Disasters such as Sandy always attract freeloaders.
Cut out the pork (such as Alaska fisheries), the government overtime, the roller coasters, the boardwalks, and vacation homes for millionaires first.
Then require those who want taxpayer compensation to relocate elsewhere rather than rebuilding in the flood zone.
Then compensate the truly "poor and disadvantaged."
I'm not against eliminating pork, as mentioned in last post, I wish we could just have clean bills. What about flood zones on the Mississippi, Colorado and Iowa rivers? I'm not sure how much flood insurance costs in those areas, but in Florida we have high hurricane insurance costs with high deductibles. Perhaps we should have a national disaster tax to cover these problems, since they 're not going away and get rid of the insurance companies altogether.
The fact that there are so many still without heat in the winter is a disaster.

What ever came from Cory Bookers experiment, living on foodstamps?
In addition; perhaps those 67 congressmen who voted no on Sandy relief should have had to make the trip to see the devastation first hand and then vote.
They like to keep busy harrassing the poor and disadvantaged; meanwhile the the big takers go untouched.
We shall see what actual loopholes are going to be closed. Sounds like total bs to me.
Booker's experiment ended and proved nothing__pure political stunt that's been done before. Simply eating less doesn't include the stress that brokeazz people deal with day in and day out.

Sandy relief presents some unusual problems for many of the destroyed beachfront homes were not primary residences or even personal weekend/vacation homes but investment properties rented out for mega bucks during summertime. FEMA should not be providing disaster money for many of those homes but there is plenty of room for hanky panky.

The problem of course is that post disaster everyone wants everything in a giddyup hurry so all sorts of mistakes are made. The governments (all levels) need to focus on pre disaster planning in an effort to lighten governments post disaster burden.

Living within feet of the ocean involves financial risk__or at least should.

i agree about zero tolerance. but my problem is.....

For some, the Welfare Queen is an epic political lie. Reagan invented her, and Americans keep buying the lie.

"It's one of those persistent symbols that come up every election cycle," says Kaaryn Gustafson, author of "Cheating Welfare: Public Assistance and the Criminalization of Poverty."

"This image of the lazy African-American woman who refuses to get a job and keeps having kids is pretty enduring. It's always been a good way to distract the public from any meaningful conversations about poverty and inequality.''

For others, the Welfare Queen reveals an uncomfortable truth: More Americans have turned the social safety net into a hammock.

"You hear these horror stories going around that people are buying junk food with food stamps and paying cash for vodka and beer and things not covered with food stamps -- that gets people mad," says Steven Hayward, author of "The Age of Reagan: The Fall of the Old Liberal Order: 1964-1980."

The Welfare Queen has become such a legendary character in political circles that her existence is treated like Bigfoot. Most scholars say she never existed, while a few insist the truth is out there.

Bigfoot. Most. Few.

Economists consider SNAP one of the most effective forms of economic stimulus. Moody’s Analytics estimates that in a weak economy, every dollar increase in SNAP benefits generates $1.72 in economic activity. Similarly, CBO rated an increase in SNAP benefits as one of the two most cost-effective of all spending and tax options it examined for boosting growth and jobs in a weak economy.

According to the National Academy of Science poverty measures, which count SNAP as income, SNAP kept about 4 million people out of poverty in 2010 and lessened the severity of poverty for millions of others.

anyone see any emphatic statements in there?

Liberals and how they think:

WINFREY NARRATION: After Sarah Palin attended a New York Yankees game with her 14-year-old daughter Willow, David cracked a sex joke about a baseball player and the young girl. Letterman says he thought Sarah Palin was with her oldest daughter, Bristol, who made headlines when she became pregnant at age 17.

WINFREY TO LETTERMAN: Why did you apologize?

LETTERMAN: I’ll tell you why I apologized. I felt like Sarah Palin was somebody I wanted to continue to be able to make fun of and I felt like if I don’t apologize, if I don’t sincerely express my regret, I will not be able to go forward making fun of her. And truly, I felt bad for the 14-year-old. You know, that was just like, oh nice going, you got the wrong daughter. That was just dumb, stupid joke that fell into dumb luck and got worse. -

A Georgia mother shot an ex-convict six times to protect her and her children after he apparently forced his way into the family’s home.
The mom heard knocks on her front door Friday and assumed it was just a solicitor, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
She told her 9-year-old twins not to answer the door and, when the visitor began repeatedly ringing the doorbell, she called her husband at his job and he told her to gather the children and hide.
“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver.”
According to the Journal-Constitution, the father then dialed 911 and his wife, who works from a home office, hid with the children in a crawlspace.
By that time, according to the paper, the intruder had used a crowbar to forcibly enter the home, and made his way to the home office.
“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver,” Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The woman fired six bullets, five of which hit Paul Ali Slater in the face and neck area, Chapman said. But Slater, who has arrests dating to 2008 and was released from jail in August, was still conscious.
“The guy’s face down, crying,” the sheriff said. The woman told him to stay down or she’d shoot again.
While down, the woman and her children ran to a neighbor’s house, and the injured intruder made it out of the home and into his car, the paper reported.
Authorities found Slater a short time later bleeding profusely in a neighbor’s driveway.
“I’m dying. Help me,” he told them, according to Chapman.
Slater was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center and is expected to survive, the sheriff said.
Good thing she had a gun protected under the 2nd amendment.

I will concur that I am not aware of all that was in the bill; which is another issue altogether. Let's have clean bills without sneaking other stuff in them.
The amount that was released went to flood insurance companies? I'm not sure I understand that. Why not just directly help the people instead of insurance companies?
My attempt at humor may have worked if you'd been aware of the recent study that revealed an alarming (yeah right) increase in food stamp abuse. The study found more and more people are using their freebies on junk food, alcohol, sex clubs and pornography.

Giving aid directly to the victims eliminates too many steps in the process, too many slices of pie.

West Antarctic Ice Sheet warming twice earlier estimate

A new analysis of temperature records indicates that the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet is warming nearly twice as fast as previously thought.

US researchers say they found the first evidence of warming during the southern hemisphere's summer months.

They are worried that the increased melting of ice as a result of warmer temperatures could contribute to sea-level rise.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The scientists compiled data from records kept at Byrd station, established by the US in the mid-1950s and located towards the centre of the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS).

Previously scientists were unable to draw any conclusions from the Byrd data as the records were incomplete.

The new work used a computer model of the atmosphere and a numerical analysis method to fill in the missing observations.

The results indicate an increase of 2.4C in average annual temperature between 1958 and 2010.

"What we're seeing is one of the strongest warming signals on Earth," says Andrew Monaghan, a co-author and scientist at the US National Centre for Atmospheric Research.

"This is the first time we've been able to determine that there's warming going on during the summer season." he added.

Is it ever really 'summer' in Antartica?

Isn't most of Hollyweird avowed socialists, marxists or communists?

I mean, they can't squawk enough about paying their fair share and gun control when they go to Canada to make films to avoid paying taxes and star in violent films using guns.

Sounds to me like they have a contradiction in interests - just wanting to preserve their own.

Interesting though that not one thin dime has been cut from the budget since the last debt ceiling fiasco and this president is now once again saying he's raising it no matter what.

Sounds to me like he has a contradiction in interests too and doesn't have to worry about reelection.

Wasn't it you who brought up the New Party and this president's affiliation?
