Right-wing ‘Swift-boat’ smear fizzles

Obama should have been destroyed by now. That was the plan.

He was going to be “Swift-boated” in this election, just like John Kerry was in 2004.

It would be about Benghazi, where on Sept. 11 of this year, U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed. This would be the spear point that would fatally wound the Obama campaign.

It would be a classic smear: The Obama administration had delivered a “stand down” order to potential rescuers, and so four Americans had died.

Why would any agency or anybody in the administration do such a thing? It didn’t matter. Wingnuts can always find motives. There are still people who say Bill Clinton murdered Vince Foster. Whole books have been written about that one.

There are legitimate questions to be answered about what happened at Benghazi. There always are questions after such tragedies. Warnings were ignored by the George W. Bush administration before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, after all.

Were warnings ignored in Libya? Hindsight will probably find some.

And Stevens would hardly have ventured to Benghazi with inadequate protection if he thought there were legitimate warnings not to do so.

So a different narrative, a different point of attack, would have to be found for Benghazi.

On Oct. 26, Fox News reported that urgent requests for military backup during the attacks in Benghazi “was denied by officials in the CIA chain of command — who also told the CIA operators twice to ‘stand down’ rather than help the ambassador’s team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.”

The CIA and State Department denied it, but “stand down” would become the rallying cry for the far right.

It not only appeared everywhere on social media, but on Friday, as Obama was on his way to a rally at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hilliard, Ohio, it “passed small groups of onlookers, including a slightly larger cluster holding signs related to Benghazi, such as:‘We won’t stand down ... Benghazi,’ and,‘What are you hiding?’” according to the White House press pool report.

But Benghazi has proven to be not dynamite, but a firecracker. The October surprise has not turned into a bombshell. Instead, it has bombed.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/otherviews/16111...

David Ignatius, the highly respected columnist and associate editor of the Washington Post, who had been vigorous in demanding more information about Benghazi, wrote online Thursday,“While there were multiple errors that led to the final tragedy, there’s no evidence that the White House or CIA leadership deliberately delayed or impeded rescue efforts.”

THIS IS WHY OBAMA WINS IN FLOIDA...

ST. PETERSBURG --
Today is the final day for early voting in Tuesday's general election, and long lines are forming across Florida.

Some sites are reporting a wait time of up to four hours in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, while locations in Hillsborough and Duval counties are reporting between 15 minutes to about an hour.

Despite record turnout in many parts of the state, Florida Gov. Rick Scott rejected calls to extend early voting through Sunday to help alleviate long lines at the polls.

That call was renewed Saturday by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat who is running for reelection against Rep. Connie Mack IV.

A news release from Nelson's campaign said the early voting process "has been plagued by long lines and a lack of adequate polling space that's resulting in an untold number of voters bring turned away or becoming too discouraged to vote."

“You should be doing everything in (your) power to make sure everybody has the chance to vote, and that their vote is counted,” Nelson said in a letter to Scott.“Instead, Gov. Scott, you are allowing people to be turned away and jeopardizing the credibility of Florida’s election.”

About 25 million people have already voted in 34 states and the District of Columbia, either by mail or in person. About three million voters have cast their ballots in Florida.

Those wishing to avoid potential long lines at the polls Tuesday have until 7 p.m. today to vote in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Polk, Pasco and Citrus counties. In Hernando County, voting sites close at 4:30 p.m.

Voters must bring identification and vote in the county in which they are registered. Those in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Some Democrats and Democratic-leaning groups pushed for early voting to continue through Sunday, but Gov. Rick Scott said no. So voting sites will be closed on Sunday and Monday, and the polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

He should be charged with criminal negligence.
He tried to convince us that terrorists were on the run.

Probably wouldn't look good if he had to admit a terror attack on the anniversary of 9/11 when everything was hunky-dory in Libya.

Best to cover it up until after the election.

It's slipped through the cracks, but Rupert Murdoch just told the world what the world has already long known.

Today, Mr. Murdoch sent out a tweet about Chris Christie's praise of President Obama's efforts during the recent hurricane crisis. Yes, okay, the tweet itself did get attention.

Fair enough. Everyone has figured pretty easily that the Romney campaign and Republicans in general are sort of pissed off at Gov. Christie [R-NJ] for being honest in praising someone for doing a good job at a time of crisis.

But look closer at what Mr. Murdoch wrote. That part at the end. Take a look at it:

"Christie, while thanking O, must re-declare for Romney, or take blame for next four dire years."

Yes, okay, again, I know, its what you expect him to say. So, big deal. Except... no, it's not what you expect him to say. Because he's never before said it.

Keep in mind that Rupert Murdoch is the owner of Fox News. And yes, while not everyone considers Fox News to be an actual news organization, Fox News itself likes to contend publicly and vociferously that it is. That it's "Fair and Balanced." That it merely reports the facts and lets you decide.

Real journalists. Fair. Balanced. Unbiased. Impartial.

But now, the guy who heads all that just told you, publicly, that he believes anyone who helps the Democrat has to take the "blame for next four dire years."

Now, no matter how much you may or may not agree with that assessment of the next four years -- do you think that statement is unbiased? Presuming you're unbiased enough to be fair and balanced about it, of course.

Consider for a moment if the owner of CBS, NBC or ABC wrote something similar about Mitt Romney. That they said if some Democrats was helping the Republican nominee, "Must re-declare for Obama, or take blame for next four dire years."

There would be howls so loud you could hear them in the Cayman Islands.

And you know, they'd be right.

O'Reilly Denies Fox's History Of Slandering Obama On Benghazi
On his Fox News show, Bill O'Reilly declared that no one "here" has ever called President Obama a murderer or liar over his handling of the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya. But several Fox figures have accused Obama of purposely allowing Americans to die in Benghazi, and just last week, O'Reilly himself questioned a fellow Fox News host about having labeled the president a liar on Libya.
O'Reilly addressed the issue on his Friday show when guest Geraldo Rivera told him that President Obama deserves an apology for the way he's been treated in the press following the Benghazi attack. Rivera stated, "The president of the United States has been absolutely slandered over this story. He's been called a murderer and a liar." O'Reilly then interjected: "OK. But not by anybody here, and not by rational people."

Guess it depends on your definition of slander. Some call it truth seeking and holding those repsonsible accountable.

Criticizing Administration Policy Is Legitimate and Absolutely Necessary, Lying About It Isn’t

The main problem with Romney’s intervention Tuesday night and yesterday morning was that his entire criticism of the administration’s response to the attacks was thoroughly dishonest. This wasn’t a matter of having a different, more skeptical interpretation of something that happened. This was a case of accusing the administration of something (i.e., sympathizing with embassy attackers) that it plainly had not done and wasn’t about to do. It would have been perfectly legitimate and even useful for Romney to ask what the administration intended to do next, question what the security arrangements in Benghazi had been, and insist on accountability for any mistakes. Instead of offering anything remotely resembling constructive criticism, Romney immediately launched a false attack intended to link his opponent with people responsible for assaulting U.S. diplomatic missions.

Criticism of administration policy by a presidential challenger and his party is both legitimate and necessary. It’s a shame that Romney chose to abuse that responsibility. He has not only further discredited himself, but he has also made it that much harder to hold the administration accountable for any real mistakes or failures they might have made.
