Did your daughter grow up with Selena Gomez? Did you see Selena Gomez in pigtails when she was 10? If yes, I'd find it gross that you'd want to bang her. If not, well, I'd still find it gross that somebody older than 25 would want to bang a teenager, but less so.

I'm assuming she's heading off to college next. How many college students do you know thst choose to pay out of pocket for their own insurance when they are already covered under mom's? Makes no financial sense .

No, but your chief complaint seemed to be her age, not her relationship with my daughter.

Insurance billing statement? I can't remember the last time I got one of those. Maybe each ins co is different though.

Although with HIPAA, I'm sure she could request that her records be kept private no matter whose insurance she's on, since she's not a minor.

Once my girls turned 18 the explanation of benefit forms from insurance were sent to them in separate envelopes. That doesn't prevent Mom from opening the mail from Blue Cross etc. It is possible to go to places like Planned Parenthood and get this sort of care truly private. PP isn't the only program. In the north suburbs in Chicago there are other groups that fill similar needs always with sliding scales for payment. Some will make abortion referrals and others do not but the rest of the care is available-- birth control, OB/GYN health, information and educational materials etc.

Our insurance billing statements have become all but unreadable. All we tend to get nowadays is some bizarre, seemingly unrelated code + cost billed to insurance + cost allowed by insurance.

The mom would know her daughter had gone to the doctor and insurance had been billed x amount, but possibly not what had happened at the visit.

1: Everyone's coming down on this girl for not knowing she doesn't need her mother's consent for stuff anymore. Maybe she JUST turned 18 and Mommy's been going with her to every single doctor appointment all of her life...it happens.

She needs to make an appointment with her doctor and do whatever she wants. Personally I would get a different doctor because if her current doctor is used to discussing everything with her mom, he/she may be a little lax about HIPPA, which this girl should also know about. Her medical decisions and privacy are hers to control...by law and her mother needs to back the hell off.

2: Oh shut up. My son's best friend calls me "Momma," (note it's not "Mom") all the time. Trust me he knows who his mother is. He calls her "Mom" and me "Momma" even if we are in the same place at the same time...get a grip.

3: Still icky.

I'm not discussing what makes financial sense, I'm simply pointing out that she's an adult.

I suggest this girl wait 'til she gets to college and then get the vaccine through the school's health center.
I was thinking what Tonka said. At 18, I was on my parents' insurance. I like your idea about the student health center.

I download all the BCBS statements from the website. Considering mom knows all the daughter's vital info(dob, ssn), she could easily access any info she wants. It would not even occur to me to NOT continue to download my kids statements when they turn 18 unless thay made a point of telling me not to.

The statements are already addressed to the patient, but lets look at reality. From the time you were a child, maybe you parents gave you your mail to open of it looked like a birthday card. But if it wass obviously from the insurance company, or some other business related thing, they opened it and took care of it. When you hit 18, there's no buzzer that goes ogg telling mom that she should not open tge insurance envelope. Habits and patterns continue until challenged.

Really? I mean ok I get that, but when Chris turned 18,(actually about a month before) I had a talk with him telling him that he was going to be legally responsible for this kind of stuff and I wasn't going to interfere in his stuff (my mom did that...childhood issues) but anything he wanted me to still take care of for him (like dealing with Soc Sec for his dad's survivor benefits) I would do. I also told him that anything he wanted me to do, he would likely (in the case of SS and the medical people definitely yes) need to give them express permission to talk to me and tell me stuff.

He didn't want to do anything like that so really he just had to sign a couple of things that said "please tell my mom whatever she wants to know and she can make decisions for me." <shrug>

Then again, he knew he could trust me. He knew that my particular brand of crazy isn't deceptive or dangerous and that I would never take advantage of him. He also knew people who were like that (my mom...sister...etc) and so he had a really good frame of reference.

When I turned 18, my mom immediately started dumping every single piece of mail addressed to me on my desk.

LW1: She can't get the vaccine on her own because it costs money that she doesn't have. She should take Amy's advice to check with Planned Parenthood.

LW2: You are way out of line. You owe your son an apology.

LW3: There are certain people that are off limits, and your friend's parents definitely fall into that category, IMHO. I dated a friend's brother once. That was probably not the best idea but we all still get along.

My boyfriend and I were walking down the wharf last weekend and there were a group of older teen girls walking behind us. They were talking and giggling loudly and their conversation was inane. I can't imagine how any grown man could tolerate that long enough to get with one of them, but whatever floats your boat.
