Fiscal Footnote: Big Senate Gift to Drug Maker

By ERIC LIPTON and KEVIN SACK

Published: January 19, 2013

WASHINGTON — Just two weeks after pleading guilty in a major federal fraud case, Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology firm, scored a largely unnoticed coup on Capitol Hill: Lawmakers inserted a paragraph into the “fiscal cliff” bill that did not mention the company by name but strongly favored one of its drugs.

Senators Max Baucus, left, and Orrin Hatch, in June at a Finance Committee meeting, have received contributions from Amgen.

The language buried in Section 632 of the law delays a set of Medicare price restraints on a class of drugs that includes Sensipar, a lucrative Amgen pill used by kidney dialysis patients

The provision gives Amgen an additional two years to sell Sensipar without government controls. The news was so welcome that the company’s chief executive quickly relayed it to investment analysts. But it is projected to cost Medicare up to $500 million over that period.

Amgen, which has a small army of 74 lobbyists in the capital, was the only company to argue aggressively for the delay, according to several Congressional aides of both parties.

Amgen has deep financial and political ties to lawmakers like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, and Senators Max Baucus, Democrat of Montana, and Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, who hold heavy sway over Medicare payment policy as the leaders of the Finance Committee.

Again, you don't tell the whole story. Black Americans were already swayed to the Democrat Party by the late 1930s because of the New Deal and the Great Depression. Thousands had already fled the South by the 1960s.

Accusing the Republican Party of being against civil rights based on one Republican who supported the Constitution AND civil rights but believed it to be a states' rights issue instead of the federal government's is just part of the Big Lie and dismisses decades of legislation passed by Republicans precisely to ensure civil rights.

The majorty, if not all, of black Americans had already switched loyalites when big government came on the scene in the 1930s.

That's the problem of why we are where we are today. Not one Republican who has become the liberal's "straw man" to excuse their own sins of the past.

I love this post from DuPont to Carol this morning:
#844319

Carol, you've been spouting that same delusional nonsense for as long as I've been following this thread.
The truth is that President Obama is for all the people, not just the wealthy for whom the GOP panders.
People like me see a lot Carol, I see how people like you want to deny citizens of equal rights because of who they love and choose to marry. I see how GOP state governments tried to suppress the votes of minorities. I paid attention to the plight of the Sensata workers in Illinois as Bain dismantled their plant and shipped it to China. I see hoe the GOP governor and legislature in Virginia passed a law requiring women to submit to an invasive and unnecessary medical procedure if they chose to terminate a pregnancy.
I don't know what happened to turn you into a bitter bigot and quite frankly I don't much care. People like you are increasingly irrelevant.

NY Democrat:“Please Don’t Release That Document Showing We Actually Do Want to Confiscate Guns”

Posted on January 19, 2013 by Jim22

From Mental Recession:

Late last night, New York Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, one of the few Republicans with a strong enough spine to stand up to the new gun legislation, released the following statement on his Facebook page.

In the video clip (seen below), McLaughlin is prepared to discuss a list of original proposals from the Democrats regarding gun control. The list, much in the same vein that Governor Cuomo himself had discussed, actually proposed the confiscation of guns and clips.”

The list is below the fold

The list of proposals that Democrats would rather you didn’t see, can be seen below.

1. Confiscation of “assault weapons”
2. Confiscation of ten round clips
3. Statewide database for ALL Guns
4. Continue to allow pistol permit holder’s information to be released to the public
5. Label semiautomatic shotguns with more than 5 rounds or pistol grips as “assault weapons”
6. Limit the number of rounds in a magazine to 5 and confiscation and forfeiture of banned magazines
7. Limit possession to no more than two (2) magazines
8. Limit purchase of guns to one gun per person per month
9. Require re-licensing of all pistol permit owners
10. Require renewal of all pistol permits every five years
11. State issued pistol permits
12. Micro-stamping of all guns in New York State
13. Require licensing of all gun ammo dealers
14. Mandatory locking of guns at home
15. Fee for licensing, registering weapons

An anti American traitor, like you. I listened to a caller into Randi Rhodes yesterday who sounded exactly like you, it was totally amazing. Do you all read the same playbook? She tore him apart btw and he was left sputtering and then resorted to the same insults that most rightwing men do on here. What a trip.

You have to go to history to show your party being interested in equality.

So just what is your point??

You get satisfaction out of knowing that, once upon a time, your party actualy cared about all Americans, not just older white folks??

While today's Republican Party is full of hatred towards the poor, immigrants, hispanics, women, gays, blacks, etc.

Are you happy with your party calling everyone who disagrees with it socialists, or worse??

That did not help you in the election, where your party was rejected in a huge way.

Democrats picked up seats in both Senate and House. Though the Repubs have a slight majority in the House, the Democrats recieved more total votes for House races than did the Republicans.

The question you should be asking is why your party changed to one of whites only racism, hatred towards minorities of all types, hostility towards women's reproductive rights.

Using data from 50 years ago and more only highlights how far into the swamp your party has gone.

So, basically what you are saying is that the Republiclown Party was ONCE UPON A TIME an actual political party for majorities of Americans.

Not the rump party of racists, anti-gays, anti-abortion, anti-science, creationism believing nitwits that it's become.

You make yourself appear increasingly foolish.

The GAO report was not mentioned by any of the Obama Team Cheerleaders. It stressed reining in government spending to sustain the future.
That is not on the Obama Team Cheerleader's talking points memos.
Why would they intentionally omit telling you something as crucial as this? It's your future too.
