Stamford needs a nickname that works

If Stamford is serious about reinventing itself -- and it must be because it formed a committee to look into it -- its initial move is obvious. Full Story

Sounds like a city I should take a drive through to consider for potential move to the east coast. Can't do it till 2nd child is through High School AND if she doesn't remain in Michigan - but that means, at max, another 5.5 years.

Maybe we'll take a drive through during vacation this year to see what Stamford is all about.

We'll be looking for that slogan sign!

Traffic signals in Stamford are not timed and apparently not computerized. Attempted calls to Dept of traffic go unanswered. Turnpike is clogged 12+ hours a day, politicians offer NO solutions.

"Stamford, we don't care about the traffic"

Mr. McKeever and I are on the same page when it comes to the SPS; to business and developers; to housing; and the Palace.

Unfortunately, he's wrong about toxins and fires.
The disaster at United Organics, God knows what at Yale & Towne, the near miss at Elan Chemicals come to mind.
Then there's the as yet undocumented pre and post cleanup of coal tars and chemcals at Harbor Point.

Nonetheless, his call is for us to rise above what has been Stamford's most appropriate unofficial monicker in recent years, "The City that Smirks."

That one was coined by retired Recreation Superintendent Bob Neu, commenting on the blitzkreig approach to developing the new Mill River Park.

It could just as well have been applied to the haughty self-interest "gift" of improved riverfront by RBS, which unaccountably destroyed a good number of affordable downtown housing units in the process of creating a buffer zone for its new HQ.

He could also have thrown-in the recently suspended WPCA venture into a quixotic $40Million sludge gassification, absent any feasability, operational or fiscal analysis. No doubt, there will be attempts to revive it.

In all, an honest call for some efficient fair dealing above and beyond private benefit and self-interest. Carry on, sir. Carry on!

I never liked the slogan, but the Stamford I live in works pretty well. Lots of room for improvement, but all in all a very decent place to live.

But based on some of the stuff I see in these forums, maybe we could just tweak the old slogan, making it: The City of Quirks.
