Right on. Except that I never said Hitler waged a religious war. I just said he was a Christian. Religious wars were waged, a lot of them, before he came along. Fact is, though, he suffered from the influence of the religion, pro or con,(from his very devout mother) he was brought on.
The holocaust used religion as an end run around normally thinking people.
Hitler isn't listed as a monster because he started a war. Sans holocaust in 200 years he may have been regarded as a great leader and warrior. He took more of the globe than most.
You may be able to find handfuls of men who would be twisted enough to work the death camps. But killing 6 million people is no small task. This was a well staffed production. There is only one way to convince that many people that something that awful and horrifying was acceptable. Historically speaking, the will of god is the natural culprit.
I will say it again... the guy was crazy. But whether he himself believed it or not. He used their beliefs to do his work. At least the work that made him what he will always be remembered as.
