University of Chicago to shutter women's clinic

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Every year, a storefront clinic operated on the South Side by the University of Chicago Medical Center cares for thousands of women on public aid, many of whom have serious conditions and few options.

It;s beyond reprehensible. It's utterly shameful. The dental clinic issus is especially troubling. There are so few outlets for the poor to receive proper dental care, which can prevent numreous other ailments from developing, and that clinic's charitible endowment has "tens of millions" sitting in the bank! How can they close such a thing when the endowment is flush with cash?
First U of C tries to move uninsured people out of its ER and into clinics for cost savings, which I can totally understand. But NOW it's closing its own few clinics and truly dumping those people into the laps of other centers. Well if U of C can't put up a few dollars for these people, who the hell can!
An absolute disgrace on our city and our country. I have insurance for the time being, thank Gd. U of C will never see a dime of it!
Universal healthcare for America NOW!
You cannot expect citizens and coorporations to be taxed at a higher rate to fund Universal Healthcare and expect them to offer free services as well. I would prefer to not rely on the government to manage healthcare-management of the US Senate cafeteria has been taken over by a private company because the government could not effectively run it. If the government cannot manage a small cafeteria how can we expect them to run a national health system?

You should learn more about US health care systems and less about analogizing to cafeteria management privatization programs.

The fact is that the Federal government runs Medicare extremely efficiently compared to what the private insurers are able. Of every dollar collected, Medicare spends 1-2 cents on overhead expenses. The rest goes straight to the payment of medical care for patients. So 98% goes to paying for actual health care. Private insurance carrers, like Blue Cross, Aetna, Humana, etc., on the other hand, spend 25-35% on overhead costs like advertising, underwriting, CEO bonuses, claims processing, etc. Only 65-75 cents per premium dollar is actually available to pay medical claims. Not to mention the for-profit insurers paying out stockholder dividiends to their investors. So no, you are wrong. There are certain things the government, by its mere scale and inherent efficiencies, is able to accomplish far more efficiently and for less cost than a few private insurance companies could ever do.

And regarding taxation, we are talking about the here and now, not a future health care reform plan. Currently, the law says that a non-profit institution like U of C MUST provide medical charity care to poor patients at least equal to the amount the hospital does not pay in property taxes. If they won't do so, then the Attorney General has the right to go after the hospital, and Lisa Madigan in some cases already has. If U of C chooses to not meet its obligations then fine it is free to do so. But then it should also lose its tax-exempt status. Period.

When all of the indigent patients on the south side start pointing their fingers at the U of C for abandoning them, I hope that someone goes back to see where this new "urban healthcare initiative" came from: It was authored by Michelle Obama....

Wrong -- these newest cuts by U of C are not related to that initiative. That initiative (That Obama was only a part of, not the creator of) was in fact a very good thing because it shifted non-emergent care out of expensive hospital ERs and into more cost-effiecient urgent care clinics. That saves money for everyone, including patients and taxpayers. What U of C is now doing, however, is shutting down its satellite clinics themselves, dumping those charity and Medicaid patients on clinics run by other institutions! Thoese patients have to get care somewhere, after all. Sure, just dump the problem onto the backs of other area hospitals and clinics. Cause them to shoulder the financial burden for U of C with all its hundreds of millions in endowments and maybe cause those hospitals in turn to collapse, causing a domino effect from facility to facility throughout the area.

Pull U of C's tax exemption.
