Rob Zombie really hit the nail on the head with his tribute to Freebird at the end of Devil's Rejects. Great scene, Great song. It really kind of puts it in perspective. PLAY SOME SKYNYRD!

The Cryan Shames.... Greenberg Charles David Smith and Jooooones... had no idea what that song was about but I bought the 45 and loved it.
Head East... what was that song with the line "save my life I'm going down for the last time"? I was a painter years ago and my crew was working indoors one day when that song came on the radio. One of the guys sang along a little and when it got to that part he sang at the top of his lungs, "save my life I'm going down on a fat guy!" Everybody lost it. Painters spilled paint. Carpenters dropped hammers and even the surly electricians laughed out loud. That was maybe 25 years ago. I still can't listen to that song.
Chicago has always been vital to our music. In the blues tradition. Great folkies like Prine, Goodman and my friend Mike Smith (Spoon River, Hobo's Mandolin). Post Rock and indie with Thrill Jockey records, The Sea and Cake, Smashing Pumpkins, the great Wilco. I think a guy could spend his whole life just studying and writing about the music of that toddlin' town.
"Never Been Any Reason" is the song. Like REO Speedwagon, they are/were from the Champaign-Urbana area of Illinois which is a couple hours south of Chicago. It was HUGE when I was in college and I recall seeing them at the football stadium (for a couple bucks) with REO and Foghat. The album is "Flat as a Pancake". Lots of interesting local Chicago bands aside from the ones you've heard of. Milwaukee has produced many as well. The Bodeans had a couple hits with "She's a Runaway" and "Good Things".

Sometimes people forget that Chess Records was located here in Chicago. Even the music of LS can trace its roots here. The Stones recorded here as well. Too long of a story to tell but there's plenty to read on the Internet about Chess.

Man I've dug the BoDeans since at least the early 90's. My wife isn't as big a music fan as I am and she'd be perfectly happy if "Home" was the only album she had on a desert island. She loves that album. I think Kenny Aranoff might have provided the groove ultimate on one or two tracks on that. Great band. I keep missing them every time they come around.(Oh... you know what.. It was on the first Robbie Robertson solo album that I originally heard them nutty BoDeans.)
I listened to an album by Chicago's own Sea and Cake last night. Very nice.

Not much of the "new" stuff I like actually. Sea and Cake, Smashing Pumpkins.... they don't do all that much for me. But give me the Buckinghams, Cryan Shames, Styx, New Colony Six (Ronnie Rice is an aquaintance), Ides of March, Shadows of Knight, American Breed, Paul Butterfield, and does anyone besides me recall Aorta? Cheap Trick is from Rockford... about an hour west.

I likes my music like I likes my wimmins.... old AND young, it don't matter, they all have something goin' on.(I must confess that I don't like rap and I don't like most of the crap they call country these days. I love blues, Motown and Stax but I hate rap. I love Hank but Hank Jr is an idiot and his music is just as bad.)
Last year, my son and me saw the great Richard Thompson. A few weeks later we saw the indie band Cursive, followed shortly thereafter by the Icelandic band Sigur Ros, then Fogerty.... Rilo Kiley... It's odd, I listen to more music than my son does. He listens to a lot of blues and Americana.
American Breed.. the brief but spectacular drum solo on Bend Me Shape Me was cooler than Wipe Out.
Ides of March... I'm your vehicle baby... I seem to recall a tragic plane crash... is that the right band?
I recall the name Aorta and I seem to recall real heavy rock, a la Blue Cheer.
Paul Butterfield was more important than most people give him credit for. I think he kind of cut the template for psychedelic blues rock before Canned Heat or Zep. Charlie "Bugsy" Maugh was a bass player with Butterfield for a while. He lived down the block from me back in 1969 or so after he left the band. He taught bass, guitar and probably doobie twistin' to quite a few of the young guys in the neighborhood back then. Nice man.

The Ides "turned into" Survivor. Don't recall anything about a plane crash however. Love John Fogerty.... but how the F does a guy from northern CA sound like that when he sings?????? LOL Rap... a gorilla could do rap if you gave it a microphone I think.

Aorta was a Chicago band that had an incredible album back in the 60's. I have the vinyl and downloaded it to my hard drive... just Google "Aorta band" and see what you come up with. You will be totally amazed. It was produced by the father of a guy I went to HS with. Didn't know him... just went to HS with him.

Blue Cheer.... there is a cover of the old staple "The Hunter" (remember the Led Zeppelin bit?) by BC that is awesome. I suspect you could grab it from an FTP site. Worth the risk. LOL

I sometimes confuse Paul Butterfield with Electric Flag. Not sure why.

"I sometimes confuse Paul Butterfield with Electric Flag. Not sure why."
I think mike Bloomfield is the common link there. Not positive.
Survivor? Far out! I had no idea.
I think the horn band with the tragic crash was called Chase. Come to think of it.
I just checked out, http://therisingstorm.net/aorta-aorta/ ... the cover is exactly as I remembered it. The list of associated bands was amazing! Illinois Speed Press gave us paul Cotton. HP Lovecraft was just plain cool. The music sounds way more interesting than I remembered.
Wasn't Mason Proffit an Illinois band? I saw them once. An unknown band called the Doobie Brothers opened for 'em and had the crowd rockin' so hard that poor Mason Proffit never won 'em over. John Talbot actually swore at the crowd. Foul mouth for a monk.
Where's Poobah today? Must be out catching some fish along the big river.

Yep... MP was a Chicago band. And as I recall, my cousin who is a few years older, graduated HS in Arlington Heights IL with Ted Nugent. And let's not forget Aliotta, Haynes and Jeremiah who had a mostly local hit with a song called "Lake Shore Drive" about heading south into Chicago along the lakefront on one of the most beautiful drives in the country (IMHO).

Don't forget that Chicago is home to some of the worlds greatest architecture and some world class museums.
If all Chicago ever produced was Studs Terkel that'd be a job well done.
We've been talking about taking the train to Chicago and staying someplace nice downtown and spending a few days sightseeing, going to museums, maybe a show or two and see what them big city record stores are like. I'd even take a jacket and tie, so's we could get some real fancy, epicurean victuals.

Just remember, don't go west or south of downtown. LOL And our pizza alone is worth the trip! And NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, puts ketchup on a hot dog!

Ketchup? I vaguely remember that stuff. I haven't used it since Bonanza was still on Sunday nights and sponsored by Chevrolet. My dad was a race car driving man o' the world and he made sure I ate the way the locals ate. Wherever or whatever that meant.
It's a useful discipline. We lived overseas when our kids were young and they were really cool about trying all the local grub. We were on an island in Micronesia so that included things like fruit bat and venison sashimi. It was weird but they did great. Better than me sometimes.

I have a friend who still yells this at concerts. Every time he does it I can't help but shake my head and pretend I don't know him.

Good idea. It's ok to yell at sporting events though.
