In the wake of the tragic shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last month, the National Rifle Association proposed that the best way to protect schoolchildren was to place a guard — a “good guy with a gun”— in every school, part of a so-called National School Shield Emergency Response Program.

Indeed, the N.R.A.’s solution to the expansion of gun violence in America has been generally to advocate for the more widespread deployment and carrying of guns.

...I recently visited some Latin American countries that mesh with the N.R.A.’s vision of the promised land, where guards with guns grace every office lobby, storefront, A.T.M., restaurant and gas station. It has not made those countries safer or saner.

...As guns proliferate, legally and illegally, innocent people often seem more terrorized than protected.

SonicFilter stop the silly nonsense! People buy guns to collect them just like people collect stamps, coins, knives etc.. etc.. When you start telling people what they can and cannot have then you have a socialist Government. Why don't we make cocaine, meth and LSD illegal? That will surely take them off the streets! Do you think? If banning guns worked, Washington, DC and New York City would be the safest cities in the country. Since 1976, it's been illegal in Washington, DC to own any handguns or to keep any type of gun in your home unlocked and fully assembled. However, Washington, DC is the murder capital of the United States next to Detroit.
New York City has had severe gun control laws since 1911, yet it also ranks among the most dangerous places in the country. In both cities, violent criminals can easily obtain the most deadly weapons on the streets within minutes.

1 Only in America could the rich people – who pay 86% of all income taxes – be accused of not paying their “fair share” by people who don’t pay any income taxes at all.
2 Only in America could people claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when they have a black President, a black Attorney General, and roughly 18% of the federal workforce is black while only 12% of the population is black
3 Only in America could they have had the two people most responsible for our tax code, Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury Department and Charles Rangel who once ran the Ways and Means Committee, BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.
4 Only in America can they have terrorists kill people in the name of Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that Muslims might be harmed by the backlash.
5 Only in America would they make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege while we discuss letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just ‘magically’ become American citizens.
6 Only in America could the people who believe in balancing the budget and sticking by the country’s Constitution be thought of as “extremists.”
7 Only in America could you need to present a driver’s license to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote.
8 Only in America could people demand the government investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S. oil company (Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis shoes (Nike).
9 Only in America could the government collect more tax dollars from the people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a Trillion dollars more than it has per year – for total spending of $7-Million PER MINUTE, and complain that it doesn’t have nearly enough money.
10 Only in America could politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000.00 a plate campaign fund-raising event.

Justice Scalia:‘It Will Have to Be Decided’ Whether Gov’t Can Regulate Some Types of Guns

Conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on Sunday left open the possibility that some types of guns could be regulated by the government, such as assault weapons capable of holding 100 rounds of ammunition.

“What the opinion in Heller said is that it will have to be decided in future cases, what limitations upon the right to keep and bear arms are permissible,” Scalia said on “Fox News Sunday,” referring to the 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller that protected the right to possess firearms.

“Some [limitations] undoubtedly are because there were some that were acknowledged at the time,” he continued.“There was a tort called a “frighting” which if you carried around a really horrible weapon just to scare people, like a head ax or something, that was I believe a misdemeanor. So yes there are some limitations that can be imposed, what they are will depend on what the society understood were reasonable limitations at the time.”

The 76-year-old justice declined to speculate on what that could mean specifically for certain high-powered weapons.

“We’ll see,” he said.“Obviously the amend does not apply to arms that cannot be carried — it’s to “keep and bear,” so it doesn’t apply to cannons, but I suppose there are handheld rocket launchers that can bring down airplanes that will have to — it’ll have to be decided.”

As a constitutional originalist, Scalia said those determinations will have to be made “very carefully” looking within the context of 18th-century history.

“My starting point and probably my ending point will probably be what limitations are within the understood limitations that the society had at the time,” he said.“They had some limitations on the nature of arms that could be borne.”

There are by some estimates, 45 to 47 percent in this country that pay no income tax what-so-ever so that leaves the middle class and rich to pay a majority of taxes. Those at the high end are paying 35 to 40 percent of their income to taxes. Large and small businesses are the job creators in this country and supply most of the jobs in the private sector. So what’s Obama's solution? Let’s tax them some more until it reaches a point where they cannot operate, cannot invest in new equipment or new technology, cannot hire new employees and all at the same time trying to meet Union Demands and NOW OBAMACARE! They will eventually take their business elsewhere or simply close their doors and there is nothing you can do about it. Then what do we have? A government that has nothing coming in by way of taxes except from the middle class. Washington would have to close its doors as well which might just be a good thing!!

Probably didn't get the whole story of the Portland mall shooter either.

Moshx! Excellent! Gun Control.... Myths, Lies and downright stupidity!

On 20/20, ABC anchor John Stossel discussed the self-defensive benefits of gun ownership, debunking the myth that "gun control reduces crime."
The segment aired during 20/20's recurring series, "Myths, Lies & Downright Stupidity," based on Stossel's book of the same title.
Citing the recent Federal Appeals Court for DC ruling overturning Washington, D.C.'s ban on gun ownership, Stossel talked to the pro-gun plaintiff
in the case, Tom Palmer, and pointed out that the murder rate in D.C. increased after the city's gun ban:
"Since Washington's gun law passed, the murder rate actually increased, even while America's murder rate dropped.
It's because guns can also save lives, says Palmer, as one saved his years ago in California."

Great Video!!!

New York City has had severe gun control laws since 1911, yet it also ranks among the most dangerous places in the country. In both cities, violent criminals can easily obtain the most deadly weapons on the streets within minutes.
In Heller, a 5-4 majority, led by Justice Antonin Scalia, held that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a gun unconnected with service in a militia, and to use the gun for traditionally lawful purposes, such as in the home for self defense. The decision invalidated the District of Columbia's handgun ban — considered the strictest in the nation — and its requirement that firearms kept in the home be disassembled or have a trigger lock.

However, the majority also said the Second Amendment right is not unlimited, and gave examples of some limits.

"From Blackstone through the 19th-century cases, commentators and courts routinely explained that the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose," wrote Scalia. "For example, the majority of the 19th-century courts to consider the question held that prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons were lawful under the Second Amendment or state analogues."

Nothing in the Heller ruling, he said, should be read to cast doubt on "longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms."

Another "important limitation," explained Scalia, was contained in the justices' 1939 decision in Miller v. U.S. "Miller said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those 'in common use at the time.' We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of 'dangerous and unusual weapons,' " he wrote. Based on Miller, the Second Amendment does not protect weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes, such as short-barreled shotguns, he added.

http://www.law.com/jsp/nlj/PubArticleNLJ.jsp...

so as you can see, the opinion of a wingnut will have little bearing on a assault weapon ban.

Your beloved Democrats voted to use force in BOTH wars as well! Unlike Bush, their hero Obama did not get Congressional Approval when he took us into Libya and then called for a Stand Down as one of our U.S. Ambassadors was murdered along with other embassy personnel and those that tried to save them!! Bush was in office less than 8 months before 9/11 and it was Clinton's 8 years in office that eased up on National Security! Not taking out Osama when he had the chance and Firing missiles at a baby milk factory did not hack it! Most Americans agreed with George Bush and for taking out terrorist training camps in Afghanistan responsible for almost 4,000 American deaths on 911 but not these clowns! Then we have Iraq and their no WMD's nonsense? What the hell do you call nerve agents Saddam used on Iranians and his OWN people as hundreds of thousands died from it? Kool- aid?? IT'S KNOWN FACT THAT HE HAD WMD'S!! What is so hard to understand that?? What did Saddam do with them? Archeologists many years from now will probably find them buried thousands of feet underground or he simply had them shipped off to Syria prior to the war! Take your pick! Furthermore, Saddam continually violated U.N. Resolutions from the First Gulf War and that in itself gave us every right to go back in!
