But relief appeared to be on the way, even as the lines grew Thursday.******The Environmental Protection Agency lifted requirements****** for low-smog gasoline, allowing deliveries of gasoline from other regions. Tanker trucks sped north from terminals in Baltimore and other points south with fuel.

A big delivery of fuel was on its way south to Boston from a ******Canadian refinery. Ports and terminals remained open in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania, and portions of the Colonial and Buckeye pipelines are expected to re-open on Friday.***** Kinder Morgan Energy Partners expects to open its three terminals in New Jersey and New York over the next two days after bringing in backup generators.

Everyone from former Vice President Al Gore to Gov. Cuomo has chimed in to blame climate change for Sandy. But calling a single, rogue superstorm “the new norm” is misleading, if not downright naïve.

Extreme weather events have plagued mankind for all of recorded history. We have records of massive hurricanes striking what’s now New York as far back as the mid-13th century. The New England Hurricane of 1938 killed more than 700 people — 60 in New York alone. Hurricane Edna, in 1954, killed 29 and caused massive damage. Catastrophic hurricanes also hit in 1821 and 1894.

Yes, Sandy was the second tropical storm to impact New York in as many years, after Irene last August. But these storms don’t even start to compare with the frequency of tropical storms that threatened New York in the mid-1950s.

In 1955, two hurricanes — Connie and Diane — struck in the same month, causing significant flooding in the city. And the frequency of tropical storms to make landfall at or near NYC in the 2000s wasn’t as great as in the 1990s. New norm?

In New England, category five hurricanes — top of the line on the Saffir-Simpson scale — struck in 1938 (New England Hurricane) and 1960 (Donna). Category four storms struck in 1944 (Great Atlantic Hurricane), 1961 (Esther), 1985 (Gloria) and 1999 (Floyd). Category three storms struck in 1954 (Carol and Edna), 1955 (Diane), 1966 (Alma), 1976 (Belle), 1991 (Bob) and 1996 (Bertha).

On average, a major hurricane made landfall in New England every 3.5 years from 1938 to 1966. Since 1966, it’s been just every 9.2 years — with none since 1999. New norm?

That list spells out what Williams and Cantore conveniently ignored: Tropical storms were more frequent in the 1950s than at any previous point in the 20th century or at any point since. In fact, 10 major hurricanes struck the East Coast between North Carolina and New England from 1954 to 1960.

As hurricane expert Judith Curry of Georgia Tech points out on her Web site, and as meteorologist Joe Bastardi echoed in a Fox News interview, ocean temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere are now in the same cycle as in the 1950s.

The Atlantic is going through its warm cycle while the Pacific is going through its cold cycle — a perfectly normal pattern in the oceans’ ebb and flow between warm and cool anomalies. The El Nino Southern Oscillation, a measure of warming and cooling in the tropical Pacific known as El Nino and La Nina, also matches the pattern in the ’50s.

As evidenced by the 1950s, this pattern tends to steer large tropical storms toward the eastern seaboard.

In other words, it has everything to do with a natural cycle of Mother Nature and nothing to do with global warming.

Seven years ago, we were told that Katrina’s devastatation of New Orleans was just the beginning. But Mother Nature didn’t play along; the Atlantic Basin experienced unusually quiet hurricane seasons for the better part of a decade.

Just as there is a “Murdoch discount” for News Corp. shares, on account of Murdoch’s buccaneer approach to business morality, so there is a “Murdoch discount” attached to Fox News reports. Its “Fair and Balanced” motto has long been an LOL line among journalists worldwide, but in the case of the Benghazi attacks, Fox News’s reputation for misconstruing facts and waging poisonous ad hominem smears has counted against what began as a legitimate journalistic impulse — to discover why administration statements were so clearly at odds with what took place. What is more, Fox failed to uncover anything startling to persuade other news organizations to follow their lead.

But suspicion of Fox’s motives is not the whole story. Romney has failed to convince voters that the Benghazi killings reflect badly on the president. At first he jumped the gun, wrongly accusing the U.S. embassy in Cairo of blaming the Benghazi attack on the anti-Muslim video when their statement attempting to ameliorate anger at the video was issued six hours before the lethal attack. Having been accused of making the deaths of Americans in the line of duty a partisan issue, Romney was inhibited from returning to the subject until the second debate. His inadequate grasp of the facts then led him to first accuse the president of misleading America, then recoil when it was plain he was not familiar with the president’s use of the term “act of terror” in his Rose Garden statement on Sept. 12. Obama’s invitation to “Please proceed, Governor” should have tipped off Romney that his intended coup de grace would soon become a coup de folie.

I read the article you referenced abpve. Loved the last paragraph. How do two politicians flying around in a helicopter getting their pictures taken help people? Where IS FEMA and all that "gubment" help? Some places look just as bad as Katrina did. People waiting to be rescued from high water...now HOW many days after the storm hit? People complaining of no food and the lines for a little bit of gasoline...Exactly what is FEMA's response? Where are their food trucks distributing food and clean water? And Bloomberg...that liberal-minded government control freak...using huge generators to power up tents for a damn marathon when gas stations can't pump gas to people who need it because of no electric.

Sorry...you guys are not looking that great yet either.

Nonunion Ala. crews turned away from Sandy recovery

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY (WAFF)-
The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews learned they'll be doing work in Long Island, New York instead of in New Jersey.
Crews from Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees.
The crews that are in Roanoke, Virginia say they are just watching and waiting even though they originally received a call asking for help from Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
The crews were told to stand down. In fact, Moore said the crew from Trinity is already headed back home.
Understandably, Moore said they're frustrated being told "thanks, but no thanks."
Huntsville Utilities said they were not turned away and are up in storm ravaged areas working.
AH, but unions are great, right? Especially when it comes to democratic campaign donations.

Nonsense. Dem control of congress in 2007 sent the economy into recession with high gas prices and collapsed the financial sector with sub prime loans blackmailed from bankers. The Kenyan's communist coup has made things worse.
