This isn’t the first time a dictator is getting a second chance, and even coming off looking better after committing heinous crimes. Saddam Hussein was never punished for the gassing in Halabja that left 5,000 people dead; the U.S. didn’t intervene until he invaded oil-rich Kuwait two years later. Assad’s father, Hafez, remained in power for nearly two decades after Hama. He grew to become a fixture of stability in the Middle East who kept his border with Israel quiet and peaceful.
President Obama used to say it was a matter of "when," not "if" Assad’s regime would fall. Its inevitable collapse now, however, seems far less certain, even after the most watched war crime in history.

Cuba shutters private theaters, threatens other businesses
By Reuters
Cuba closed dozens of home-based movie theaters on Saturday and reaffirmed its plans to end the private sale of imported goods as communist authorities pressed for "order, discipline and obedience" in the growing small business sector.
A government statement issued through official media said home-based theaters and video games will "stop immediately in any type of self employment," a local euphemism for small business.
The statement said "the showing of movies, including in 3D salons, and likewise the organization of computer games, has never been authorized."
The government banned the private sale of imported goods last month, a measure that potentially affects some 20,000 small businesses and their employees who sell clothing, hardware and other goods brought in informally by travelers, some of whom visit the Caribbean island regularly carrying merchandise from the United States, Spain and Latin American countries.
President Raul Castro, who replaced his brother Fidel in 2008, has instituted a series of market-oriented reforms to Cuba's Soviet style economy where the state still employs 79 percent of the 5 million-strong labor force.
"These measures are corrections to continue bringing order to this form of management, fight impunity and insist people live up to the law," the government said on Saturday.
"In no way does this mean a step backward. Quite the contrary, we will continue to decidedly advance in the updating of our economic model," it said, adding that would only be possible "in an atmosphere of order, discipline and obedience."
The import ban has created a fury among entrepreneurs and the public who have tired of buying high priced and low quality clothing from state-run establishments.
Saturday's closing of private theaters will add fuel to the fire as they have been overwhelmingly welcomed by the public.
Marlene said her neighbor was planning to open a 3D salon.
"The state has no 3D theaters, so what is their problem. Sometimes the government seems to want to make our lives worse for the fun of it," she said, asking her last name not be used.
State role questioned
Cuban economist Juan Triana, in his regular Thursday commentary on state-run Radio Taino, said that the government should get out of businesses it had no reason to be in, referring to the ban on imports.
"Is it really worthwhile for the state to continue expending effort, money and prestige in an activity it was not designed for ... and which in general undermines its prestige due to the quality of the products, but also theft, corruption, many costs that are difficult to cover even though prices are very often two or three times their value," he said.
On Saturday the government said it had decided to postpone the ban on imports until January to give vendors time to liquidate their inventories.
Three years ago the government opened up retail services to "self employment" in the form of 200 licensed activities from clowns, seamstresses, food vendors, taxis and the building trades, to small businesses such as restaurants, cafeterias, bed and breakfasts and entertainment.
The government said the measure was aimed at absorbing excess state labor, improving services, eliminating inefficiencies and bringing black-market activity above ground.
There are now 442,000 self-employed people in Cuba, of whom around 100,000 work as employees of small businesses, according to the government.
Enterprising residents have taken advantage of some of the categories - for example entertainer or seamstress - to offer movies, video games and imported clothing and supplies in greater variety and at lower cost than the state.
In September the government added 12 new licenses, including real estate broker, but also listed all self-employed categories and the content of approved activity. It added phrases such as for seamstress, "does not include the sale of manufactured or imported clothing."

When the tea party jumped the shark

If Ken Cuccinelli II loses his bid to be the next governor of Virginia on Tuesday, as polls suggest he will, the date of the Republican defeat will be traced back to May 18.

That was the day the commonwealth’s Republican Party took what had been a sure thing and instead allowed the tea party to give the Democrats an opening.

Supporters of Cuccinelli, the state attorney general, had scrapped the GOP gubernatorial primary, which probably would have resulted in the nomination of Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a mainstream conservative who likely would have cruised to victory.

But Cuccinelli’s supporters forced the party to cut the electorate out of the process, replacing the primary with a convention. There, a smaller number of tea party activists handed the nomination to Cuccinelli, a man so conservative he had supported legislation that would have allowed the banning of the pill and other forms of birth control.

Unfortunately for Republicans, the convention chose not just Cuccinelli but also, as the lieutenant governor nominee, E.W. Jackson, a man who has said that gays are “very sick people” whose “minds are perverted”; who has argued that Planned Parenthood has been worse for blacks than the Ku Klux Klan; and who has also said that non-Christians practice “some sort of false religion.”

Suddenly, Democrats were in contention.

You're full of crap as usual Carol. If the ACA was doomed to fail then the Republicans would simply let it and reap political capital for at least a decade. It's already helping people like someone on long term chemotherapy who doesn't have to worry about their treatment being cut off because of some arbitrary lifetime cap. Childhood cancer survivors can't be denied coverage as adults. Families with young adults in college or just starting out in life don't have to shell out for another policy. Seniors are getting a break on their medications under Medicare part D. People are getting rebate checks if their insurance provider hasn't used 80% of their premiums on providing medical expenses.
The question is why do you shill for people who couldn't be bothered to piss on you if you were on fire?
You are the one who is full of crap. The only thing your ACA has done is substitute who has health care. Now the people who had health care are being dropped and can't afford it, not get a subsidy.

It's called income redistribution, commie boy.

Hatewatch Exclusive: Alleged LAX Shooter Referenced ‘Patriot’ Conspiracy Theories

The 23-year-old man who allegedly killed a TSA official at Los Angeles International Airport yesterday was carrying a one-page “manifesto” that included references to the “New World Order,” the Federal Reserve and “fiat currency,” according to a knowledgeable source with ranking law enforcement contacts.

Paul Anthony Ciancia, who allegedly wounded three other TSA workers before being shot and critically wounded himself, also expressed antagonism toward the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its chief until she resigned in August, Janet Napolitano, the source said. Ciancia’s note called former Secretary Napolitano a “bull dyke” and contained the phrase “FU Janet Napolitano,” the source said.

Ciancia’s language and references seemed to put him squarely in the conspiracy-minded world of the antigovernment “Patriot” movement. The New World Order refers to a longstanding conspiracy theory that today, in its most popular iteration, claims that global elites are plotting to form a socialistic “one-world government” that would crush American freedoms. Often, the root of the alleged conspiracy is traced to the 1913 creation of the Federal Reserve and the adoption of fiat currency — paper money that is not backed by gold, as it was once was in the U.S.

So-called Patriots also increasingly see the DHS, which produces intelligence assessments of extremists that are distributed to other law enforcement agencies, as an enemy and even a collaborator in the New World Order conspiracy. Many believe DHS has targeted their movement and is somehow connected to the alleged construction of concentration camps by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The purported camps are thought to be meant for those Americans who resist a coming national seizure of all weapons from U.S. citizens.

It already HAS failed, frenchyphag!! In less than two months MILLIONS of policy cancellation notices will roll out, and that's when public sentiment will overwhelmingly turn against odumbocare. Baruck will have popularity ratings in the mid-30 percentile range (only the nuttiest leftist phags will still support him), and the backlash will be felt in the midterms as Constitutional Conservatives sweep to yet ANOTHER record victory).

That DOES give you something to look forward to though, huh?:-)

Typical right wing nut reply. Answers a question that does not exist in the comment he is replying to. Off on another adventures of illusions with eyes closed. Leaving the rest of us to increasing substance and facts to the threads that these Tea addicts can not fathom. Illuminating their dysfunctional ideology which is not worthy of any form of authority. Back to the herd with them as the Fox keeps nipping at their hoofs.
Now lets observe how austerity can be viewed for the failure that it is. Observe the pyramid structure that it produces.
Austerity harsh profits and its potential failure illuminated.
We now can observe the demise of austerity in Europe. Chancellor Angela Merkel is preaching austerity to their neighbors all the while loosening the purse strings in Germany, to address, a first in its history, minimum wage of $11.50, equal pensions for both the East And West, equal pay for women, tax increases on the affluent, infrastructure funding, education, energy and higher child care.
Ms. Merkel has taken advantage of the undervalued euro, increasing their “EXPORTS” at the cost to their neighbors loses. Greece, Italy, Spain, France and Portugal have carried the cost burden of the austerity of Germany. Alas now a growing rebellion against austerity amongst the VOTERS of these nations is exposing how Germany prospered at their lost.
They bore huge unemployment to their youth and lost of tax revenue. Lost of EXPORTS stifling their ports of profits. Germany on the other hand prospered. Record employment paid for their welfare systems. Debt has soared since 2000 at about 80% of their GDP which is far less than what the USA, France and the UK experienced.
Now Ms. Merkel is facing more than $100 Billion euro’s or $135 Billion over the next 15 years to repair its stock of roads, bridges and railroads. This with a workforce at present of 42 million paying taxes. Their national average of births has declined to 1.4 children. Insufficient for replacement rate of 2.1. Child Care systems will require additional financial attention.
Now their neighbors scorn how Germany has taken advantage of them. The EU is coming under attack for reform.
Political scientist Roberto d’Alimonte of Luiss Guido Carli University has no doubts that Germany will have to pay restitution for the damage it has bestowed upon its neighbors. Not to do so would erode Germany’s standing.
“What place in history can Germany have without Europe? A community of values has to include also some kind of solidarity. Because without that, it will not
survive.”

You are drenched to the bone as the waters around you are rising. Shivering in the gusting winds of change that are rattling your walls. They are beyond your comprehension and soon you will sink like a stone. For the times they are a changing.
What a difference with an intelligent leadership. President Obama open a small preview of things to come.
“I can tell you right now that in many states across the country, if you’re, say, a 27-year-old young woman, don’t have health insurance, you get on that exchange, you’re going to be able to purchase high-quality health insurance for less than the cost of your cellphone bill,” Mr. Obama said Tuesday.
For a benchmark plan — the second-lowest-cost “silver plan,” covering 70 percent of projected medical costs for a typical consumer — the average premium nationally will be $328 a month for individuals.
Yes, yes I know what about the 30% remaining. Keep in mind Medicare that many already enjoy. They could use it as a supplement as I use Medicare as a supplement to my VFW medical benefits.
This is for those approaching Medicare and cannot afford health insurance at all. Once you reach fifty and you lose a job good luck getting another one. Out to pasture to graze on your laurels will more likely be the case. Minim income if any and NO health insurance. That’s where the Previous republican behemoth monopolized Health Insurance Companies started to hit these individuals with huge increases in premiums and less coverage, with higher co pays. Its going to take a few years to fix that corruptive hole that republicans created with their dysfunctional Health Care Insurance plans.
For a family of “FOUR” with an annual income of $50,000, the administration said, monthly premiums for the second-cheapest plan will vary widely, averaging $600 in Arizona,$800 in Georgia,$961 in Indiana,$1,069 in Mississippi,$859 in New Hampshire,$943 in New Jersey and $656 in Utah.
OF course this is our first steps unto the road of someday Universal Care as the rest of our civilized world already enjoys at far less cost than our start up cost. There will be higher cost for those states that obstructs and or require the Federal to actively set up the program for them. Catering service charges, that the taxpayers of those states will be paying, for voting in a dysfunctional leadership. 2014 coming. Rectify that problem or additional obstructions will cost more to be removed, charged to the taxpayers insurance plan.
