The biggest problem I see is that you people who want to ban 'assault' weapons don't have a clue about weapons in the first p[lace.

Sorry not a jew and who says it should cost 40k a year to house a prisoner??

So you think it's smarter to go after people who are not breaking the law than people who are? LOL, no wonder you voted for obama

That's because of the culture of entrapment. A cop in the next town won an award for issuing the most amount of seatbelt tickets! How ridiculous.
Cops are people with guns who can abuse their power or can snap and kill people too.
Utah State Trooper Lisa Steed, recently honored for making record numbers of DWI arrests, has been fired and is facing a class-action lawsuit by dozens of innocent people who are claiming they were falsely arrested and convicted of DWI. Many of her victims were non-drinkers who were stopped with no probable cause at DWI checkpoints. Evidence shows that scores of breathalyzer and blood test BAC results were inflated and falsely reported by this officer. There is another cop in Chicago facing similar accusations. Having been the victim of a false DWI arrest in North Carolina (whose case was eventually dismissed with an apology from the Court) I'm willing to bet this is a common practice among many cops.

There were red flags with the Columbine shooters that were ignored.

Students even reported violent emails sent to them by one of the shooters which were ignored.

Colorado now has a heightened awareness policy. Among them:

Schools should work to change the "code of silence" by emphasizing to students, teachers and parents that violent threats are never appropriate and should be taken seriously.

School districts should establish anonymous reporting hot lines or similar systems.

Colorado schools should adopt one or more bullying-prevention programs and adopt a code of behavior, then ensure that the code is enforced fairly.

...The Newtown shooter needed intervention long before the tragedy.

We have to change the complacency about mental health intervention as well as instill a heightened awareness among students and parents to prove any threatening or even disturbing behaviors anonomously.

An effort to ban criminals from society would be a smarter approach. Easier too.
We are finally shaken out of our complacency. We now have to calmly and rationally address the reason for these violent acts among our young people and find the most effective solutions.

Changing laws that have made intervention nearly impossible is the first practical solution. Raising a heightened awareness to recognize and report red flags of threatening or disturbing behaviors is another.

Bringing attention to military-type assault rifles that cause the most damage and attempting to ban them another.

But taking away guns from law-abiding citizens' for their own protection by government force is not the solution.

Even if guns were banned altogether, it wouldn't stop those from getting their hands on them who aren't law-abiding citizens.
There are millions of gun owners in this country who are responsible and law-abiding compared to the few who somehow get their hands on them and use them as a means to commit mass murder.
If it weren't guns, they would find another way.
That's the problem.
What is your definition of a military-type assault rifle? Is a Mossberg Tactical 22 a military-type assault rifle? It sure does look scary!(Google it). The fact is a plain looking .22 cal. Marlin Model 60 "squirrel gun" is probably more dangerous. It has more capacity, is more accurate and can fire up to 4 rounds per second.

The most popular form of American violence is not video games, TV shows or movies. It's NFL football, followed closely by college football, yet Americans worship this extremely violent sport and their participants. Schools and parents encourage their children to participate in it. I think it's time for the government to take a closer look at this violent, dangerous and sometimes deadly sport.

Following is the letter of resignation sent last week by former President George Bush to the National Rifle Association: May 3, 1995
Dear Mr. Washington,
I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as "jack-booted thugs." To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as "wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms" wanting to "attack law abiding citizens" is a vicious slander on good people.
Al Whicher, who served on my [ United States Secret Service ] detail when I was Vice President and President, was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving his country -- and serve it well he did.
In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.
John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges. The same is true for the F.B.I.'s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench. His integrity and honor are beyond question.
Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government's "go ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens." (Your words)
I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.'s objectives, particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.
However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.
You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre's unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list. Sincerely,[ signed ] George Bush

Here we go.

We can't define an assault rifle so gee whiz, lets pass them out to each & every wacko out there.

We can't define pornography so lets just allow it all on public TV.

We had a ban, funny isn't it. Ban all semi automatics & list those not included.

Any semi automatic new the market is banned unless they can get an approval rating.

Manufacturers can not make it easy to convert & its a felony to convert a legal gun to an illegal one.

Ban all clips over say 10.

Violators will lose their right to own a gun.

Another Theory for Mass Murder: White-Male Privilege

Pasadena City College professor of history and gender studies Hugo Schwyzer tells National Review Online that he believes many crimes, dating back to John Hinckley’s attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, are caused in part by “frustrated white male privilege.” In recent years, according to Schwyzer, mass murders have increasingly been committed by “white males from bucolic suburban settings” who may be experiencing a form of cognitive dissonance; having been told “the world is supposed to be your oyster,” these young men are “miserable in the midst of abundance” and feel “powerless compared to everyone else around them.”

Pointing to the example of Nidal Hasan, whose interest in Islamic extremism and contact with terrorist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was cited as the motive for his attack on the Fort Hood army base, Schwyzer laments that a similar linkage between culture and violence isn’t made when white males commit mass murder.

Australia outlawed these weapons 16 years ago, after a mass killing with an assault rifle.
They have not had a single mass killing since.
Proof enough for me.
Get nuts like you off the streets, get assault weapons banned and collected.
Put a bounty on anyone who doesn't turn them in.
Your own 'buddies' will turn your dumb azz in, or shoot you for the bounty!!
You still don't get it, dufus. You have no credibility. You can't even fix the gun problem in your own goddam backyard. An idiot knows you won't be able to fix any other problem.
Assuming the Democrats aren't idiots, what's the real plan?
Assuming the Demcorats are idiots, why should anyone listen to them?
When you fix the gun problem in your own goddam backyard, then we'll listen to you. Until then, nothing you say will be taken seriously.

You still have one problem. The Constitution states "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Are you proposing that the Constitution be ignored?
What other parts of the Constitution should be ignored? Perhaps the parts that prevent the president from becoming the usual egomaniacal petty dictator and issuing edicts to the population as if he can write his won laws.
And, another issue. We have a civillian government. There are not two sets of rights, one for the civillians in government and another for the civillians not part of the governing elite. Everyone has the exact same rights.
Therefore, ALL civillians are subject to the same laws.
I'm guessing your concept allows the institution of a police state where there are two sets of rights, one for government and one for the rest of the population.
Nope. That won't fly in the United States. We don't like dictators and police states. Try something else.

i.e. right whiners don't think their is a gun violence problem. They must, because hey have never ever tried to fix it.

Republicans voted to cut police forces. Republicans voted to put assault type rifles back on the street.

A real plan would pull these high capacity weapons off the street & enact laws to help get guns ut of the hands of gang bangers.

But they don't.

They don't to placate dumbass morons like you.
