In 1960 Republican Sen. Everett Dirksen authored a voting rights bill to counter attacks by the KKK. The bill was passed in the face of Democrat attempts to block its passage.

"Reluctantly"? Here's LBJ's speech to Congress urging them to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1965( less than a year after earlier versions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 were 'watered down' enough to get passed) LBJ doesn't sound 'reluctant' at all! "I will send to Congress a law designed to eliminate illegal barriers to the right to vote….

To those who seek to avoid action by their National Government in their home communities—who want to and who seek to maintain purely local control over elections—the answer is simple. Open your polling places to all your people. Allow men and women to register and vote whatever the color of their skin. Extend the rights of citizenship to every citizen of this land. There is no constitutional issue here. The command of the Constitution is plain. There is no moral issue. It is wrong—deadly wrong—to deny any of your fellow Americans the right to vote in this country. There is no issue of States rights or National rights. There is only the struggle for human rights."

The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee said the weekend closures of nearly two dozen U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world was "the most serious threat" he'd seen in recent years.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said Sunday "the chatter" intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies led the Obama administration to order the weekend closure of 21 diplomatic facilities and to issue a global travel warning to Americans. He told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the intelligence was "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."

"The one thing that we can talk about is the fact that there's been an awful lot of chatter out there," Chambliss said. "We didn't take heed on 9/11 in a way that we should, but here I think it's very important that we do take the right kind of planning."

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that the threat intercepted from "high-level people in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula" was about a "major attack."

The Maryland Democrat didn't provide details of the threat, other than to say it came from "people at a high level."

Rep. Pete King, a New York Republican who chairs a House panel on counterterrorism and intelligence, also spoke to ABC and said that the threat included dates but not locations of possible attacks

Did Carol answer the question?

Who is the leader of the Republican Party?

Some one must admit to being in charge, usually it is the last elected president.

George W. Bush may be the leader?

Another thug removed from the gene pool. Good times!!

New York police officer shoots, kills armed 14-year-old

By: Associated Press

NEW YORK - A rookie police officer shot and killed a 14-year-old boy on a street early Sunday after he refused to drop his gun and pointed it at them, authorities said.

Shaaliver Douse died of a single gunshot to his jaw after the confrontation in the Melrose section of the Bronx.

Two officers with the New York Police Department were on foot patrol when they heard gunfire at around 3 a.m. The officers responded to the scene and found the boy with a 9mm handgun firing shots at a fleeing man, authorities said.

The officers identified themselves as police and ordered him to drop his weapon, authorities said.

When he pointed his gun at them, one of the officers shot him, police said. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two officers had joined the department in January.

Douse had been in trouble with the law before.

He was charged in May with attempted murder after a 15-year-old boy was shot in a Bronx neighborhood where Douse lived. That shooting took place 2 miles from where Douse was later shot to death.

Douse was also charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing in the incident.

The charges were later dropped, according to News 12 Long Island. At the time, prosecutors did not give a reason but said the case was pending further investigation.

The Bronx District Attorney's Office did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment Sunday.

Reagan had it right when he talked about supporting the Kerr/Mills bill where the federal government provides money to the states and local communities to be used at the discretion of the state to help those in need.
As usual, that bill was rejected in lieu of a federally run government program.
There's a reason Medicare funds have dried up and doctors are turning away Medicare patients by the droves. The government can't manage anything and it's become a time-consuming and costly bureaucratic nightmare of regulations and paperwork.
This was just the first step to controlling the masses. Obamacare is the coup d'état.
When the government controls your health care, it controls you.
It's obvious to everyone by now it's disrupting the marketplace, it's going to cost more money than anyone expected and 30 million people will still be uninsured.
The majority have always been against it as the solution to the health care problem and still are.
So the only question left is why would you want the government to control you and make personal decisions for you?
Once again Carol you're demonstrating that you don't know what the hell you're talking about. Kerr, Mills took effect on October 1, 1960 was monitored by Congress for three years and was determined to be a complete failure. Only 28 states out of 50 even bothered to participate. It also involved intrusive means testing and in many jurisdictions that included not only the applicant but their families also. Nine states also had recovery programs where an individual's home could be seized after death to repay benefits received. In August 1993 only 148,000 elderly were receiving any assistance under the program less than 1% of the elderly population. Kerr, Mills was a totally ineffective disaster. When you just hand money off to the states then you've got 50 different set of rules and increase the bureaucracy involved. With a federal system you have one set of rules for everyone.
Medicare funds have not dried up Carol and because of cost savings from the ACA part A has no unfunded liabilities for the foreseeable future.
The American College of Physicians would take issue with your claim that doctors are turning away Medicare patients in droves.
advocacyblog.acponline.org/.../facts-challeng... ;

Really Carol? Private insurance doesn't involve tons of paperwork?
Who says that the government is controlling you r healthcare? Doesn't private insurance do the same thing when a bunch of backroom pencil pushers and accountants tell your doctor what procedures he can order or what medications he can prescribe based on how much profit they're going to make. Isn't private insurance controlling a person's healthcare when they stop paying for treatment because of an arbitrary lifetime cap?
