I received my first (yes first) speeding ticket the day before I was to leave to travel overseas for a week long study abroad trip for my MBA program. Like the public relations consultant cited in the article, the next morning, I immediately went and obtained a state ID card. Although I had a passport, I was concerned that airlines or other organizations would require more than one form of ID.

I fully support eliminating the confiscation of driver's licenses.

Its about time. I always pay the cop right there in cash and he gives mine right back. Is that not right?

In most cases, If you have a AAA membership, you can offer your membership card as a bond.

I just refinanced my house. I almost could not close because my license was seized for driving 7 miles over the speed limit. I offered my AAA card which says is a bond card, but the officer said they no longer accepted that. It's a real pain to be without your license.

Taking your driver's license is completely outdated and stupid. Once the police officer has you're license number I really don't see the need to take your driver's license.

This was done before in the city were you could sign for a ticket. It was called a promise to comply. Guess what nobody showed up in court.

I love using my FOID when asked for a photo ID. A lot of people get a confused look on their face. A great thing to do in liberal Chicago.

"Wholesale changes to the law cannot be made without the approval of the state Supreme Court."

Why not? Is there something in the state constitution about this? If not, then why couldn't the legislature change the law?

A colleague was heading overseas for a business meeting in Eastern-Europe. He got stop'd off of the Kennedy enroute to O'Hare to catch his flight and was ticketed for making an improper turn near the long term parking facility at O'Hare. Although he could board his flight because he had his passport, at the airport in Europe the rental car company wouldn't give him the car he'd arranged for without a vaild driver's license. He had to hire a car and driver to get him out to the sticks where the company's facility was located. That single ride cost him nearly as much as his flight. Although one of the exec's from the company there lent him one of his family's cars for his stay, the bitter taste that was left in my colleague's mouth remains. He was found 'not guilty' of the offense in Chocago {because of inadequate posting in the construction zone}, but, it still cost him hundreds of dollars that the company/his employer refused to reimburse him for.
Confiscation of driver's license is antiquated and abusive - to say the least!

This really sucks for people who travel a lot. You can't rent a car without a driver's license--a ticket or state ID doesn't count.

I actually went and got a duplicate license and keep the second one at home just in case.

It's ridiculous...

What happens when RealID gets implemented? Will you be allowed to have a state ID and drivers licence?
In Ohio if you get a state ID it invalidates your drivers license.

Do airlines accept a ticket and another picture ID? I know bars do. but that was years ago.

what about getting away from the tickets altogether.. it is a scam to raise money especially when you get caught for changing lane without giving a signal on an almost empty road....

The practice should be eliminated completely, not used just in cases wjhere people cannot post the $75 bond. Every day around the State, people are released on I-bonds (signature bonds) for criminal offenses, many times even felonies. It makes no sense to not do the same for traffic tickets.

The article is inaccurate -- you ALWAYS have another option instead of surrendering your license: request that you be taken to the police station to post your bond.

YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE THIS RIGHT, DON'T BACK DOWN.

I have invoked this option twice, and both times I was let go with a warning -- apparently it is too much trouble for a cop on quota deadline ;)-- but I was prepared and willing to be taken in. NEVER, EVER SURRENDER YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE!

Here's a plan... Don't drive poorly, which will result in a ticket. And the police don't have to take your DL if you can present a Bond card from your insurance company. And if you do get a ticket, you should have a state ID anyway.... you can and should get one when you get your DL... they use the same picture, it costs and extra 10 bucks, but can save A LOT of stress if you lose you DL..... To recap, don't drive like a moreon. Do have more than 1 form of ID.

Yeah right, it's not any extra work for the cop to take you into the station. In fact, it's no big deal AT ALL. BTW, there is no quota.

Always a viable option, just go in and post bond OR get a bond card. This article is just shy of pointless.
