.

But the magistrate also ruled that the city had overstepped its authority and may have violated due process procedures by failing to give Speronis proper notice of the alleged violations.

Several liens have been placed on her home because Speronis had been using the drains but hadn’t paid her water bills.

Speronis said she had no intention of connecting to city utilities and vowed to appeal the magistrate’s decision.

Her attorney said the city’s code contained an inherent conflict because Speronis must hook up to the water system, even though officials admit she doesn’t have to use it.

Barron said the sewer should have been capped much sooner but city officials decided to wait until the code hearing had been completed.

Speronis said she intends to dispose of her waste as dog owners do for their pets, and she plans to collect wastewater in containers and use it for her garden.

“I know how to live off the grid completely and in a sanitary way,” Speronis said in an email.“That’s what seven months in living in the woods taught me. I do have an alternative toilet from my days of living in the woods.”

Speronis collects rainwater for washing and other purposes and generates electricity with solar panels.

City officials had ignored her actions until she discussed her living situation with a local TV reporter.

“What happens in the courtroom is much less important than touching people’s hearts and minds,” Speronis said.“I think that we are continuing to be successful in doing just that and I am so pleased. There is hope.”

GOP on Arizona gay law: Make it go away

Others say the controversy comes at a bad time for the party. Mark McKinnon, ad maker for George W. Bush’s 2000 and 2004 campaigns, said “the GOP rebranding effort is [the] classic one step forward, two steps back.”

“In this country, the arc of human rights always bends forward, never backwards,” said McKinnon, a co-founder of the centrist group No Labels.“So these kinds of incidents are always backward steps for the Republican Party because they remind voters they are stuck in the past.”

Supreme Court Makes Big Decision On When Cops Can Enter Your Home

WASHINGTON (AP)— The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that police may search a home without a warrant when two occupants disagree about allowing officers to enter, and the resident who refuses access is then arrested.

The justices declined to extend an earlier ruling denying entry to police when the occupants disagree and both are present.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote the court's 6-3 decision holding that an occupant may not object to a search when he is not at home.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in dissent that "Fernandez's objection to the search did not become null upon his arrest and removal from the scene."
Ginsburg, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, also took issue with the notion that ruling for Fernandez would harm women who are victims of domestic violence.

Ginsburg said that police are justified in the immediate removal of the abuser from the premises. That, she said, is what happened in this case. But that shouldn't trump the need for a warrant to overcome Fernandez's objection to the search of his home

A Republican-led bill designed to "save American workers" would cause 1 million workers to lose their health care coverage and increase the deficit by $74 billion, according to Congress' official scorekeeper.

The legislation, offered by Rep. Todd Young (R-IN) and 208 co-sponsors as a tweak to Obamacare, would change the definition of a full-time work week under the health care law from 30 hours per week to 40 hours. The aim was to mitigate the effect of the law's employer mandate, which says businesses with 50 or more workers must offer insurance to full-time employees.

An analysis of the bill, released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation, found that it would cause 1 million people to lose their employer-based insurance coverage. The report projected that more than 500,000 of them would end up getting coverage through Medicaid, the Children's Health Care Program or the Obamacare exchanges. The rest, CBO and JCT said, would become uninsured.

The legislation would also lower the amount the federal government collects in penalties from businesses who don't abide by the employer mandate. As a result, the report found, the deficit would go up by $74 billion over 10 years.

Titled the "Save American Workers Act," the bill cleared the House Ways & Means Committee on a party line vote earlier this month and was slated for a full House vote perhaps as early as next week. Of the bill's 208 cosponsors, seven are Democrats.

The CBO findings are problematic for Republicans in part because they've raised hell about insurance cancellations and market disruptions due to Obamacare's minimum coverage standards and other provisions.

A spokesman for Young didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Testifying against bills that would legalize or decriminalize marijuana, the police chief for Annapolis, Md., cited a fake news story that reported 37 people died on the first day Colorado’s recreational marijuana law went into effect.

“The first day of legalization, that’s when Colorado experienced 37 deaths that day from overdose on marijuana,” Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop said Tuesday at a committee hearing, according to the Capital Gazette.“I remember the first day it was decriminalized there were 37 deaths.”

Maryland Sen. Jamie Raskin (D) immediately corrected Pristoop and pointed out that he seemed to be citing a fake story by the satirical news site, The Daily Currant, the Gazette reported.

“Unless you have some other source for this, I’m afraid I’ve got to spoil the party here,” Raskin said.
