U.S. budget deficit tops $1 trillion for fourth straight year
By Rachelle Younglai | Reuters ľ 33 mins ago
>
WASHINGTON (Reuters)- The United States government reported a budget surplus for the final month of the 2012 fiscal year, but the tiny bump in revenues did not prevent the country's deficit from exceeding $1 trillion for the fourth year in a row.
The 2012 budget gap was $1.089 trillion, narrower than last year's deficit of $1.297 trillion because of higher corporate income tax receipts and less spending, the Treasury Department said on Friday.
The deficit equaled 7.0 percent of U.S. economic output, down from 8.7 percent last year, the department said. Economists generally consider deficits exceeding 3.0 percent of gross domestic product to be unsustainable in the long term.

In response to Rogue's presentation of an analysis of Argentine's economy along with identical possible consequences for the U.S.:

Poppycock. Edgerton doesn't know what she is talking about. Can't see the forest for the trees. So many factors she just ignored, others she is in the dark about. To compare Argentina's default with a possible US default is like comparing a Lada to a Rolls Royce. The numbers just don't compare. Economist Francomano is wrong relative to the U.S. Most world economies are still heavily dependent on a solvent U.S. economy and no matter how many dollars the U.S. treasury prints, no country in its right mind will allow it to default as they will see their exports whittle away and they'll be the first to default. Specially not its biggest mortgage holder, China. And it's so easy for right-wing fanatics to blame everything on socialism. Argentina's descent into hell was more because its exports stagnated, exports of agricultural goods and beef. Before WWII, Europe had not discovered chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Much of its fields lay fallow. That all changed, and in a matter of years, truly a record, Europe was exporting meat and agricultural products. During the war, it supplied both the Allies and the Nazis. Juan ┘Peron took off in 1949 for Spain the total stocks of the country's gold. ALL of it. Then, when he came back to power, he converted all of Argentina's workers' pensions into dollars, exported them all to American banks and valued the pensions in pesos which, after inflation at over 1000%, were worth zilch. Some Argentine pensioners, today, who earned good wages, either have no pension for years of toil or laughable ones of %$5. a month. So, to come back to post WWII, Argentina's exports subsequently dried up, and the slack was not taken up by the industrial sector. Some taking over of railroads and companies by the state did occur, yes, and they failed miserably, partially bringing on default 30 yrs later. BUT, and in the later 1980s, Carlos Menem became president. He nationalized EVERYTHIHG, even rural roads became toll roads. He sold out the country to money launderers and although Argentina had a hard time with its half-socialized econony until Menem came along, his foolish privatization of the whole of the economy and his heavy borrowing abroad brought about the country's collapse. Also, Argentina is in the top 10 most corrupt countries. That takes a toll.

No sources, all mine.

The colonel didn't want to know what Yossarian said to the other guy in the washroom, no, he wanted to know what Yossarian DIDN'T say to the other guy.
