One more example of municipal government mismanagement

Struggling Pennsylvania capital auctions Wild West artifacts

Sat, Jul 13 2013

By Michael Sadowski

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania | Sun Jul 21, 2013 9:29pm EDT

(Reuters)- Thousands of artifacts from the Wild West era were sold off during a week-long public auction by authorities in Pennsylvania's financially distressed state capital, ending on Sunday with nearly $4 million in sales.

A dentist chair used by famed gambler, gunfighter and dentist John Henry "Doc" Holliday and a foot locker built for sharpshooter Annie Oakley were among the items sold by Harrisburg's government at the auction, which was handled by Guernsey's of New York City.

The items were amassed by former Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed using millions of dollars of public funds to stock a proposed Wild West museum that never opened to the public.

"There were skeptics who didn't believe they'd get that much," Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey's, said of the more than $3.9 million raised through the auction.

"It's not going to save the city, but it's a good amount and hopefully it's enough to settle some debt," Ettinger said.

City officials have not announced any specific plans for the money.

Harrisburg is burdened with more than $300 million in debt, much of which stems from a failed incinerator project.

"Woof-woof" Black gangsta thug or victim of police harassment? You be the judge.

Florida starting linebacker Antonio Morrison has been suspended from the team after his second arrest in barely more than a month.

Gainesville Police say Morrison approached an officer's vehicle at the scene of a disturbance early Sunday morning and began barking at a police dog.

Morrison, 19, was arrested and charged with "interfering with police by harassing a police animal" and resisting arrest without violence after allegedly initially refusing to cooperate with officers' attempts to detain him. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Morrison was also arrested June 16 after allegedly punching a bouncer at a Gainesville nightclub. Though Florida coach Will Muschamp said at SEC media days he had not yet decided on a punishment for Morrison related to that incident, he announced Sunday he has suspended the rising sophomore in the wake of his latest arrest.

"I'm extremely disappointed in Antonio Morrison's decision making," Muschamp said in a statement released by Florida. "He has been suspended from the team and will miss at least two games to begin the season."

Florida opens Aug. 31 with Toledo, then travels to Miami in Week 2 -- a game where Morrison's absence could be keenly felt. The former four-star recruit from Illinois played in all 13 Florida games as a true freshman in 2012, starting three, and was expected to ascend to the starting lineup full-time this season.

According to the police report, a K9 officer named "Bear" was sitting inside a stopped police car outside a Gainesville nightclub Sunday morning when Morrison walked by. The report says Morrison approached and began making what he reportedly described as a "woof-woof sound" at the dog, interrupting the officers' investigation and leading to the arrest.

Morrison's June 16 arrest came on charges of simple battery. He later accepted a deferred prosecution agreement that would see the charges dismissed after six months if he fulfilled the terms of the agreement.

Lesson learned from this story:
Businesses will leave unfriendly Union/Democrat cities & states where it is a better environment.
There are automobile factories & jobs all over the U.S., bet most of the jobs left Detroit.
VW just build a new factory in Tennessee, starting fresh without unions. Michigan is now one, but the Democrats already destroyed that state.
http://www.nrtw.org/rtws.htm
Keep it up Democrats. You may end up getting what you want. Poverty for your offspring.
It's all about jobs. You on the left just don't get it. Handouts only last so long.
Both the pensions and health care benefits of most city and state (government) workers are going to be confiscated or written off within 10 years.

That's the inescapable conclusion from doing the math, and Detroit has already taken the first step down this road by declaring bankruptcy, effectively abandoning its pension obligations.

This affects schoolteachers, city workers, state workers, police, firefighters and everyone else on a government paycheck.

Yes, Detroit owes former government employees -- teachers, firefighters, cops and more -- a whopping $3.5 billion in current and future payments. Except Detroit doesn't have $3.5 billion to pay the pensions. The city is in a state of economic collapse. Remember, the U.S. government used billions in taxpayer money to help General Motors move its manufacturing offshore to countries like China. As a result of economically-insane actions and criminal mismanagement, a city that used to be the hub of industrial output in America has become a ghost town of abandoned buildings, crumbling infrastructure and financial destitution.

But even as all this was becoming apparent, the government workers there continued to collect fat paychecks and pensions, all based on the promise that endless population growth would out-pace the rise in pension obligations. Many pensioners are owed over $100,000 a year from the government, and this is true across California, Illinois and many other states as well.

Chicago, for example, owes $19 billion in pension payments that it doesn't have, and the city of Los Angeles is more than $30 billion in the hole.

Chicago will be next and Los Angeles? just send all the illegals to California and give the whole state back to Mexico.

Once again Carol you're demonstrating that you are the slowest kid in the class. You're obviously too stupid to know the difference between the national debt which is $17 trillion and the budget deficit which is estimated by the CBO to be $642 billion for 2013 which is down significantly from the trillion dollar plus deficits that we had when Obama took office. Here's how it works cupcake; when the government is spending more than it takes in we have a deficit. When it takes in more than it spends the we have a surplus. When George W Bush took office we were in a surplus mode but then he cut revenue by $3 trillion with his tax cuts and increased spending by $1.4 trillion with two unnecessary wars. The recession further cut into revenues and necessitated more spending to keep the financial sector from collapsing.
Private sector employment is growing nitwit and the public sector has dropped 3% since Obama took office. Under Bush public sector employment rose over 4%.
What moral decay Carol? Because same sex couples now get the same rights as other citizens? Rome when it fell was firmly under Christian control. One of the main reasons it fell is because it allowed it's infrastructure to deteriorate. If the Chinese are getting ahead of us it's because they're investing in their highways and rail lines, just the things that the Republicans are blocking.
Are you just abysmally stupid or are you a damned liar?
The Roman Empire had become too big to control.

The Roman population declined after people began fleeing with invasions and, also, the military became weaker and weaker.

There was a particularly long period of financial crisis which led to a slow collapse of the economy.

A general incompetence of emperors and failure of traditional politics led to a corrupt political structure and an oppressive burden of taxation. This, in turn, led to inflation and debasing of Roman currency which bred apathy and angst that caused many Romans to flee politics and later the "city-states" of the Empire, the urban foundation on which rested most of ancient life.

Aside from invasions, the comparisons sound very similar to me.

"The killer factor in California for a manufacturer to create, say, a thousand blue-collar jobs is a hostile government that doesn't want you there and demonstrates it in thousands of ways."

Few Americans today realize that the United States has overtaken Japan and now has THE highest corporate tax rate in the developed world.

Why would anyone want to start a business here, when they can do it for less money... and keep more of the money they make... by locating elsewhere?

Cancellation of health benefits for retirees are a no-brainer because these benefits are never guaranteed by law.

Cancellation of pension benefits are a more difficult issue that will be the subject of litigation. However, if the paying authority simply does not have the money, and cannot raise the money, then the pensioners become just another creditor.

Detroit is different than many other cities because there is nobody left to pay the taxes, and those few who are left are not paying because their property is worth less than the taxes.
