Concerning: one, the admissions officers who rolled over and agreed to admit less qualified applicants, and instead of informing their bosses that they were going to stand on principle and refuse to engage in improper conduct even if ordered to do so by their supervisors; and two, the higher ranking people who ordered their subordinates to engage in improper conduct related to admissions. While some people will demand that those who engaged in improper conduct related to admissions be severely punished, however I have a much better idea.

Instead, I think those who engaged in improper conduct related to admissions, and including rolling over for bigshot and politically connected lawyers, should not be fired but instead, and since they are already fully and very well trained in how to break the law and stab the taxpayers in the back, should be given jobs that pay more more than their present jobs, and preferably jobs as building inspectors, judges, or aldermen, in other words the type of jobs where one of the virtual requirements is to roll over the politically connected and for bigshot backroom fixer influence peddling lawyers.

NOTE: The last sentence should read

"where one of the virtual requirements is to roll over FOR the politically connected"

Frankly withholding the names of the students doesn't make sense.

If you are going to receive benefits from shady dealings the fallout is public embarrassment.

The only reason to withhold any of the names is if they are still under the age of 18.

The Emperor's New Clothes are the same as the Emperor's old clothes.
What a waste of time and dangerous for anyone who testitifies. As long as Abner Mikva sits on top of this commission the only investigating being done is WHO SNITCHED! No one, particularly Mikva, likes snitches. Snitches end up being political-pinatas, getting whacked at every time they open their mouths or raise their heads up. Mikva is simply helping to identify who the politicians have to whack.
I know. I went to Mikva for help and all he helped with is to get me whacked even harder! Mikva is heinous. He'll listen in a grandfatherly-sage manner, talk to you like you were a beloved family member. Then Mikva runs to his masters, genuflects and ask them what he should do. If they say WHACK, Mikva will ask how much of a whacking you should get.
The Emperor's New Clothes are the same as the Emperor's old clothes.
Sneaky, petty and vindictive, is what I found when I asked Mikva for help. Mikva dosen't want to hear your complaint. Mikva wants to find out who the heck is complaining and then whack them.
BTW, in the original story of the Emperor's New Clothes, the kid who told the truth wasn't praised for his clarity of vision and honesty. The kid was whacked. The narrative was sanitized during the time monarchies were trying to keep favor with their minions. Whacking kids was no longer good PR since monarchs were literally losing their heads. So the cautionary tale of NOT contradicting power had to be changed from kid getting whacked for speaking the truth to power to kid going to Disneyland because he spoke the truth to power. Ah...the origins of SPIN and PUBLIC RELATIONS. The Emperor's New Clothes really are the same as the old clothes.
I wish I could be there to see Mikva put on his WISE AND BENEVOLENT MASK while listening to ya'll complain. Because when it's all over, he'll be right there with his cronies whacking you like a pinata.

Headlining this story for weeks. Must have been a slow period. By the way, is the Trib in bankruptcy yet?

If you know one of the Clout U. whiz kids, ONE OF THESE VERUCA SALTS, put it in code, like this:

the girl from Cupid Candies

Well, I never really was good at making anagrams.

The Trib is pummeling Clout U, gnawing at its bones!

What qualification did they use for the "peers"? Was it only ACT score? Grades? Activities? Essay?

Please explain

Pretty obvious who ranks where as it's on everyone's report cards and in a small private school it's common knowledge who gets accepted and who doesn't and where everyone stands - ACT and EC wise.
That's why they wanted these "special" students admitted long after the regular process to try and slide it through.

I'm sure the guidance counselors who would look at those results would have a pretty good idea what was going on.

My employer's son was admitted to U of I, even though he was failing at IMSA. Daddy got on the phone to his very influential friend, a judge in Springfield, and lo and behold, sonny boy was admitted! I had to hear ad nauseum about how Mr. Herman was a close personal friend of my employer and the judge and there was no question of sonny boy not getting admitted.

U of I admin, you CHEATED. You failed to live up to the same standards you require of students.

All involved should submit their resignations.

This is a really dumb article. U of I makes money from their athletic office as well as their development offices - not just tax funded. This is not new and certainly not limited to U of I.

Mark Winshel:

Thank you for your comments, except for your use of the word "Lawyer." Here in Illinois, that word is pronounced CROOK.

Also, please consider giving that "learned profession" wide latitude (especially if they attended a state sponsored School) as they are very enterprising individuals.

So out of the 8000+ kids admitted, you have aproblem with 11? Omg, what if these kids were involved in activities, clubs, wrote good essays, were better all around qualifies? Gasp!!! Who gives a crap? When does the trib write a story that they hired someone a little less qualified?

This episode, which you can be sure plays out across many college campuses, is just a great example of where our culture is going. No longer is it about generating actual, tangible results. It's all about who you know and what your connection is. More about style than substance now. So sad.
