Barack Obama, our next President

" Before Massachusetts introduced teacher tenure in 1886, women were sometimes dismissed for getting married, becoming pregnant, wearing pants, or being out too late in the evenings."
In the early days of AT&T, when operators were the symbol of the telephone system, they had similar 'paternal' rules.

One example; Group Chief Operators, apparently important in the era, were Management employees, and the understanding was they were 'married' to the Telephone Company, and were uniformly single women. Usually by the time they made it to Chief Operator status, they were not young, perhaps 40's or 50's.

But if they married, they found that their duties as Group Chief Operators were given to other, single ladies, and they either retired or took a staff job, at far lower status.

Chief Operators were so important that the Telco's would send out cable trucks to bring them to work in storms. Trucks almost as big as deuce and a half.

----------

The rights of women have come a long way.

So why does your side want to put them back to that terrible era??

When I was in the classroom, very rarely did a principal want to be bothered with an unruly student. But, fortunately, I had a fail proof discipline system based on rewards and consequences. An entire bulletin board was taken up just for student names and five little nails beside each name. The first infraction resulted in the student having to come to the front of the room and put a red check by their name (made out of laminated circles) while everyone watched and I stopped talking (just for effect). The first check was a warning. The second red check resulted in sitting by the fence and missing 10 minutes of recess. The third check was sitting by the fence during the entire recess. The fourth check resulted in the student having to write a note themselves to their parents explaining their unacceptable behavior that day with my signature.
And this is the clincher....
Every student knew that if the note wasn't returned the very next day with their parents' signature - no exceptions, no excuses - they had a choice of either a whack on the bottom (if the parent had signed a corporal punishment agreement with the office) or a two page essay on how to correct their behavior. I only caught one student who tried to forge their parents' signature.
Students with no checks or only one check by their name at the end of the day - the other side of the laminated red check circles had a happy face sticker - got to come up one at a time and put up their happy face. At the end of the week, students who had 4 out of 5 happy faces that week got a sticker on their desk. After 10 stickers were accumulated, they were treated to something special - like ice cream in the lunchroom during classtime, for example, or playing games in the back of the classroom on Friday afternoon while the other students had to do an assignment.
You'd be surprised how many students begged to be whacked on the bottom instead of having to write an essay.
In all my years of teaching, I only had to give 3 students a whack on the bottom. Each time I would say, "Do I have your attention now?"
My students loved me, by the way. And I them. They respected having a fair and consistent learning environment and, therefore, they all learned.
I probably would have had to tell nuc to bend over and grab his ankles on a routine basis. But that kind of gives me the creeps.
Spanking nuc would involves countless hand washings with antibiotics.

Sounds like you had a good system there. Did the NEA give you flack over it?

All were long before unions had significant interest in public schools.
Varies by state and by region of state, in large cities there were fine multi story schools with heat, cafeteria's gymnasiums etc etc. The farm routes still had small one and two room schools and FYI when I first came to Florida in the later 1970's, in some public school districts, a bachelors degree was not required to teach full time.

That's funny.

As you say,'the right of public employees to collective bargaining'.

Think about it.

Why should any group of employees need some politicians to say they can form a union??

You have a funny idea of democracy if you think it's ok for the gov't to do that - any more than they can dictate what you eat, which is one of your pet peeves.

When people who work together are denied the right to collective bargaining, or discouraged intensely from it, all the talk of freedom and democracy in AMerica is just that: talk.

In your world, it's ok for people to commit treason by signing a secession petition, but it's bad if WalMart employees try to unionize in an attempt to make their lives better.

That's why you lost the election.

As Newt Said;

"The Republican Party cannot compete."

Not so.

Even the self proclaimed church lady Carol had quite a record for sleeping around before she settled on baby Daddy. At least one previous hubby and who know how many sleepovers??

Ever notice how those who were the most wicked in their youth later find religion and pretend God forgives them for it??
