Six days after a Florida jury acquitted a Hispanic man in the shooting death of an African-American teen, President Barack Obama made his first extensive comments on the case, speaking in personal terms about his own experience of being black in America.

" Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago," the president said in the remarks, made Friday during a surprise appearance in the White House press room. Mr. Martin, a 17-year-old African-American, was shot and killed in Florida last year in a case that riveted millions of Americans and sparked debate over the state of race relations in the country.

WASHINGTON — First lady Michelle Obama will travel to Chicago on Saturday to attend the funeral of a 15-year-old student who was gunned down in President Obama's adopted hometown days after she performed at his inauguration, an administration official has confirmed.

The first lady will be joined by White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, the former Chicago Public Schools superintendent. The administration official spoke on the condition of anonymity, because the White House has not yet officially announced the trip.

WERE IS PRESIDENT OBAMA AT THESE FUNERAL??

A woman swam to safety in the Chesapeake Bay Friday night after her car plunged 40 feet off the Bay Bridge following a collision.
The woman was taken by helicopter to the shock trauma unit of the University of Maryland hospital. When rescue personnel reached her she was conscious and breathing, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel county fire department said.
The 8:35 p.m. crash, about one quarter mile from shore, shut down the bridge which normally carries traffic toward the Eastern Shore and Atlantic Ocean resorts. The backup was about four miles at 10:30 p.m,. the state police said.
The 22-year-old woman, who was not identified immediately, was “very fortunate,” said Battalion Chief Steve Thompson, a county fire department spokesman. He said she swam from her car to a bridge piling.
The crash involved a tractor trailer and two cars, Thompson said.
...and this is of interest in what way?

Great reporting. Given that the woman swam from her car to a bridge piling, seems redundant to state that she was "conscious and breathing."

It dismays me that many people can be bought for $100. We struggle every day under 7.5%+ unemployment FOR GOING ON FIVE YEARS, small businesses folding, unending racial strife, and yet Lord Obama wants us to love him because he is distributing checks for $100.

The medical loss ratio refund is a one-time occurrence that the insurance companies will learn to compensate for by reducing overhead, primarily by layoffs.

One casualty of this program will be any attempt at fraud prevention and detection. Why spend money on fraud detection when it will only place the company in a penalty situation? Better to lay off the fraud detection personnel, pay bogus benefits, and increase premiums.

The left wants Detroit's financial mess to be handled just like the GM/UAW bailout.

Wipe out the bondholders completely and use taxpayer dollars to bail out the union pension funds.

Trayvon Wannabe Faces Felony Charges

Kanye West 'may face felony attempted robbery charge' as video emerges of angry airport attack on photographer

By Daily Mail Reporter

PUBLISHED: 16:46 EST, 19 July 2013 | UPDATED: 22:27 EST, 19 July 2013

Kanye West may face a felony attempted robbery charge stemming from his airport altercation on Friday with a photographer, it has been claimed.

The 36-year-old singer, who recently welcomed his first child with reality star Kim Kardashian, charged a paparazzo who was peppering him with questions upon the singer's arrival at Los Angeles International Airport Friday.

The photographer was taken to a hospital following the assault and told authorities that he wants to press charges against West, TMZ reports.

Police officers will refer the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office as a felony attempted robbery rather than the lesser charge of battery, according to the website.

The case has been transferred to the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division for investigation as police suspect West committed an attempted robbery when he struck the photographer and tried to take his camera. Prosecutors will ultimately decide which charges will be filed, if any.

Good point and a puzzling one, too.

Bad Boys like Bubba Clinton, Tony Weiner, Brother Kwame and Spitzer ....they always seem to mesmerize the voter.

Good leadership gets kicked to the curb more often than not. And then the consequences come along and everyone acts surprised.

When a President would rather play golf than save a Benghazi Ambassador, when he sells illegal weapons to Mexican Cartels, when he spies on Journalists, uses the IRS to punish his enemies, spies on citizens, usurps the powers of other government branches, foments racial division at every turn and lies to the America public on a regular basis, he is seen as a 'bad boy' and portrayed as a celebrity.

It is a bizarre form of mass self-flagellation.

SAN FRANCISCO — On the eve of confirming Janet Napolitano as the next university president, UC regents on Wednesday faced the type of difficult financial, ethnic and political questions that await the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security at the 10-campus UC system.

The regents voted to raise tuition for graduate nursing programs while freezing fees for nearly all other students, and they appointed the next student regent, despite opposition from some Jewish and pro-Israel groups angered by her past advocacy of divesting university funds from Israel.

UC Berkeley student government leader Sadia Saifuddin, 21, the first Muslim to be student regent, won approval of all the regents except for Richard Blum, who abstained. Blum said he was concerned that her nomination to be the student voice on the board was too divisive and that he didn't know enough about her.

Blum is married to US Senator Diane Feinstein.

Detroit has its priorities in order:

With the city of Detroit facing an uncertain future after this week’s bankruptcy filing, the Detroit Red Wings are still hoping to have a new arena soon, the Tigers are defending their American League title and the Lions are preparing for the start of another NFL season.

During Detroit’s financial struggles over the years, it’s been largely business as usual on the ice and the playing field. The bankruptcy filing Thursday left the entire region a bit shaken, but the professional sports scene may be spared any dramatic impact.

Brian Holdwick, an executive vice president for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, says there’s no reason officials can’t still move forward with a $650 million plan for a new hockey arena.

Pro-basketball Hall of Fame member Charles Barkley believes that the verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman was the correct one.

RealClearPolitics:

CHARLES BARKLEY: Well, I agreed with the verdict. I feel sorry that young kid got killed. But they didn't have enough evidence to charge him. Something clearly went wrong that night. Clearly something went wrong. I feel bad for anybody who loses a kid, but if you looked at the case and you don't make it -- there was some racial profiling, no question about it. But something happened that changed the dynamic of that night, and I know -- that's probably not a popular opinion among most people but just looking at the evidence I agreed with the verdict.

I just feel bad because I don't like when race gets out in the media because I don't think the media has a pure heart, as I call it. There are very few people have a pure heart when it comes to race. Racism is wrong in any, shape, form -- a lot of black people are racist too. I think sometimes when people talk about racism, they say only white people are racist. There are a lot of black people who are racist. I don't like when it gets out there in the media because I don't think the media has clean hands.

MARIA BARTIROMO, CNBC: I'm glad you made that point.

BARKLEY: Obviously I feel sorry that young kid got killed but just judging by the evidence, I don't think that guy should have went to jail the rest of his life. Something happened bad that night, obviously.

BARTIROMO: I like what the juror said, they both should have walked away. And if there is a shadow of a doubt, there is a shadow of a doubt.

BARKLEY: And let me tell you, Mr. Zimmerman was wrong to pursue -- he was racial profiling. I think Trayvon Martin, God rest his soul, I think he did flip the switch and started beating the hell out of Mr. Zimmerman. But it was just a bad situation. And like I said, the main thing I feel bad for, it gives every black and white person who is racist a platform to vent their ignorance.

Barkley, from Alabama, has been outspoken on racial issues before, not always toeing the NAACP line. A former Republican, Barkley now conisders himself an independent. He may be the most prominent African American who has agreed with the Zimmerman verdict.

The president's lack of leadership has been on display since he entered office. But for a guy who pretends to care so much about his people, he has done little to nothing to help them. Expanding welfare to poor, black Americans is no way to help his people, as the black unemployment rate, Speaking out about gun control while ignoring the crime rate in America's cities like Chicago where blacks are disproportionately killing each other is a joke.
But Obama does not simply have an obligation to help his people. He took an oath of office as President of the United States of America which includes people of a multitude of races, religions, and backgrounds. Recall Obama's 2004 keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in which he declared, "There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America -- there's the United States of America." That speech was just one of the many that were full of beautiful prose and yet cynically (and successfully) used to sell the American people a bill of goods. For if the man that delivered that speech actually meant what he said, he would once again take to the airwaves and attempt to unite a country that years later is so deeply divided.
Obama's own race and upbringing should not play a role in how he governs a country as diverse and free as our own. He should not appoint other race-baiters like Holder to high office if it impairs their ability to do their job. And he should use his position to heal those who are feeling wronged by educating them on the judicial system, the responsibilities of living in a civil society, and respect for every American despite our differences.
And most importantly, Obama should lead. During his first term we could not escape Obama's face on the air waves as he gave speech after speech glorifying himself and his ability to part oceans. Now, we cannot tear him from the golf course or vacation spot to take to the airwaves and talk to his people about civil behavior in a free society. Instead of planting a vegetable garden and proposing "walking school buses," Michelle should be using her bully pulpit to teach respect for human life and property. Instead of expending resources figuring out how to further destroy Zimmerman's life, Holder should threaten criminal prosecution for those destroying property, blocking highways, threatening Zimmerman's life, and beating up journalists.
Rather than calling in liberal journalists for marching orders on praising ObamaCare, Obama should be using the stature of his office to encourage an end to false cries of racism and comparisons of Martin's death to the murder of 3000 Americans on 9/11. He should haul Al Sharpton into the Oval Office and tell him to "Shake it off. Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'." And then he can tell Sharpton to put on his "marching shoes" and get the hell out of his office. And finally, he should forget about inviting sports figures and Hollywood celebrities into the Oval Office and consider inviting in the Zimmerman jurors who are in hiding out of fear of retribution for simply doing their civic duty.
Alas, none of us should hold our breath waiting for Obama to take a stand and call for an end to the violence in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict. Obama has been fomenting racial tension since his community organizing and Jeremiah Wright days -- that is who he is and what he does. But it certainly does his people little good to take to the streets like a bunch of wild animals while the rest of civil society looks on appalled at what they are witnessing. As our streets are looking more and more like Egypt's Tahrir Square (replete with Martin supporters' jihad-like threats to behead Zimmerman), I am starting to feel less and less, to paraphrase Michelle, proud to be an American.
