As I remember these metal gates surround those expensive homes in the Cabrini Green area. They slide back and forth horizontally as cars drive into the driveways. I haven't been around that area in awhile. How high are those black gates? 8'-9' high? It's like a metal fort around a home.

Get ready for the kid's family to sue the CHA, the city, and anybody else's deep pockets. Attention all residents that the ambulance chasers are on the scene. Where were the parents? A 3 year old must never be unsupervised at any time.

Every time I hear about a little one being injured or killed I think how awful it would have been to lose one of mine. Terrible thing to happen to the little innocent guy - having fun one minute and his life is gone in the next moment.

Where were the adults?

Why were they letting him and "other kids his age" swing on a rusty dis-repaired gate?

Tribune updated the story, at first I thought the gate was moving but the gate was still and closed. The kids were playing and pulling on it and this huge gate came off it's hinges and crushed this kid.

Yeah, you're right lawsuit. But not the CHA/City this time. It's the homeowner and whoever put that gate up.

No big houses @ Cambridge & Chestnut. This is still CHA. The new home's gates would not have rusted through within 10 years.

I feel bad for the little guy and his family.

Well his grandparents should have been watching his parents to make sure they were watching him!

It seems both parties are at fault. From what the news reported the mother was watching the child play, but she should have told her child not to play on the fence. The CHA is also responsible for not providing a safe environment

To assure all the people with comments we here in Cabrini Rowhouses are responsible parents we have felt comfortable with our kids playing on the back due to cars and street traffic.
I want to say thank you to all the people who help out if you had seen the situation it was a horrible incident.
The men of the row houses all ages
removed the gate from the body of the child it was over 20 minutes or more before the police show up. the first help we had was a fire truck.
RIP Little baby God bless you.

There were no signs tell if the fence
was broken the kids played around outside for years including my son he's 19 years old.

THe gate most likely didnt fall off its hinges, the hinges probably broke off where welded to the gate post. Also, most any gate, if enough kids (weight) are on it, jumping up and down, will eventually break. I know I would never let my kids play on a gate like that.
