What would happen if Congress, or one half of it, voted against authorizing a punitive U.S. strike against Syria?
A view shared by the Obama administration and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., alike is that it would prove disastrous to U.S. standing and trust. After meeting with Obama Monday, McCain said outside the White House:
"If the Congress were to reject a resolution like this, after the president of the United States has already committed to action, the consequences would be catastrophic in that the credibility of this country with friends and adversaries alike would be shredded. And it would be not only implications for this presidency, but for future presidencies as well."
Of course, there's always the possibility that the House could vote against a U.S. military strike and Obama could go forward with it anyway, especially if he gets a strong Senate vote in favor of punitive attacks. Some lawmakers, like Rep. Peter King, D-N.Y., and McCain have argued that Obama would have the constitutional authority to order strikes without Congress' authorization. Obama has said so himself as well.
But if Congress votes no, Obama "can then say:'Well, leadership is not about solely imposing your will. It's also about following the will of the people and this is a democratic electoral process and that's what I'm doing now,' " says Wayne.
"It does seem to me the public might be relieved if Congress said no," Wayne continued. "I think [seeking congressional approval] was an astute political move by a guy who placed himself in a no-win position."

COME ALONG LILY FROM BOCA Ticket To War: No Moron Left Behind
You’re just a click away on your remote. Get the popcorn. It’s a blast. This one has MORAL STATURE! They used chemical weapons, so they will pay.

If your brother-in-law is over at the house as you watch the missile strike and he says,“You know, there’s no good proof Assad used poison gas,” poke him in the eye with a sizzling hot dog on a stick and yell,“USA! USA! USA!”
so they will pay.

Don’t miss Chris Matthews. He’s tingling all over.“The president did the right thing and he upheld the Constitution. Only a living god could figure out how to pull that off.”

Welcome to the Syrian theater. All the players are assembled. Which one will intervene and turn a two-day blitz into a global conflagration?

We realize you don’t have whatever it takes to actually enlist in the Armed Forces and do six insane tours in Afghanistan building A-frames and wondering when one of those villagers will shoot you in the head. No problem. You can experience a very good simulacrum in your own mind. The anticipation. The adrenaline flow. The sweaty palms. Then the limbic thrust of revenge.

And as a bonus? No court martial when it turns out you killed an Afghan who was just reaching in his coat pocket for a screwdriver to attach his new front door!

The Syrian run-up is almost as good as the first missile launch. Click to Wolf Blitzer as he recalls his coverage of Gulf War One, when he made his bones purely on the basis of his name.

Catch the living cadaver, Scott Pelley, as he flashes back on his work at the Davidian siege at Waco.

Count down to the first explosion with the eternal newsboy riding his bike and flipping papers on front porches, Brian Williams.

Feel the undertone of sodden grief with Dianne Sawyer (weeps for everybody/all the time) as she does war as only a former America’s Junior Miss can.

And then, boom! You’re there. The attack is on! The sky over Damascus lights up! What unknown newsman, standing on a rooftop, narrating the unfolding scene, will emerge from the carnage with name recognition and a sudden career bump that makes his colleagues want to murder him in his sleep.

It’s the news! Tune in!

America is united again. Feel it. What took us so long to find each other once more? Post your experience on Facebook. Share your ecstasy with faux friends. Recite the Pledge of Allegiance against a hip-hop track and hope it goes viral.

Finally, all the goody-two-shoes questions about who used chemical weapons and which side we’re backing in Syria and who is al Qaeda and the CIA sending weapons and killers from Libya to Syria are gone. Erased. This is the show! This is what counts! Pretext? Invented provocation? False flag? Don’t bother me, I’m eating war!

If only we still had the Rat Pack around. Frank, Dean, Sammy, Lawford, and Joey Bishop. They could do a Sarin Night at the Desert Inn and wow the crowd with their support for the guys who launch the Tomahawks.

President Obama’s liberal activist base is adamantly opposed to military strikes in Syria, according to a new survey the Progressive Change Campaign Committee released Wednesday.

PCCC says more than 57,000 of its activists weighed in, and 73 percent of them opposed the U.S. taking action in Syria. Just 18 percent supported strikes, and just 14 percent said the U.S. should go ahead unilaterally if it can’t find any allies.

Indeed, a majority of the activists don’t believe Mr. Obama and Secretary of State John F. Kerry are being honest when they lay out their justifications for taking military action.

Four out of five activists also said they believe U.S. action will lead to deeper involvement in the civil war.

PCCC detailed the findings, which came from a three-day survey of its activists, in a memo to congressional Democrats.

“In the last 72 hours, we surveyed PCCC members across the nation – in every state and congressional district. We’ve received over 57,000 responses so far, and a clear result: Your progressive base stands firmly against bombing Syria,” said Adam Green and Stephanie Taylor, co-founders of PCCC.

TO THE LOUSE FROM BOCA lily Wartime Propaganda and America’s First Amendment,Good minds must not be closed on any topic, including narratives of Germany’s wartime internment camps. I do not pretend to know the answers. What I do know is that we, in this country, are blessed to have a First Amendment right to ask questions as well as to hear them, and to both hear and suggest answers. Anything less must considered unacceptable, including categorizing any topic as too sacrosanct to be discussed openly.

Auschwitz had a cinema, pool, brothel, post office, dental facilities, library, huge kitchen, university, sauna, camp money, hospital, maternity ward (3000 recorded live births without a single infant mortality while the camp was under German rule), orchestras, theater, soccer fields, etc. The Red Cross visited often and kept detailed records, some of which have been posted online. Why would the German National Socialist government have provided all of that?

Why fight disease by widespread anti-lice measures such as hair removal and cyanide gassing of clothing? Why are persons who ask these and other questions prosecuted at law? Responding to those who ask such questions by calling them names that are poorly defined is a ploy best used by propagandists and fascists. Why does violence so frequently take the place of rebuttal?

Must we believe every piece of propaganda fed to us on TV and in other controlled media? Raul Hilberg, the so-called establishment “expert” historian, testified on the record in the trial of Ernst Zundel that there is not a single autopsy report proving that even one person died of gas poisoning in the camps. Dying in a typhus epidemic does not equal deliberate murder

On Tuesday, Sen. Ted Cruz distilled the current debate over possible military action in Syria to its essential dilemma. While Syrian President Bashar Assad is certainly a ruthless dictator, the forces aligned against him are dominated by jihadis and elements of terrorist organizations. Cruz noted that Americans didn't enlist in the military to "serve as Al-Qaeda's Air Force."

“We certainly don’t have a dog in the fight,” Cruz said, calling it a civil war in Syria.“We should be focused on defending the United States of America. That’s why young men and women sign up to join the military, not to, as you know, serve as Al Qaeda’s air force.”

Cruz noted that of the nine major rebel groups, seven have ties to Al-Qaeda. Cruz's colleagues, Sens. McCain and Graham are pushing the Obama Administration to arm rebel forces with heavy weapons. It is unclear how the US would ensure that its weapons would go exclusively to the "right" rebel forces. Even if they were, it is likely that any post-Assad regime would be dominated by elements loyal to Al-Qaeda.

“I’ll give you one of the simplest principles of foreign policy that we ought to be following," Cruz said. "Don’t give weapons to people who hate you. Don’t give weapons to people who want to kill you."

David Cameron has publicly ruled out the prospect of British military action in Syria following days of speculation that MPs could be allowed to reconsider the case for intervention because of events in America.

The Prime Minister said that the UK “can’t be part and won’t be part” of any military strikes against Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Mr Cameron has come under pressure from senior Conservative to hold a second vote in the Commons on the issue after Barack Obama, the US President, delayed his response in Syria.

A number of ministers including Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, this week appeared to leave the door open to a second vote if the circumstances in Syria “change very significantly”.

Downing Street had for days only said that there were "absolutely no plans" to return to the Commons for another vote on Syria.

However, speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Cameron excluded the possibility of Britain having any role in military action.
