4 Pinocchios for Mitt Romney’s misleading ad on Chrysler and China

When a campaign does not announce a television ad, it’s a good sign that it knows it is playing fast and loose with the truth. Indeed, this is an excellent example of an ad that has a series of statements that individually might be factually defensible, but the overall impression is misleading.

The ad also comes on the heels of Mitt Romney’s mistaken claim in a speech last week that Chrysler was moving Jeep production to China — a statement immediately denied by the auto manufacturer. Yet the story apparently was too good for Romney to give up, because the ad repeats the claim, tweaked slightly to make it more accurate.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-chec...

Indeed, while the ad cites the conservative Detroit News in supporting Romney for president, the editorial largely comes to same conclusion as this column regarding the viability of Romney’s plan for the auto industry in the midst of the Great Recession. The newspaper said Obama’s response to the auto industry crisis was “extraordinary” and an example of his “leadership on this issue:”

As I recall, the Arabs provoked that war by murdering 3000 Americans in the United States.
... correct me if that is wrong.

And, you're defending the position that Obama shouldn't be involved in any government function he doesn't have profissional experience with?
I suppose managing the Department of Community Organizing takes up all his time.

He's the president. He's the top authority. His responsibility is to make the decisions.
Perhaps, because he doesn't have any experience at anything in his entire life, the best thing is for that chair to be empty.

We're going to introduce some change to that situation very soon.

Obviously, it wasn't Obama.

Romney makes a good show of cans that won't do a thing for disaster relief

This is posturing, plain and simple, not actual help. According to the Red Cross:

Unfortunately, due to logistical constraints the Red Cross does not accept or solicit individual donations or collections of items. Items such as collected food, used clothing and shoes must be sorted, cleaned, repackaged and transported which impedes the valuable resources of money, time, and personnel.

The Red Cross does accept bulk quantities of product and services when these items meet our service delivery needs. These donations typically come from manufacturers, suppliers, and/or distributors that can package the items in bulk, palletize them and transport them directly to Red Cross sites. Financial contributions allow the Red Cross to purchase exactly what is needed for a disaster relief operation. Monetary donations also enable the Red Cross to purchase relief supplies close to the disaster site which avoids delays and transportation costs in getting basic necessities to disaster victims. Because the affected community has generally experienced significant economic loss, purchasing relief supplies in or close to the disaster site also helps to stimulate the weakened local economy.

Romney is, like President Barack Obama, linking a Red Cross donations page on his website. But he's more actively touting this counterproductive faux relief effort, at the same time he attempts to disguise that in a Romney presidency, people facing disaster wouldn't have much else to rely on after he cut emergency response funding.

But here's a thought: The Romney campaign could use this photo op to rectify the damage done by a previous photo op and actually help those in need by donating the supplies to the soup kitchen targeted by angry Republicans after its director said Paul Ryan had "ramrodded" his way in to do a photo op washing clean dishes there.

Romney-Ryan and the Fallacy of Fiscally Conservative Republicans

So how has the GOP kept its reputation as the more fiscally responsible party? It's a triumph of rhetoric over results, and due in part to the fact that conservatives can anticipate the ways Democrats will disappoint them so much more clearly than they can anticipate Republican failures, which they underestimate.

George Will is more inured than most to this pathology. So as a testament to its power, note that the pessimistic conservative columnist has persuaded himself on the eve of Election 2012 that Mitt Romney will govern as a fiscal conservative, despite being the one who drew my attention to that quote about Republican presidents doing more than Democrats to expand entitlements.

"Why, then, should we expect Romney to reverse Republican complicity?" Will asks. "Because by embracing Paul Ryan, Romney embraced Ryan's emphasis on the entitlement state's moral as well as financial costs."

But the rhetoric of fiscal conservatism has always been embraced by the GOP!

Consider this:

Mitt Romney has personally "embraced" a lot of policies he later disclaims or abandons.

Math and common sense show he'll break at least some of his current promises.

The Republican Party has now run in successive elections against cutting Medicare.

Cutting entitlements is very unpopular, and Romney has showed very little political courage in his career.

Expanding entitlements is popular, and Romney is a serial panderer.

Answering all those factors by citing an embrace of Paul Ryan would be a lot more persuasive if Ryan himself hadn't amassed a record of opportunistically expanding entitlements when politically convenient.
