God, you are dense. You don't know the difference between East and West Europe, do you? I explained to you why East Europe was different, its post-ward history, what happened to weapons sold on black market by departing Russians and demobilized east Europe military. Give East Europe another 20 years to catch up to the west and you'll see murder rates by guns equal that of western Europe. Fact is, Western Europe has seen nothing but democracies, very prosperous as compared to eastern Europe, and no oversupply of illegal arms that do drive citizens to crime because of unfavourable economic circumstances. You forgot to mention Australia, NZ, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Scandinavia, all democracies with strict gun laws like western Europe. I know you'll jump all over the Norway massacres of 77 people, a very sad but once-in-a-lifetime incident. In spite of that, Norway, pop 10 million, had 90 murders for the whole year, less than Atlanta.

Would be healthy for you to get out, travel the world a bit, see what makes OTHER peoples tick.

Well, citizens maybe called to protect more than their families. Do you know that every adult male in Switzerland has mandatory military training? And they take their FULLY-AUTOMATIC assault rifles home with them with their basic load of ammo. And after fulfilling their military obligation they keep their weapons!!!
But Switzerland does not allow crazy people to have weapons!!!

And obviously , you did not read all of my post telling you why Eastern Europe should not be included in the gun/murder statistics. Not now, as they were part of the Soviet Union hegemony until 1989 after which all hell broke loose. From that time on and up to today, do NOT put them in the same bag with Western Europe. In 20 years maybe, not now. You need to read up a bit, as you're not too too well informed, are you? Dear Poppo,
Thank you for donating to the Wikimedia Foundation. You are wonderful!
It's easy to ignore our fundraising banners, and I'm really glad you didn't. This is how Wikipedia pays its bills --- people like you giving us money, so we can keep the site freely available for everyone around the world.
People tell me they donate to Wikipedia because they find it useful, and they trust it because even though it's not perfect, they know it's written for them. Wikipedia isn’t meant to advance somebody's PR agenda or push a particular ideology, or to persuade you to believe something that's not true. We aim to tell the truth, and we can do that because of you. The fact that you fund the site keeps us independent and able to deliver what you need and want from Wikipedia. Exactly as it should be.
You should know: your donation isn’t just covering your own costs. The average donor is paying for his or her own use of Wikipedia, plus the costs of hundreds of other people. Your donation keeps Wikipedia available for an ambitious kid in Bangalore who’s teaching herself computer programming. A middle-aged homemaker in Vienna who’s just been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. A novelist researching 1850s Britain. A 10-year-old in San Salvador who’s just discovered Carl Sagan.
On behalf of those people, and the half-billion other readers of Wikipedia and its sister sites and projects, I thank you for joining us in our effort to make the sum of all human knowledge available for everyone. Your donation makes the world a better place. Thank you.
Most people don't know Wikipedia's run by a non-profit. Please consider sharing this e-mail with a few of your friends to encourage them to donate too. And if you're interested, you should try adding some new information to Wikipedia. If you see a typo or other small mistake, please fix it, and if you find something missing, please add it. There are resources here that can help you get started. Don't worry about making a mistake: that's normal when people first start editing and if it happens, other Wikipedians will be happy to fix it for you.
I appreciate your trust in us, and I promise you we'll use your money well.
Thanks,
Sue

As the rich flee France!!!
French paper says actor Gerard Depardieu wants to surrender passport in dispute over taxes; By Elaine Ganley, The Associated Press |
PARIS - Gerard Depardieu, one of France's best-known actors, has chastised his country's Socialist prime minister for insulting remarks over his decision to move to tax-friendly Belgium and said in an open letter published Sunday that he's turning in his passport.
The letter, which the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche said was penned by Depardieu, quickly propelled him into the spotlight, not for his acclaimed acting skills but for raising the sensitive issue of tax exiles as France looks to fill state coffers with a stiff tax on the rich.
"We no longer have the same country. I'm a true European, a citizen of the world," Depardieu wrote in the letter. He said his 2012 tax bill — 85 per cent of his revenue — is fully paid.
Depardieu, who turns 64 this month, said he has worked since the age of 14, first as a printer, and that in last 45 years he has paid €145 million ($190 million) in taxes.
"I hand over my passport to you and my social security card, which I have never used," the letter said, referring to Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.
Last week, Ayrault called Depardieu "pathetic" and "unpatriotic" for the actor's decision to move to Nechin, a Belgian village barely a mile (1.6 kilometres) across the border from Lille in northern France. Nechin has drawn other high-earning French residents.
The letter drew quick reaction but little sympathy.
Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti said she was "scandalized" by Depardieu's decision to turn in his passport. "French citizenship, it's an honour," she said on BFM-TV. "It is rights and duties, too, among them to be able to pay taxes."
Do you know Gérard Depardieu? He is your holier-than-thou big thug actor (I love him as an actor, he's prodigious,(so's his weight), funny, good actor) who garners huge salaries for his movies. As much a hero in France and Europe as is George Clooney in the States.

Unfortunately, Depardieu is greedy. Yes, he pays a lot of taxes, has boasted of so doing, paying more than $200 miilion Euros in his lifetime. Yet , he fails to tell how much he's made. He owns a 5000 sq ft mansion in the centre of Paris, no doubt worth millions, a vineyard in the south of France, and his wines sell like crazy. He's super rich, He eserves much credit, but his country has contributed to making him a VERY RICH MAN, subsidizing many of his movies (in smaller markets like France, govt MUST do that, as market is too small, specially in French) yet, he wants more. He doesn't have enough. He's GREEDY, like most rich men. Screw him. He'll still have to make movies in France, can't move his vineyard to Belgium so he'll still be paying the big tax. Good.

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
Boswell tells us that Samuel Johnson made this famous pronouncement that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel on the evening of April 7, 1775. He doesn't provide any context for how the remark arose, so we don't really know for sure what was on Johnson's mind at the time.
However, Boswell assures us that Johnson was not indicting patriotism in general, only false patriotism.

BTW, please supply statistics as to how many murders were committed in 2011 by hammers vs guns in the U.S. How ridiculous. In the military you maybe court-martialed for serious injuries or deaths if it is done by you negligence. Hillary Clinton has admitted responsibility in the Benghazi fiasco which lead to the deaths of four Americans. She too should be tried and for the very same reasons this Captain was tried!

Pilot Found Not Guilty in Airdrop Case
Dec 15, 2012; The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.|

A 10-officer court-martial panel on Friday found Joint Base Lewis-McChord pilot Capt. Jared Foley not guilty of dereliction of duty and reckless endangerment in the 2011 death of an Army paratrooper from the West Virginia National Guard.
Foley, 37, had faced 21/2 years in prison for approving an airdrop that led to the death of Sgt. Francis Campion, 31, of Hollidaysburg, Pa.
Foley closed his eyes and seemed to hold back tears when the colonel who led the court-martial panel read the verdict. Capt. Sarah Carlson, one of Foley's defense attorneys, could not stop from crying.
He embraced a courtroom full of supporters, most of them Air Force officers in flight suits or brown leather jackets.
