Rogue : "But they are deterred by our overwhelming presence." No,they're not. Why would they wage war on the US anyhow?<quoted text>
But they are deterred by our overwhelming presence. Party of defence is to make someone thing three or four times before they challenge us. Would Japan have attacked Pearl Harbor unless they thought they would NOT be successful?
Japan had 17 operational aircraft carriers to our SEVEN (USS Langley had been downgraded to a seaplane tender) at the beginning of WWII and we had to cover two Oceans and they had to cover only the Pacific!
Oh, which country had the first purpose built aircraft carrier? Japan with the Hosho which was launched in 1922. Yes, Japan was third to get an aircraft carrier but the first to build one as a carrier.
Whereas our Lanley could do only 15 knots, the Hosho could do 25 knots and could keep up with all but destroyers when it was launch.
As to the war in the Pacific with Japan, it matters not how many carriers the US may have had, Japan, commodity and energy-starved, no doubt would've done the same. Don't forget, the Japanese thought the US carrier fleet was anchored at Pearl Harbor. Mistake. Grave mistake. Had they been anchored there, the war would've totally, well, almost, been altered (US and allies, released from the European theatre, would've won eventually), and I say almost almost because it would have lasted longer is all. 17 or 7, they were all supposed to be in Pearl Harbor. Instead, soon-to-be useless heavy cruisers and battleships were destroyed or disabled.
