WASHINGTON -- In a time where not much seems to be going as planned in the Affordable Care Act's rollout, it's no surprise that Medicaid enrollment is going as expected and sign-ups outnumber those for private coverage by nearly 4-to-1, experts said Friday.
For one thing, states that have expanded their Medicaid programs are also the same ones doing aggressive outreach, as they generally support the act and its coverage expansions, said Matt Salo, executive director of the National Association of Medicaid Directors.
Furthermore, states have had an easier time enrolling those eligible for Medicaid than they have enrolling people in private health coverage, even when the latter is subsidized, Salo said here at an Alliance for Health Reform briefing on initial results for enrollment in the ACA's exchanges, or marketplaces.
"You know who these people are. You know where they live. You know what their income is. You know they're OK getting government benefits," Salo said. "When you reach out to them and say,'Hey, we've got something we think you might be interested in -- Medicaid,' it's not a surprise they come back in pretty large numbers and say 'Yes, we are interested.' Project Veritas Carol? That’s a really ironic name for a group founded by proven liar James O'Keefe.
The segment was even too much for Fox faux-liberal Juan Williams, who pointed out to O'Reilly that just catching a couple of trainees on video doesn't mean this is going on all across the system. O'Reilly just brushed off the complaints and went on to attack Williams for his belief that everyone should have access to affordable health care... even if they're lazy, having children of wedlock or not terribly smart. I can't imagine just who Billy boy was trying to stereotype there, can you?
O'Keefe has been caught using lies and creative video editing several times like his attempt to discredit the Lifeline program. O’Keefe’s video purports to show O’Keefe’s actors receiving free cell phones after telling employees of a wireless phone company that they plan to sell the phones to pay for drugs, other purchases, or bills. The edited video includes a narration by O’Keefe asking if the employees would tell his actors “to sell the phones and break the law.”
The raw footage that O’Keefe also released doesn’t show any of the featured employees telling the actors to sell their free phones, despite the actors repeatedly saying that they intend to do so and asking about their resale value. As New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait explained, the employees only acknowledged that personal property, in the form of these cell phones, can be sold by their owners to buy other things. The raw footage also shows that none of the actors actually received a free phone—only information about how they could apply for a free phone and the eligibility requirements to receive one, with the actors walking away saying they’d bring their documentation later.
, O’Keefe has wracked up quite a record of ill-repute, including a $100,000 payment to a former ACORN worker smeared in one of O’Keefe’s “sting” videos, an arrest record and a planned sexual “prank” against a female CNN reporter.

More Americans say Obama can't manage government: poll

Reuters)- A growing number of Americans doubt President Barack Obama's ability to manage the nation, according to a CNN/ORC poll released on Monday that reflects the possible larger impact of his administration's fumbled rollout of its healthcare law.

The poll also found that 53 percent of those polled said Obama is not honest or trustworthy, marking the first time that the CNN/ORC polling found a clear majority questioning the president's integrity, CNN said.

Forty percent of the 843 U.S. adults surveyed in the telephone poll early last week said Obama can manage the government effectively, down 12 percentage points from June.

Good Luck With That

Sen. Cruz (R-TX) says that killing the filibuster (and that's really what it is) "will poison the atmosphere of the Senate."

All the snark aside (and this deserves plenty of snark), I think this does point to the bad position Senate Republicans put themselves in - namely, that it is just not really credible that any more poisoning is possible in the Senate. And no person captures that more clearly than Sen. Cruz.

Public Opinion and a Deal With Iran (II)

Two recent polls have found majority support in the U.S. for an interim nuclear deal with Iran. This was from the CNN poll’s findings:

A CNN/ORC International survey released Thursday indicates that 56% of the public would favor an international agreement that would impose major restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program but not end it completely, with 39% opposed to such an agreement.

“Predictably, there is a partisan divide on that issue, with two-thirds of Democrats favoring a deal along those lines but only 45% of Republicans agreeing with that view,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.

The earlier Post/ABC News poll finds even broader support across party lines, but even here almost half of Republican respondents endorse an interim deal. It doesn’t surprise me that there is this much support for an agreement. Earlier this month, I thought that most Americans would be more inclined to support a deal than to prefer the alternatives offered by hard-liners. We all understand that most members of Congress don’t take their cues on foreign policy from public opinion, but it is a bit remarkable that this majority view has so few vocal representatives in Congress. Among Republicans in Congress, there is unfortunately almost total uniformity on one side of an issue despite the fact that there is a significant Republican constituency in favor of a deal. Hawkish members of Congress from both parties are out of step with public opinion on Iran, but so far there are few signs that any of them are adjusting to this reality.

A 31-Year-Old Is Tearing Apart the Heritage Foundation Think Republicans have been making fools of themselves? Blame Michael Needham.

Needham is the 31-year-old CEO of Heritage Action, the relatively new activist branch of the Heritage Foundation, the storied Washington think tank that was one of the leaders of the conservative war of ideas ever since it provided the blueprint for Ronald Reagan’s first term. Although DeMint is Heritage’s president, it was Needham who had designed much of the defund Obamacare strategy. Beginning in 2010, when Heritage Action was founded, Needham pushed the GOP to use Congress’s power of the purse to eviscerate the Affordable Care Act. He formed a grassroots army, which he used to keep congressional Republicans in line.“They make six hundred phone calls and have a member of Congress in the fetal position,” says one GOP congressional staffer.

After months of furious lobbying, Needham sold, at most, 20 members of the House on his plan of attack. In the end, this was enough to cement the party line—and lead the GOP to a spectacular, deafening loss.

Sorting through the wreckage, Washington conservatives can barely contain their anger at Needham for his ideological inflexibility and aggressive, zero-sum tactics.“Their strategic sense isn’t very strong,” griped a prominent Republican lobbyist.“They’ve repeatedly been wrong about how to handle this.” Says a senior House Republican aide,“Mike Needham played a large role in defeating ideas that would have worked out better.”

But the wrath is not solely reserved for Needham; his employer now inspires plenty of disgust among conservatives, too. Increasingly in Washington,“Heritage” has come to denote not the foundation or the think tank, but Heritage Action, Needham’s sharp-elbowed operation. Instead of fleshing out conservative positions, says one Republican Senate staffer,“now they’re running around trying to get Republicans voted out of office. It’s a purely ideological crusade that’s utterly divorced from the research side.”(“If Nancy Pelosi could write an anonymous check to Heritage Action,” adds the House aide bitterly,“she would.”)

As a result, the Heritage Foundation has gone from august conservative think tank revered by Washington’s Republicans to the party’s loathed ideological commissar.

Iran nuclear deal: Saudi Arabia warns it will strike out on its own

"
Nawaf Obaid told a think tank meeting in London that Saudi Arabia was determined to pursue its own foreign and policy goals. Having in the past been reactive to events, the leading Sunni Muslim nation was determined to be pro-active in future.

Mr Obaid said that while Saudi Arabia knew that the US was talking directly to Iran through a channel in the Gulf state of Oman, Washington had not directly briefed its ally.

"We were lied to, things were hidden from us," he said. "The problem is not with the deal struck in Geneva but how it was done."
