When I was still in the classroom in the mid 1990s, the progressive agenda was very much alive and well.

The most liberal teachers were saying things like "if it involves common sense, you won't find it in the public school system" and "if you care, you won't last."

Even back then, the good teachers were leaving by the droves because of progressive politics tying their hands to teach effectively in the classroom.

The apathatic teachers and the ones who didn't care were the most happy because the unions kept giving them money to deal with it.

Are the students in the public schools with which you are "associated" doing better than the students in the rest of the country?

If not, your affiliation doesn't change the fact public schools are failing our students.

Some in GOP urge lawmakers to back tax hikes for changes in safety-net programs

A growing chorus of Republicans is urging House leaders to abandon their staunch opposition to higher tax rates for the wealthy with the aim of clearing the way for a broad deal that would also rein in the cost of federal health and retirement programs.

With less than a month before the “fiscal cliff” deadline, President Obama remains adamant about allowing tax rates to rise for the wealthiest 2 percent of taxpayers. Without such a deal, he is “absolutely” ready to go over the cliff, Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said Wednesday on CNBC.

Many GOP centrists and some conservatives are calling on House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) to concede on rates now, while he still has some leverage to demand something in return. Republicans are eager to win changes to fast-growing safety-net programs, such as raising the eligibility age for Medicare and applying a less-generous measure of inflation to Social Security benefits.

After Dec. 31, tax rates for most Americans, including the wealthy, are set to automatically rise, and this could cost Republicans a key bargaining chip in winning changes to entitlements.

“I and some others are advocating giving the president what he wants,” said Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (R-Ohio). But he stressed that this must be part of a package that slows federal borrowing and reduces the debt by $4 trillion to $5 trillion.

“Quite frankly, some people in this 2 percent who call me, they’re more worried about the fiscal cliff than about the rates going up a couple points. That has bigger risk for them,” said LaTourette, a close Boehner ally who is retiring in January.

You're a dumbazz on the subject Carol. Florida is a Republican controlled state, the Florida Department of ED has been headed by Republican appointees and the individual elected county school board members are "mostly" Republicans.

This state's public schools are still reeling from the Jeb Bush experience which is/was anything but progressive.

We've had these discussions previously Carol__I'm over wasting time trying to sort through your jibberish.

Jindal and the Balanced Budget Amendment

Jindal’s insistence on a balanced budget amendment makes the least sense of his first three proposals. He mentions that states have balanced budget laws, but he neglects to mention that it has been the cuts in state and local spending that have been a major drag on the recovery. He ignores that the reduction in public employment at the state and local level that these cuts required is one of the things that drove the unemployment rate so high. In the same op-ed, he insists that all actions taken by Washington should be viewed in terms of whether they help grow the economy, but then insists on pushing for a balanced budget amendment that would require the federal government to respond to economic contraction in the same way that the states have had to do for the last four years.

Thats the true problem in america & has been since the beginning. Ya'll think you are better than every other race of people & religion/culture. It's the american way to integrate, but to integrate you have to have equality & thats just not something you folks are willing to secede. As I stated in my earlier post, if this country falls it will be at the hands of the elite. Now I don't know if you are elite or not, but if you aren't you've been brainwashed! Because the black president doesn't follow in the steps of past presidents (whitemen) the world is coming to an end. Piyush is a gonner in national politics__he got by as a governor because of support from the feds on the oil spill and TS Isaac where all his ideas of barrier islands and bluster about water levels backfired.

He also blew it big time during the 2010 Republican response speech where he performed at eighth grade level. And the US is not ready for another brown guy with a funny name.

BTW, Mother Jones just put up a list of the dumbest things DeMint said.

You're just going to have to trust me on this one.
That is because the goals of the educational system are no longer serving our students, nor are our students serving the needs of business. If the goal is to prepare students for the world of work, we should be offering trade and living skills classes as a prerequisite to graduation, rather than attempting to prepare them for college degrees which most of them will not pursue. In fact, even if we ARE successful at getting kids to apply for college post-graduation, we are still not preparing them to be productive citizens. More than 80% of the subjects offered at the high school level, contain material which the average student will never use again once they graduate. This has to change.

It isn't a walk in the park, I'll tell you that. First off, there's no entertainment budget, grocery lists tend to be rather repetitious from week to week, and renting one's housing, rather than buying it, is pretty much a necessity, since without the means to pay for utilities, ad velorum taxes, and homeowners insurance, in addition to the mortgage payment, there's little point to taking out a mortgage. One also learns to 'do more with less' regarding one's wardrobe, and hopes like heck they never get really sick or have a catastrophic accident. Living from paycheck to paycheck is a real challenge.

One does what one must.

"Most believe zombies are relegated to the movies and video games, but Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn has highlighted the Department of Homeland Security’s participation in a staged “zombie apocalypse.”

According to Coburn’s most recent oversight report “Safety at Any Price: Assessing the Impact of Homeland Security Spending in U.S. Cities,” first responders were approved grant funds for a $1,000 entry fee to a week-long HALO Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego where the “marquee” event was a demonstration of a “zombie apocalypse.”

“[Strategic Operations] performed two shows on Halloween, which featured 40 actors dressed as zombies getting gunned down by a military tactical unit. Conference attendees were invited to watch the shows as part of their education in emergency response training.[HALO president Brad] Barker explained that,‘the idea is to challenge authorities as they respond to extreme medical situations where people become crazed and violent, creating widespread fear and disorder,’” the report reads.

Coburn was not pleased by the event or much of the waste detailed in his report."
