When Fox News chief Roger Ailes sent one of his national security correspondents to interview then-General David Petraeus in 2011, chances are he didn’t want the full conversation to ever see the light of day — because if it did, the network’s claim of being “fair and balanced” could be forever buried.

As it happened, someone was recording. The Washington Post revealed Monday that Ailes had contributor K.T. Mcfarland deliver a message to Petraeus directly: run for president as a Republican and News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch will bankroll you

The Republican push to make it more difficult to vote this year — seen by many as a racially tinged attempt to keep Democratic turnout down — could not have failed more spectacularly, a top African American activist told a left-leaning think tank Tuesday.

Chanelle Hardy, a vice president at the National Urban League, told an audience at the Center For American Progress in Washington that, as conservatives had suspected, there was a drop-off in enthusiasm among the African American electorate between 2008 and 2012. Republicans based a lot of their strategy on enthusiasm dips like these, assuming that Obama wouldn’t be able to maintain the same level of minority turnout he had enjoyed in 2008.

Unfortunately for those Republican strategists’ plans, however, other Republicans in legislatures across the country were on a quest to impose restrictions on voting, chasing the ghost of in-person voter fraud.

Those Republican legislators flipped a switch with the African American vote, Hardy said, rekindling whatever enthusiasm had waned after 2008’s historic Obama win.

“We’d been struggling for many years in our communities with how we make the argument that our parents and grandparents had handed down to us:‘you must vote, because people fought and died for you to have the right to vote.’ It starts to become a little less motivating the further away you get away from those really visceral memories of what it took to get to the polls,” Hardy said.“But then you bring back a 35 state assault on our ability to vote and it starts getting really reminiscent. All of the things our parents were telling us and our grandparents were telling us become visceral to a new generation.”

What do you mean you've made no political statements? You said Barack Obama is the antichrist, the antichrist is said to be a political figure. Being president is a political position! What are you talking about?

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) may be one of the foremost tea party champions, but a poll out Wednesday indicates that the overwhelming majority of voters in his state do not identify with the conservative movement.

The poll, from Winthrop University, shows that nearly 91 percent of registered voters in South Carolina do not consider themselves members of the tea party. About 6 percent of Palmetto State voters said they are a part of the movement.

The cover of Tuesday's New York Post — which shows a man moments before he was fatally struck by a subway train —is sparking outrage from readers.
Han, a 58 year old father from Queens, was pushed into the subway tracks by "a deranged woman" on Monday afternoon. One witness said that he was caught between the platform and the train, and dragged. The front page of the Post showed Han trying to lift himself back onto the platform at the 49th Street station as a Q train approached.

A judge blocked plans to privatize health care services in three of Florida’s four prison system regions, but the state said it would appeal.

By Mary Ellen Klas

Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau

TALLAHASSEE -- For the second time in over a year, a state judge has ruled that the Florida Legislature violated the law when it tried to privatize the state’s role in operating prisons.

Leon County Circuit Court Judge John Cooper on Tuesday struck down an attempt by the Florida Legislature to privatize prison health care by using a budgetary process instead of making the change through a full vote of lawmakers.

Gov. Rick Scott and the Department of Corrections said they will appeal the ruling, warning that the state now faces a $90 million deficit because they had counted saving that much over the next two years by having private contractors provide prison health care.
