Ex-deputy may replace Suffolk social services chief

Full story: Newsday

Just months after the legislature's former Presiding Officer Gregory Blass was named chief deputy of Suffolk Social Services in 2007, his new boss, Janet DeMarzo, moved him out to a building a mile away from the agency headquarters.

Social Services... Suffolk's most costly agency with a $550-million budget...

We need to stop the social agenda unfunded state and federal mandates that are destroying the fabric of our society.

The above quote says it all. When you have multiple degenerat-ions of people living on public assistance who have never held a job there is a problem.

550 million, that sure is a lot of your tax bill going to pay for the lazy system manipulators that sit around doing drugs and not taking care of their kids to boot.

Thank god the witch is almost dead, maybe Stevie can waste more tax $$ and place her in Consumer Affairs,Lord knows that place is sinking like a lead balloon. There is no enforcement and recent revenue has plummeted,98 percent of all Suffolk employees hate him due to the fact that he is a liar and manipulator. He was quoted in the New York Times... Mr. Levy said his intention is to improve morale throughout the county's 11,000-member work force.''When they see we are promoting based on merit, making the department more efficient, and professionalizing it, well, that's the best morale booster you can have,'' he said. Morale booster, what a joke, there is no morale left. the majority of employees are doing less and less. They don't trust him or his hacks and the only place promoting is Social Services where salaries are state funded.

Levy had maintained the hard-nosed DeMarzo, 52, is considered "a model commissioner" around the state, whose record includes ending the use of costly motels for the homeless. But critics say she often erupts in tirades, is unresponsive to nonprofit contractors and community groups, and once even hurled a chair in a meeting.

She saved us money by not wasting it on motels for the homeless. She is apparently not in bed with local contractors and she is independent of the NIMBY community groups. She demands accountability from her subordinates.
What's not to like??!! She sounds like the ideal government department head - the one the taxpayers deserve!! Keep her and get more like her! Finally a little bit of common sense in government - good work Steve!

DeMarzo grew up under some hard nosed bosses: Laure Nolan, DeMartini, Kopp and Apollaro. Apparently, she learned her lessons well. Unfortunately, she'll get booted from this job for a guy who hasn't had a real job his entire life. Now, he can kiss the butts of the legislators, which Janet refused to do.

It's about time - a lot of posters make comments on how she and other like her should be hired to save the taxpayers $$$ but before they make these comments they should have to work for an tirant like the wicked witch for 6 months. They will definitely be siging a different tune then.

If Dictaror Levy decides she should stay in DSS then maybe the new leadership can exile her to Siberia!

Obviously, Steve Levy must like DeMarzo's crazy behavior. Throwing temper tantrums, screaming profanities, and throwing chairs , etc. is not normal or acceptable behavior.

DSS is well shod of this lunatic.

Mr. Blass was instrumental in shutting down The Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant for no other reasons other than his self absorbed political salvation. We all can agree why the United States is constantly fighting wars none of us want, OIL. The dependency on OIL is the reason why Mr. Blass was willing to allow young men and woman to die in the Middle East. However, there has not been a signal person that has died in a Nuclear Power Plant Facility in the entire nuclear power programs history (Over 500 years). It’s OK however to create and perpetuate cancer clusters around the oil burning Northport, Glenwood landing and Port Jefferson Power Plants, and again allowing young men and woman die fighting to fill these power plants with Oil. That is quite a heavy load to live with and now the political machine is going to continue to reward Mr. Blass with the Commissioners position. If this appointment is indeed confirmed I will assure that every legislator that does vote for his appointment that I and my fellow likeminded friends and neighbors will be at every Public meeting and write on every available blog and send letters to the every local editor to ensure no one forgets the pain and suffering that Mr. Blass’s decision over 20 years ago has caused many families in Suffolk county. Mr. Blass is looking for a nice soft retirement landing but he shall be haunted with this for the rest of his life.

As a final thought, as crazy as it might sound, if people like Mr. Blass took a step from politics and allowed the Nuclear Power Industry to continue and grow to replace Oil Powered Plants perhaps 9/11 would not occurred?.

It truly is unconscionably

Right On!! We've seen DSS Commissioners who sit back and collect their fat salaries. Janet worker hard and demanded a lot from herself and others. Levy would be smart to keep her on in some capacity.

They are just going to switch positions. A slap in the face the the Legislature that forced her out. The Legislature to make Levy pay a price for backdooring them.

If Levy does this, I hope the Leg screws him royally on things he wants!

Anyone who thinks she is so wonderful should work for her for 1 week. Once they see her true colors they certainly will be signing a different tune.

I command Newsday for the portrayal of the factual chronology of the Shoreham Plant and the unfortunate actions of key politicians, most notably Gregory Blass, by creating public fear for no other purpose then selfish political gain. In particular what I find so abhorrent is that this man knew the energy crises that faced the country at the time, and continues to dog us to this day, and that he had also had full knowledge that young man and woman would continue to sacrifice their lives in the Middle East to protect our dependency of oil. The purpose of Shoreham, and every other Nuclear Power facility, is simple: to eliminate that foreign oil dependency safely. By shutting down Shoreham the bloodshed continued as the Industry stopped building plants as the financial risk was far too great as any hack politician could place a Utility in Financial ruin by the same political antics such as Gregory Blass contributed to. The end result for Gregory Blass was not for the good of the country and our children’s future it was for no other reason than securing political traction for a judgeship and to gain a nice civil service position such as he trying to do today as the recommended new Social Services Commissioner. To illustrate this point Gregory Blass states that “the iodine filters that were in the stacks were missing and there was no means to measure the actual release of contamination to the atmosphere” when in truth the iodine filters did not perform as designed because the charcoal filtering capacity was apparently partially expended prior to the accident. Required testing of filter effectiveness for the fuel handling building had been waived by the NRC. They weren’t “Missing” as Mr. Blass stated. Furthermore, as detailed studies of the radiological consequences of the accident had been conducted by the NRC, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now Health and Human Services), the Department of Energy, and the State of Pennsylvania. Several independent studies have also been conducted. Estimates are that the average dose to about 2 million people in the area was only about 1 millirem. To put this into context, exposure from a chest x ray is about 6 millirem. Compared to the natural radioactive background dose of about 100 125 millirem per year for the area, the collective dose to the community from the accident was very small. The maximum dose to a person at the site boundary would have been less than 100 millirem.
The long and short Gregory Blass sensationalized this point and his whole platform which he must be held accountable for. It is not right for a man to do what he did by contributing to the shutting down of the Shoreham plant which directly related to countless deaths associated with the cancer clusters surrounding Long Islands Oil burning plants. Let alone, If Shoreham were operating today I truly believe the Nuclear Power Industry would have expanded enough to lessen our insatiable appetite for foreign Oil, thereby no fighting in the middle east….perhaps no 9/11?...Mr. Blass it’s all on you, really think about, I and many of my likeminded friends and family do, every day
