If black women have their hair long & straight, dress in jeans & flannel shirts & wear running shoes, and have been doing so for the last 40 years, then I guess I'm copying their style. I think black women who straighten their hair are copying me.

Not as a percentage of the group, but as a straight number, that's true.

Nah, only the blonde ones embrace being "thick", and I agree few of them actually are.

Now this opens up a real tin of worms as to who is copying whom.
Did the "Black womens style" evolve from them having copied white womens fashions for decades prior?
Or were white fashions forced upon the black community because of the inequities of society, then black women broke free from the yokes, keeping the such items as they chose to?

Either way, it takes far more knowledge of, and interest in, the fashion industry than I have to debate this. So I won't.

To quote you directly. "DO THE HISTORY".Check out what is, and has been happening for the last couple of hundred years in NewYork, London, Milan, & Paris.

Taking the ideas of others and twisting things up a bit does not give you style. Creating something new does.

In Summary:

White women copying black women?

"Oh no they didn't!" <<rocking head from side to side, and waving one extended index finger>>

Actually, no. The questions I raised were real questions, along the thought process of where do we draw the lines?

Personally, I have no doubt that "white" fashions have influenced almost all races, but how much of it the influence is due to taste, how much to it being forced on a people for generations, and how much to availablity of no other, I don't know.

Now the pendulum is winging the other way, and other fashions are becoming increasingly dominant. I'm perfectly happy to concede that since the playing field has been largely levelled, this is all due to taste.

But the crux of the matter to me is when does "being influenced by" transgress into "copying"?

TO me this question is pretty much a chicken and egg scenario.

White people have been conquering the world and taking what they wanted for millenia, including fashion ideas. Equally they have been imposing their own will, and fashions on others.

So has "black" fashion in this country evolved from "white" fashion, or did it develop on it's own, independently?
Can it be claimed that it has copied "white" fashion?
I don't honestly know.

So are things now a rip-off, or a reclamation?

I honestly have no clue. But I will say that when one thinks of the fashion centers of the world, the names of cities with a historically "black" majority population, don't spring to mind.
I don't hear stories of the glitteratti rushing to Nairobi, or Dar Es Salaam, for fashion week.

Let's all be real here. White women copy everything that a black woman does. They copy their style, culture, accents, and the way they carry themselves. It is becoming more and more obvious nowadays. They even try to get the darkest tans that they can spray on just to be like them. They are somewhat envious of the hip style that black women have.

Lol these comments are so hilarious. Whites use ebonics everyday, but make fun of it. Whites think they created a style because it's new to them, when it's old to us. Even their racist sayings about our culture are outdated. More avaliable resources, hence able to replicate & mass market, no true creativity... Copy & Paste.

I think black girls copy us white girls. We grow long beautiful hair and then get copied by your weaves, micros, Nikki Minaj wanna-bes. Mine is natural, so for you to get that natural length, most likely you got a nappy head underneath

Two notable differences in Chicago.

1. Black women are street tough, while white women need their boyfriends to protect them.
2. I've never seen a white woman with the afro look, but have seen black women with blue or green contact lens and hair dyed blonde or red.

I like black women better for reason number 1, but don't think white women try to imitate blacks in any way. It's the other way around.
