The Fading Conservative Brand

....A lot of this applies to the psychology of contemporary political conservatism. There is in it so much anger, so much defensiveness, and “a total absence of criteria for self-criticism.” After a while, you just don’t want much to do with it. In the Eighties, and even into the Nineties, conservatism was the future. It sure felt that way. Now, I can’t say liberalism feels like the future the way conservatism did back then — maybe I’m just older now, and can’t be that optimistic about politics of any sort — but the conservatism we have on offer today absolutely feels like a dead end.

I know, I know, none of this griping is new. More than a few of us on the Right have been saying things like this for some time, though the critique remains an outsider one. Eventually it will break through; defeat upon defeat has a way of bringing the most thick-skulled ideologues to their senses.

repeating history?
The 2012 election was not only a dismal showing for the Republicans but the continuation of a dismal, 20-year trend. Out of the last six presidential elections, four have gone to the Democratic nominee, at an average yield of 327 electoral votes to 210 for the Republican. During the preceding two decades, from 1968 to 1988, Republicans won five out of six elections, averaging 417 electoral votes to the Democrats’ 113. In three of those contests, the Democrats failed to muster even 50 electoral votes.
http://www.commentarymagazine.com/article/how...
And it is no wonder that Republican policies can seem stale; they are very nearly identical to those offered up by the party more than 30 years ago. For Republicans to design an agenda that applies to the conditions of 1980 is as if Ronald Reagan designed his agenda for conditions that existed in the Truman years.
more 'RINOs'. VERY prevailing theme and all that.
All good Marxist sheep believe their handler's propaganda. It's how and why you stay on the reservation. Your first 40 years of childhood were the hardest and don't believe everything you read or see on the internet just because there's a picture or democrat with a quote next to it. In the age of information...Cut-n-Paste ignorance is still your choice.

it is good news, because while there was an increase in shovel ready jobless claims, there was a decrease in green shovel ready jobless claims and that was offset by the birth/death model and three trillion imagined new small businesses that will be adjusted to the actual three new small businesses the month after especially when an election is near.

Hell it doesn't even reduce spending. It reduces the increase in spending. Let's say you spent $100 last year on beer. You plan to spend $150 this year. Your wife says no. So you compromise and agree on $125. You didn't cut spending you just agreed not to spend as much as you planned.$85 billion dollars is a joke. If they have to do what every one is screaming about over $85 billion then we are in a whole lot more trouble than they are letting on.

Is sequestration better than nothing?

The inability of Republicans to plainly answer that question is giving President Obama the upper hand in the ongoing spat over automatic decreases to automatic increases in federal spending due to kick in a week from Friday.

Republicans, especially Defense Department stalwarts, have spent 19 months doomsaying the reductions. The cuts have been described in apocalyptic terms over and over and over again.“Harsh.”“Brutal.”“Devast ating.”

Did FEMA Create a Youth Army?

Posted on November 30, 2012

Q: Did the Department of Homeland Security create a “standing army of government youth” known as FEMA Corps.

A: No. FEMA Corps is a civilian operation within AmeriCorps, a federal community service program. FEMA Corps prepares and responds to disasters. Its members, ages 18 to 24, carry no weapons.

A few readers sent us this email, which dresses up conspiracy theories with unrelated photographs and selected snippets from a government press release.

The gist of the email is that the federal government is stockpiling bullets, instituting martial law and arming youths in President Barack Obama’s army of “Brown Shirts”— none of which is true.

The email attributes the source of the information to an article on www.itmakessenseblog.com . The site’s “We Believe” page claims that “Left wing progressives have infiltrated both the Democrat and Republican Party.” It also says:“modern liberalism and progressivism may still both support many of the same Socialistic, Communistic or Maoist policies.”

The email’s link to the article is broken. And the site no longer carries the article. But the blog has published other pieces that similarly warn of Obama’s ”‘brown shirt’ brigades” or “civilian national security force.”

This email is the most recent incarnation of a claim we debunked in 2008 and 2010.

sequester....

So here sit Republicans, teeth clenched, gripping their desks, waiting for the “devastating” cuts to explode the economy and just hoping that Obama will get some of the blame for having invented the thing. They are assuming that $85 billion less spent by the government will cause devastation in an economy of some $16 trillion. What a bunch of Keynesians.

If the cuts are so bad, why not just stop them? Quit the puffery about offsets versus tax hikes and just kill the monster they helped make. The Senate would surely go along and the president would only too happily sign.

As it is, Republicans and Obama look like two firemen standing outside of a burning building arguing about whether to use water from the hydrant or the truck to put it out.“Wait until you see my press release blaming you!” screams one.“Oh yeah, well I’m going to hit you with the snarkiest Tweets ever!” screams the other.

Republicans have rhetorically contorted themselves into what Obama has long accused them of being: politicians who would harm the American economy and people in order to win a political fight with him.
