Paul Pillar served for 30 years as an analyst at the CIA, finishing his career as the national intelligence officer for the Near East and South Asia.
Question: At least the way the story is told by [journalist] Bob Woodward, is that even then the president is asking Rumsfeld to begin war plans.[Counterterrorism expert] Richard Clarke reports that [there is] lots of conversation about "Let's get ready." That's the fall [of 2001]. You're the Middle East guy for the Central Intelligence Agency, and you're not receiving any formal requests, any requests for information, any intelligence requests?...
Pillar
I did not receive any requests from a policy-maker on Iraq until about a year into the war. Now, this is to be distinguished from our military, which was doing a lot of the planning work and making many, many requests, usually at other levels, but some of my colleagues in the National Intelligence Council were involved in supporting the military planning. But no, I did not.
Q
A year into the war meaning when?

Pillar
Meaning close to mid-2004.... Remember, things like the infamous National Intelligence Estimate [NIE] on weapons of mass destruction, which was published in the fall of 2002, that was not requested by the administration; that was requested by Congress.

Q
Wait a minute. The Bush administration, the vice president, president, did not ever ask the Central Intelligence Agency for an intelligence assessment?

Pillar
I want to be precise. From my seat on the National Intelligence Council,... not just the CIA but the entire intelligence community,... no, I did not receive any request on Iraq.... There were other requests being made, from DIA to CIA, particularly by the military as they faced their very awesome job of planning.

Q
But not the vice president?

Pillar
No, sir.

Q
Not the president? Not the national security adviser?

Pillar

The course had already been set.

A Spy Speaks Out
Former Top CIA Official Tyler Drumheller On "Faulty" Intelligence Claims /
http://tinyurl.com/rle4x / April 23, 2006
"The policy was set. The war in Iraq was coming and they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy."

Tyler Drumheller CIA Ret.
(CBS) When no weapons of mass destruction surfaced in Iraq, President Bush insisted that all those WMD claims before the war were the result of faulty intelligence. But a former top CIA official, Tyler Drumheller — a 26-year veteran of the agency — has decided to do something CIA officials at his level almost never do: Speak out.
He tells correspondent Ed Bradley the real failure was not in the intelligence community but in the White House. He says he saw how the Bush administration, time and again, welcomed intelligence that fit the president's determination to go to war and turned a blind eye to intelligence that did not.

Since 2001, energy corporations have showered federal politicians with $115 million in campaign contributions—with three-quarters of that amount going to Republicans. This cash helped secure energy companies and their lobbyists exclusive, private access to lawmakers, starting with Vice-President Dick Cheney’s Energy Task Force, whose report provided the foundation of the energy bill passed by Congress and signed by President Bush on August 8.

Right on all counts. Except Clinton and Obama are intelligent and competent. What's more, being democrats, and though they are in league with oil and the big industry boys, they do stand up more for the middle class and the poor. THAT is the difference between Repubs and Dems. BTW, let's see what Obama decides on the XL pipeline. You do know that not one drop of that dirty oil is destined for US consumption. Flow it to gulf, refine it and export it all. Strictly profit-for-profit deal for the big oil guys. Little benefit for the citizens, but all the risks.

The American empire has not altered under Barack Obama. It kills as brutally and indiscriminately in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan as it did under George W. Bush. It steals from the U.S. treasury to enrich the corporate elite as rapaciously. It will not give us universal health care, abolish the Bush secrecy laws, end torture or “extraordinary rendition,” restore habeas corpus or halt the warrantless wiretapping and monitoring of citizens. It will not push through significant environmental reform, regulate Wall Street or end our relationship with private contractors that provide mercenary armies to fight our imperial wars and produce useless and costly weapons systems.

Dems ARE better if they are the lesser of two evils.

Obama did not start those two costly and disastrous wars, the Iraq one based on lies. I think he did pretty well with what he inherited, out of Iraq, soon, Afghanistan. And, as per Vietnam, the "bad guys", the enemy fought for over 12 years, will take over. All will have been for naught. Not Obama's words, "Mission accomplished". As for bailing out Wall street, and not Main street, yes, that is kinda hard to digest. BUT, the first bailout, the big one, occurred in November 2008, under GWB. And, was there a choice but to bail out the crooks if not only to save millions of jobs and avoid defaulting? You use the words "lesser evil". Well, I think bailing out the crooks was the lesser evil. And, what is "bailing out Main street"? Even the billions shelled out would've amounted to few thousand dollars per individual, individuals with maybe $2000 but no job, nothing. Bailout was blackmail, under GWB, these banks, brokers, KNEW that their modus operandi was unsustainable. Since when do you lend hundreds of thousands of dollars without checking if mortgagee even has a job, or verifying credit rating? They KNEW they'd be bailed out. But remember, all this greed and theft was not done under Obama.

As to social legislation, i.e., unemployment benefits, social security, annual leave, sick leave, maternity leave, workers' rights, some weak form of medicare, civil rights, minimum wage, etc, who brought those in? The Republicans? Correct me if I'm wrong, I think not. You're right. A lesser evil. And Nader is not completely right, and yes, he could've been completely wrong, and we would not be listening to him now. Look how wrong he was in being the third presidential candidate, specially in 2000. It gave the "in" to GWB. I loveD Nader up until he did that. That was selfish. He wanted to prove he was "holier than thou". He is not, was not. And I, even though I'm not American, will never forgive him, as good a man as he was, for tossing his hat in the ring and indirectly giving the nod to GWB.

I bet you can not qualify even one point you mentioned about. Like Bush bailed out Wall Street. Exactly what did Bush do to bail out Wall Street!!! The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 was a DEMOCRAT initiative passed by Congress just one month before the election of 2008.
"In the House Democrats voted 172 to 63 in favor of the legislation, while Republicans voted 108 to 91 against it." While in the Senate 41 Democrats voted for it while only 34 Republicans did. Bush was put between a rock and a hard spot if he did not sign it into law. So don't blame Bush on a DEMOCRAT INITIATIVE!!!
By the way, all your other points are the same, all wishy washy!!!

For Linktv org

I've watched all 3 tapes. Excellent, BUT, Nader reminds me of the political jousting I have with my brothers and friends when we get together. We have all the solutions, and we solve all the problems. However, and not unlike Nader, we have no party, no money and we have not put in the obligatory and necessary presence in the world of politics, from its grass roots to the top.

No one can solve our dilemma. We are too deeply embedded in cronyism and corruption. It costs way too much to be elected, and like it or not, those donors are not giving out of the goodness of their hearts. Returns, they want returns.

Nader knows how to solve all of it. But try all he might, it would never work, as industry and legislators are entrenched in their money-influence making ways. He has no party, industry bosses and most politicians hate him. Not fair, not good, not smart to put aside someone like that, but that's the way the world turns.

I know it's not a consolation, but look around you. There are 175 countries worldwide more corrupt than the US. That's a pretty good score when one considers the size of its economy.

Well, thank you for admitting that Dr. Hansen and Dr, Mann have not ruled out the Sun in Climate Change (cooling or warming)!
You do know that Solar Cycle #19, late 1950s through mid-1960s, was the hottest solar cycle ever recorded and that Solar Cycles #19-23, 1955-2000, where the hottest group ever recorded but, in your opinion had not affect in the Global Warming of the last-half of the 20th Century!!!
And you somehow think that because CO2 is now up to 0.0004% of our atmospheric gases that it is the ONLY cause of warming during that period. You do know that oxygen makes up almost 21% of our air and compared to CO2 there is over 5,000 times as much oxygen than there is CO2, don't you?!?
