so what about the other 10 times he raised taxes?
In 1981, Reagan signed the largest tax cut in history after Carter's dismal recession of high taxes and high unemployment. By reducing tax rates, he stabilized the economy and encouraged risk takers. The across-the-board tax cuts lowered the top income tax rates from 70% to 28%.

That alone unleashed a 20 year period of entrepreneurship and the U.S. economy tripled in size.

Many of Reagan’s so-called “tax increases” were actually ending deductions. One tax increase was a temporary increase in the federal gas tax from 4 to 9 cents. Another was a cigarette tax. Neither were increases in income tax.

In 1982, Reagan reluctantly signed a tax increase with the expectation of spending cuts in return. Congress reneged on their part.

If Reagan can be criticized, it's for raising the capital gains tax rate as well as the corporate rate in 1986. But isn't that what democrats want to do now?

The criticisms of Reagan increasing the deficit has to be weighed with a growing and propserous economy and the end of the Cold War.

We're still waiting for the benefits of this administration's overbloated deficit which has increased more in 1 year than Reagan's 8 years combined. And it's only going to get worse.

He's right. Most people just know it's wrong. On both sides of the fence. Even in France.
The only argument necessary is that it will open up a Pandora's Box once marriage is redefined. It won't be long before polygamists will be demanding their right to marry multiple partners.
And who would we be to say no to them after saying yes to gay couples? Wouldn't polygamists have the right to the kind of lifestyle they choose too?
Or incestuous relationships, say, between cousins or other distant or even close relatives?
There are some things you just don't mess around with.
Why should it matter to anyone if someone wants to have more than one wife or husband; which, is interesting, have any women had multiple husbands?
If people are consenting adults, why shouldn't cousins or other relatives be allowed to marry? In royal bloodlines it is preferred, keep the blood clean! In Switzerland they removed the law against incestous marriage. Why does anyone care what others do anyway? Why does marriage have to be defined by the rightwing Christians? Why don't you mind your own business?

A 22-year-old Commerce City, Colo. woman has been arrested and charged with providing a gun to the suspect in the killing of Colorado's Department of Corrections chief Tom Clements, The Denver Post reported late Wednesday.

The woman, Stevie Marie Vigil, is accused of buying a gun from a licensed firearms dealer earlier this month and then giving the gun to Evan Ebel, who is suspected of killing Clements, and who died after a high speed chase and shoot-out with law enforcement officers in Texas last week. Ebel, whose criminal record included convictions on robbery, menacing, and weapons charges, would have been barred from buying the gun legally himself.

The Republicans have stripped down their constituency to only “the worst of the worst” Americans:“white supremacists, misogynists and other dead enders.” Obama’s Democrats have absorbed the rest of the GOP, to become the New Republican Party of austerity and war.The Democrats have taken positions which were once the sole property of the GOP.”

The plight of the Republican Party and its damaged brand are much in discussion recently. Republicans are in a state of despair over their loss in the 2012 presidential election and, as is always the case, debate among themselves about the reasons for their defeat. Despite the absence of polling or other data which might indicate a Mitt Romney victory, they had high hopes of defeating Barack Obama. They used every opportunity to undo and weaken his initiatives but they made the error of listening only to those within their bubble, and created needless enmity among enough white Americans to help Obama win convincingly.

Their meme of labeling 47% of Americans as deadbeats did not exclude white people, and sealed their doom among those voters they needed. The anti-immigrant “self deportation” plan turned Latino swing voters into a solid part of the democratic bloc. The gender gap won’t go away as long as Republican candidates outdo one another with sexist comments about birth control and abortion.

Yet there is another factor which spells, if not doom, bad omens for the Republicans. Simply put, the Democrats have taken positions which were once the sole property of the GOP and in so doing have either held down their turnout or stolen voters away from them altogether.

“The Democratic Party is now the Republican Party.”

We're still waiting for the benefits of this administration's overbloated deficit which has increased more in 1 year than Reagan's 8 years combined. And it's only going to get worse.
Bruce Bartlett:

Almost immediately upon enactment of the 1981 tax cut, Reagan came under enormous pressure to do something about the federal budget deficit. While his preferred approach was to cut spending as much as necessary, it was not politically possible to so. His aides began pressuring him to support a tax increase. Conservative activists were appalled that Reagan would even consider such a thing, but he eventually endorsed the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982. According to a Treasury Department analysis, it raised taxes by close to one percent of GDP, equivalent to $150 billion per year today, and was probably the largest peacetime tax increase in American history.

This was just the first of many tax increases that President Reagan endorsed and signed into law. There were 11 major tax increases during his administration. And this doesn’t count the fact that Reagan intentionally delayed the start of tax indexing, which was part of the 1981 tax bill, until 1985 so as to capture a lot of anticipated bracket-creep for the Treasury. In fact, it was the failure of inflation to come in as fast as White House economists expected that created much of the deficit problem. I estimate that lower than expected inflation and the loss of bracket creep was responsible for about half the budget deficit in 1981 and 1982. It’s also worth noting that the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which was revenue-neutral in the long run, was a fairly substantial revenue-raiser its first year, increasing taxes by $18.6 billion or 0.41 percent of GDP.

According to a table in Reagan’s last budget (FY 1990), the cumulative legislated tax increase during his administration came to $132.7 billion as of 1988 ($367 billion today). This compared to a gross tax cut of $275.1 billion. Thus Reagan took back about half the 1981 tax cut with subsequent tax increases.

As with his California tax increases, Reagan had little to say about them afterwards. In his diary, he says only that the 1982 TEFRA bill “is the price we have to pay to get the budget cuts.” He later tried to repudiate his consistent support for tax increases after 1981. But it’s clear that getting control of the deficit in the 1980s required both spending cuts and higher revenues.

In the end, Reagan’s tax legacy fits neither the right-wing nor left-wing pigeonholes. Although he cut taxes when he could, he raised them when he had to. That’s something self-styled Reaganites today should remember.

Speaking of stealing:
WASHINGTON -- Dale Peterson, an Alabama Republican state official famous for flaunting his rifle in campaign ads promising to be tough on crime, was arrested Wednesday and charged with shoplifting a can of cashews. The arrest, first reported by Yellowhammer.com , marked the second time in six months that Peterson has been accused of stealing.
His new arrest occurred at a Sam's Club, where police said employees watched Peterson eat a can of cashews in the store, then place the empty can back on a shelf. Store security guards confronted Peterson on his way out. He was released from custody after posting $1,000 bond.
Peterson was charged in October with stealing paper towels and beer from a Walmart. Employees said he pushed his way through the checkout line without paying for the items in his cart, according to police. Peterson later said the incident was "a mistake"
Peterson's arrests are noteworthy in part because he made national news in 2010 for his tough-talking stance on crime during an unsuccessful run for Alabama agriculture commissioner. In a campaign ad that quickly went viral, Peterson suggested his opponents were "thugs and criminals," and accused them of "stealing yard signs in the dark," and "bragging about receiving illegal money on Facebook."
