Our own British forces were expected to hold back the Germans in 1940,so that the French could be evacuated,why they could not be depended on to defend their own country speaks volumes in itself.
The Germans were not afraid of a good fight.
We British have a love/hate relationship with the French.

1. Ask the Brits what they think about France's military in the numerous wars they fought against each other from the 12th to the 20th century, including the 100-yr war ;
2. Ask the Germans what they thought of the French "poilus" during the First world war, specially Maréchal Pétain's halting of the German advance at Verdun, which was the turning point of WW1. You guys joined in late 1917 while the French, Brit and Commonwealth troups had been at it since the fall of 1914;
3. French troops that were able to escape via Dunkerque and others from the colonies joined in the war effort, fought the Germans at the allies`s side right through to Germany. They were part of the landing in Normandy and never let up. Any tales of cowardice during that period? Ever heard of the French maquis, Jean Moulin, Chaban-Delmas, future PM of France? No? Google maquis.
Why this unprovoked attack on the French all of a sudden? Give me a hint. Jealous of their early successes in Mali? Not to worry, they'll get bogged down just like you did in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. Then you can have your favourite : negative triumph.
