The Company Romney Keeps

The saying goes: A man is known by the company he keeps.

If that is true, what does the company Mitt Romney keeps say about him?

This week Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama again, as he did in 2008. That apparently set John Sununu, a co-chairman of the Romney campaign, on edge. Powell’s endorsement couldn’t possibly be the product of purposeful deliberation over the candidates’ policies. In Sununu’s world of racial reductionism, Powell’s endorsement had a more base explanation: it was a black thing.

On Thursday, Sununu said on CNN:“When you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to wonder whether that’s an endorsement based on issues or whether he’s got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama.” He continued:“I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.”

Talk about damning with faint praise. In other words, Sununu was basically saying that he was applauding Powell’s inability to see past the color of his own eyelids.

Sununu is the same man who said that the president performed poorly in the first debate because “he’s lazy and disengaged.” He is also the same man who said of the president in July,“I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”

Could Sununu be unaware that many would register such comments as coded racism? Or was that the intent?

.... Sununu has apologized, somewhat, for his racial attack on Powell’s motives. But what should we make of all this?

We have a very racially divided electorate. As The Washington Post reported Thursday,“Obama has a deficit of 23 percentage points, trailing Republican Mitt Romney 60 percent to 37 percent among whites, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national tracking poll.”

The report pointed out that nearly 80 percent of nonwhites support Obama, while 91 percent of Romney’s supporters are white.

I worry that Sununu’s statements intentionally go beyond recognizing racial disparities and seek to exploit them.

What does that say about Romney, and what does it say about his campaign’s tactics?

Remember: A man is known by the company he keeps.

That is another bald faced lie. Why do you liberals think that telling lies will sway public opinion towards your favor? I want to know why the president refused to send in help and why he failed to secure the embassy in the weeks leading up to 9/11. Those specific failures cost four dedicated Americans their lives, and I believe the American public needs to know exactly what the president was doing in the couple of hours the attack was being watched by the white house in "real time".

Besides, it’s not as if Powell’s endorsement comes as a surprise. On foreign policy alone, Romney has gone out of his way to make himself unacceptable to someone like Powell, and there are enough other disagreements on domestic policy that it would have always been a stretch for him to justify backing Romney. If he were going to endorse Romney, he presumably would have done so on foreign policy and national security grounds, and Romney’s campaign this year made it impossible for him to do that. Voters that would take Powell’s criticism of Romney’s foreign policy seriously have already reached a judgment about Romney’s readiness to be president, and I suspect the vast majority of them already reached the same conclusion Powell did.

The Dictatress of the World

Jonathan Bernstein ponders Romney’s “America has not dictated to other nations” statement:

When I heard that claim that the United States “has not dictated to other nations,” it sounded like a gaffe to me; so far, however, I’ve seen little criticism of it, and to my surprise Team Romney is treating it as a brilliant comeback – they’ve released an “apology tour” ad quoting from the debate, and Paul Ryan tweeted out the bit about “dictated” this morning.

I’m sure their campaign thinks it’s a brilliant line, because Romney has used some version of it for months. It went mostly unremarked at the time, but Romney said almost the exact same thing in his acceptance speech in Tampa:

President Obama began with an apology tour. America, he said, had dictated to other nations. No Mr. President, America has freed other nations from dictators.

The implication is that saying that “America has dictated to other nations” is the sort of thing one says on a so-called “apology tour.” Of course, the “apology tour” has been the central foreign policy lie of the Romney campaign. The claim that America hasn’t dictated to other nations is how Romney demonstrates that he repudiates the made-up “apology tour.” On one level, it can’t make sense because it is the rejection of something that never happened. It is also a window into how Romney thinks about the U.S. role in the world.

As far as I can tell, Romney doesn’t mean that the U.S. doesn’t or shouldn’t issue ultimatums to other states. Romney’s statements on foreign policy are filled with calls to issue challenges and demands to other governments. Dictating to other states is what Romney thinks the U.S. needs to be doing more often, except that he will call this “leading.” This makes up a large part of what Romney thinks international “leadership” is. He emphasizes the importance of “resolve” and “credibility” because he wants the public to believe that he is better-suited to making demands of other governments and backing up threats contained in U.S. ultimatums. So if Romney doesn’t believe that the U.S. doesn’t or shouldn’t dictate to other nations, what is he talking about?

Based on what he has said, we can conclude that Romney’s view is that U.S. policies overseas never involve the domination of other nations or the imposition of American priorities on unwilling people. It is a restatement of the ideological claim that the U.S. is a benevolent hegemon whose actions typically lead to the liberation of other nations. That this is a view significantly at odds with the historical record and our own recent experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other places, does not concern Romney or his campaign. It is a self-congratulatory affirmation of the good intentions of the U.S. government, and a determined refusal to acknowledge that U.S. policies abroad can be very destructive and driven by arrogant presumption. Acknowledging that the U.S. has been arrogant or heavy-handed in its dealings with other nations is not acceptable to Romney because it gets in the way of the story that he wants to tell about American “leadership.”

Has the Muslim Brotherhood Infiltrated the Romney Campaign?

Anti-Muslim activists on the Right have consistently warned that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated the Obama administration. But if their unhinged McCarthyism is to be believed, then Mitt Romney’s campaign has been penetrated by the Muslim Brotherhood as well, as Romney’s campaign has named George Salem, Samah Norquist and David Ramadan “National Co-Chairs of Arab Americans for Romney.”

Pamela Geller labeled George Salem’s Arab American Institute a “nototrious anti-Israel Israel [sic] organization” composed of “Islamic supremacists” and led by a “Jew hater.” She even suggested that the AAI seeks “Jewish annihilation” by backing Mideast peace efforts.

Geller, Frank Gaffney, Robert Spencer, William Murray, Andrea and James Lafferty and others sent a letter to Edwin Meese demanding he withdraw his endorsement of Virginia Del. David Ramadan because of his purported ties to Muammar Gadaffi and “radical views,” including his support for the right to build the Park 51 Islamic Community Center. James Lafferty said Ramadan is an “extremist” who should not even “be allowed to continue to live in the United States,” and Geller said he is a “stealth jihadist” and a “Muslim Brotherhood plant.”

Perhaps no chair of Romney’s committee is despised more than Samah Norquist, wife of conservative leader Grover Norquist. Glenn Beck and Jerry Boykin have said that Norquist is a lackey for the Muslim Brotherhood and according to anti-Muslim activists like Gaffney and David Horowitz, Norquist secretly converted to Islam and joined the Muslim Brotherhood at the behest of his wife. Conservative attorney Cleta Mitchell wrote in a report for the American Conservative Union that she is “certain that Mr. Gaffney’s hatred [for Norquist] is further fueled by the fact that Grover is married to a Muslim-American woman (who also has worked for the United States government in very responsible positions, I might add!).”

Of course, these spurious claims against Ramadan, Norquist and Salem are just as baseless and wrong as their attacks against the Obama administration and the Muslim-Americans serving in it.

But while extremists like Geller, Gaffney, Horowitz and others are quick to attack Obama with such bogus charges, for some reason it seems unlikely Romney will receive similar treatment.

Democrats don't bring up abortion. Republicans do.

Both in the federal & state governments, Republicans keep spending time not talking about our national security, not talking about the economy, not looking to create jobs, but trying to limit the availability of abortions.

If what you say was actually true, you should be railing against Republicans in Congress.

Why did Republicans do nothing to help us recover in 2009 & 2010.

Why did Republicans take control of the House only to pass bill after bill full of abortion related issues.

Why did Republicans waste time trying to defund Planned Parenthood.

You blame Democrats?

I have news, Democrats only point out how much time Republicans wasted trying to legislate your female parts. Not Democrats.

Republicans in states across this country spent time passing legislation to invade your body arts if you chose to have an abortion.

Republicans did that, not Democrats

Republicans sped time putting up bills that attempt to alter the definition of rape, not Democrats

Republicans try to pass a personhood bill that would make many forms of contraception illegal & in vitro fertilization techniques against the law.

Republicans did that, not Democrats.

They did this while doing nothing to help us recover, to create jobs.

Your post was just plain inane & uninformed.

GOP Rep: I ‘Absolutely’ Voted To Cut Funding For Embassy Security

O’BRIEN: Is it true that you voted to cut the funding for embassy security?

CHAFFETZ: Absolutely. Look, we have to make priorities and choices in this country. We have — think about this — 15,000 contractors in Iraq. We have more than 6,000 contractors, private army there for President Obama in Baghdad.

And we’re talking about can we get two dozen or so people into Libya to help protect our forces? When you’re in tough economic times, you have to make difficult choices how to prioritize this.
