If you’re out of practice at applying your ideas to real life, you’re message will hold little weight in the eyes of others. This is something for the GOP to remember if they aim to repair the divorce they’ve had with the working class. As reflected by last week’s exit polls, it’s going to require more than empathy, theory, or dressing up the party line, much to the talking heads’ dismay.

New taxes under Obamacare:
A 3.8% surtax on dividends. Taxes on dividends will rise from 15% to 43.8%.
A 0.9% surtax on Medicare taxes - 1.45% to 2.35%.
Flexible Spending Account contributions will be capped at $2,500. If you have been socking away $10,000 in your FSA to pay medical bills, you'll have to cut that to $2,500.
The itemized-deduction for medical expenses is going up to 10% of adjusted gross income.
The penalty on non-medical withdrawals from Healthcare Savings Accounts is now 20% instead of 10%.
A tax of 10% on indoor tanning services. This has been in place for two years.
A 40% tax on "Cadillac Health Care Plans" starting in 2018. If your employer pays for all or most of your healthcare plan, you will have to pay a 40% tax on the amount your employer pays.
(The 2018 start date is said to have been a gift to unions which often have comprehensive plans.)
A "Medicine Cabinet Tax" eliminates the ability to pay for over-the-counter medicines from a pre-tax Flexible Spending Account started in January 2011.
A "penalty" tax for those who don't buy health insurance. This will phase in from 2014-2016. It will range from $695 per person to about $4,700 per person depending on your income.
A tax on medical devices costing more than $100. Starting in 2013, medical device manufacturers will have to pay a 2.3% excise tax on medical equipment. This is expected to raise the cost of medical procedures.
The big ones--the 3.8% investment income hike and the Medicare tax increase--only hit you if you're making more than $200,000 a year. The rest hit you no matter how much you're making.

The Party’s Problem
The perception that the Republican party serves the interests only of the rich underlies all the demographic weaknesses that get discussed in narrower terms. Hispanics do not vote for the Democrats solely because of immigration. Many of them are poor and lack health insurance, and they hear nothing from the Republicans but a lot from the Democrats about bettering their situation. Young people, too, are economically insecure, especially these days. If Republicans found a way to apply conservative principles in ways that offered tangible benefits to most voters and then talked about this agenda in those terms, they would improve their standing among all of these groups while also increasing their appeal to white working-class voters. For that matter, higher-income voters would prefer candidates who seem practical and solution-oriented. Better “communications skills,” that perennial item on the wish list of losing parties, will achieve little if the party does not have an appealing agenda to communicate.

Rich Idiots and the Republican Gigolos
Here’s the simple fact — pretty much every major consultant in the GOP got into technology and the web, learned the buzz words, and went off to the rich idiots for funding. The outside 501(c)(4) groups didn’t want to end up out of money, so they redoubled their efforts and did the same. The donors shelled out. They had no understanding of what they were doing, had no capacity for the metrics to judge success, and would up spending much with nothing to show for it.
There is a better way. The rich idiots do not have to be idiots. They do not have to be played for sugar daddies by Republican consultants turned gigolos. The problem is, much of the current consulting class that has turned to tech is a problem. And many of the people out there right now most vocal about how to “fix” things are as much a part of the problem as the other guys.
If the wise men who made lots of money by being very smart in business keep going the way they are going, they’ll continue being the rich idiots of the Republican Party who continue to get played by the same guys who talk the talk they are comfortable with, walk the walk they are comfortable with, but actually do not understand and cannot really implement technology as a means to a ground game end.
That’s just the truth and yeah, it probably hurts today.

As has been addressed in detail by many of the editors here at RedState the usual suspects have gleefully sounded the call for a purge of social conservatism, as they always do, as a political, cultural and structural solution for all that ills the GOP. Those rushing to the media to make these pronouncements are acting like frightened children lost in the woods, an unsurprising development considering the immaturity of thought found in the consultant class.
This isn’t to say that the GOP is doing all that much right, in fact I am drawing a blank attempting to think of something for which to give them praise this cycle.
I don’t believe our answers lie in the GOP any more. As a friend said to me, parties exist to win elections, if they aren’t doing that what is the purpose?

Obamacare will affect small businesses in at least four ways.
1. Higher Health Care Costs. The endless regulations, mandates, fees and taxes will put upward pressure on premium prices where 88% of workers and dependents at small businesses purchase health insurance.
2. Ineffective Small Business Tax Credit. Obamacare does not address the uncertainties small businesses face in deciding whether to offer health insurance coverage to its workers.
3. Higher Regulation Compliance Costs. Many small companies will have to hire additional workers and incur external accounting expenses to handle the enhanced compliance regulations on health insurance plans and stricter tax compliance regulations.
4. Medicare Taxes on “Flow-Through” and Investment Income. Obamacare will establish a new Medicare non-payroll tax reaching a significant share of small businesses.
This tax increase is not indexed to inflation and will push more small business owners into a higher tax group. It will also lead to greater deterrence on investment and passive income which will suppress economic growth.
Obamacare fails to appropriately address the concerns of small and medium-size businesses. It will force many companies to react to new cost burdens. The intended consequences of this poorly constructed bill are harmful enough, but the many unintended consequences are even worse.
It's after the fact, but we should at least educate ourselves about what we face in the future.

Five Ways Obamacare Crushes the Middle Class
1. More taxes. Obamacare imposes $502 billion of new or increased taxes and fees. Several of the taxes will be passed on to middle-income families through higher prices.
The Medicare payroll tax from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent for individuals earning above $200,000 isn't indexed to inflation and will impact more middle-class families each year. A Medicare trustee report states,“By the end of the long-range projection period, an estimated 80 percent of workers would pay the higher tax rate.”
2. Loss of existing coverage. As many as 35 million people could lose their existing coverage because of the financial incentives for employers to drop coverage for their employees.
3. Higher premiums. For a family of four, premiums on even the lower priced ‘silver’ option could still cost more than $15,000 annually on the exchanges. A family’s income might exclude them from subsidies but not be high enough to pay $15,000 for Obamacare’s government-approved insurance. A family of four earning $90,000 annually could find themselves spending as much as 25 percent of the family’s take home pay for an average policy.
4. Rising health care costs. As costs rise, middle-class families including those receiving a subsidy will be left paying more. Charles Blahous, a Medicare trustee, concludes “this limitation would likely cause the federal subsidies to grow less rapidly over the long term than the cost of health care and thus require low-income individuals in the exchanges to shoulder a steadily increasing percentage of their health costs.”
5. More government control of health care. Obamacare transfers massive authority to the government in delivering care and coverage. This huge expansion of government’s role in health means that, by 2020, more than half of all Americans will be dependent on the federal government for health care and government bureaucrats will be in charge of deciding what you can and cannot buy.
(Guess I'm in educating mode today.)

Can you find any good news relating to Obamacare? I mean, about it not costing businesses and the middle class paying for it?

At the CNN debate this October in Las Vegas, Gingrich took a swipe at Romney over the former Massachusetts governor’s healthcare plan that requires citizens in the Bay State to buy health insurance. Romney shot back:“Newt, we got the idea of individual mandate from you.”
Gingrich responded:“You did not get that from me. You got that from the Heritage Foundation.”
They are both correct on this revealing point. The Heritage Foundation, the influential conservative think tank, first developed the idea of an individual mandate for healthcare in the late 1980s. That is how deeply this idea is tied to conservative thinkers.
Romney used the Heritage policy in developing his Massachusetts health care law. That reform contained the dreaded individual mandate.
And Gingrich supported the federal mandate as an alternative to Hillary Clinton’s health care reform package when he was Speaker in the 1990s.
If Republican voters heard Gingrich and Romney speak honestly about health care reform — and why they came to appreciate and support the good of the individual mandate — my bet is that most GOP and independent voters would be more impressed than they are with the blatant lies now being told on the campaign trail.

Carol you just keep right on with the right wing distortions that necessarily have to be presented by the outfit that thought the whole deal up in the first place but who would have something completely different to say if the healthcare law had been implemented by a Republican.
but it is good for a giggle or 2.

Same points were made when Medicare was enacted. You Repubs hate that universal health care plan for seniors as well. But I have NEVER known of a Repub 65 or older that pays their medical bills out of their own pocket in protest of the Socialist Plan. Hypocrites one and all.

I had more faith in the intelligence of the American public than I should have. I figured that there was absolutely no way the majority of the voters would ignore the fact that Lord Obama is second only to Jimmy Carter in his handling of the economy. The numbers don't lie-- look at the unemployment rate, the debt, on and on and on.
I thought the majority wouldn't ignore his embarassing behavior with foreign affairs, standing up the Israeli prime minister, the Benghazi debacle.
I thought people would look at his infatuation with movie stars, rap singers, etc. partying at the White House, Moochelle flying 60 of her closest friends on our dime to Spain for a week of frolick in the sand and be a bit annoyed.
But I was wrong. The majority, like you, are in it for the free stuff. Women were convinced to vote for him so they could get free (paid for by an Evil Rich Guy) birth control pills and save $9/month. Families everywhere were bought with free (paid for by an Evil Rich Guy) school breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Let the party continue.
It's really rather pathetic. What will it take to persuade you parasites that WORKING IS GOOD. I guess when the last Evil Rich Guy is tapped out, the well runs dry, and the Free Stuff isn't available, you'll burn tires in the street and whine like they do in Greece, Spain and elsewhere.
Whatever happens, you own it. In four more years the unemployment rate is still around 10% and the debt is in the tens of trillions, YOU VOTED FOR IT.
