If members of the church hierarchy who covered for abusive priests are never held accountable by the church and/or if they never offer to resign, which would be the most honorable and admirable thing many could do at this point, how can the church ever expect to fully regain public respect and trust?

True, but at least in the Protestant sects, ministers are not spokespeople for God. Catholic priests are supposed to be held to an extremely high esteem. I think the best question of all: What kind of God would allow this to happen in the first place.

On and on the Catholic scandal goes.

We sat through a season of Cardinal George doing his sackcloth and ashes kabuki when the Daniel McCormack story broke. Now we get to read his deposition and hear the story about how he lobbied to get another priest out of prison.

We've been hearing about priests sexually abusing kids for 20 years. The crimes go way further back than that, but the wall of silence started to crumble 20 years ago.

What other institution would have a track record like that and still be tolerated by society? If this was the Boy Scouts or the 4H Club, Scoutmasters and club leaders would face lynch mobs.

Sure this kind of thing goes on in other churches. But other churches root out the troublemakers, or go under as members lose trust. This bunch is loyal to the Institution first and foremost, above all else.

If Cardinal George had a shred of integrity, he would have resigned after the McCormack fiasco. But he and his fellow bishops hang onto power and position, loyal to their organization like Tony Soprano's family was loyal to theirs. And they'll tell you they are God's annointed. They are there because God wants them to reign over the church.

The most galling thing about this latest chapter? George keeps saying no collection money is being used to pay these settlements. Who does the think he's crapping? My grandparents' generation were Catholics when they came over from the old country. They were dirt poor, but they worked very hard and supported their church as best they could.

With their money in those days, the church bought land, built buildings, and accumulated property which through the years grew to be worth millions of dollars. It's THEIR contributions George today liquidates for settlement money. Millions and millions of dollars, with no end in sight. Thank God they are not alive to see it and listen to the Cardinal who still lives in his fancy Lincoln Park mansion.

Shame on the Catholic hierarchy, including Cardinal George. And shame on all his minions, clergy and lay employees alike, who have enabled the sickness and secrecy and sin that has damaged so many trusting and innocent children.

Truth Hurts,
Very intelligent points. What strikes me is that Cardinal George's deposition was released as part of the settlement so I see nothing honorable in lawfully enforced 'transparency'.

The best way would be to allow priests to marry. This would expose 99% of the ones who are homosexual.
Does this scientific study also hold true for the general population? I have been divorced now for 15 years and enjoy my total independence. Am I a closet homosexual and don't even know it?

How can you have a guy like George as head of the church?

He needs to GO!

I hold everyone from local priests all the way to the Pope liable for this atrocity. Cardinal George, knowing what was happening (hoping it was "contained"?) should be let go as well. The Catholic church tells married couples it's a sin to use birth control yet allows child predators. My faith has been forever shaken to its core.

I've read the deposition and, according to the written testimony, Cardinal George shouldn't be in charge of anything more complicated than a lemonade stand since he "doesn't know, he wasn't told, he never saw", and this goes on for hundreds of pages.

The moral bankruptcy of the Catholic Church has never been more evident. These were CRIMES they covered up for years. Let's say the priests beat up these kids...wouldn't they have reported the beatings right away? But when the attacks are sexual, they do a Watergate cover-up. George says he takes the blame - that, too, is phony lip service unless taking the blame means resigning.

Honestly, what is all the fuss? So a few bad kids got fondled and few good priests got some much needed 'attention'. Ask yourself,'What Would Jesus Do'?

The American catholic church has sabotaged all of Christianity. To stand for decades by while their leaders preyed on kids is beyond belief.

Why is the leader of a criminal conspiracy not in prison? The justice system has failed us by letting the civil courts handle this matter. I call BS on his disposition, as usual the church got their way by only giving a partial confession "behind closed doors". We deserve to see how his story would change if told on the stand, under oath in open court proceedings. Shine a spotlight on these scum bags and don’t defer to a "higher power" to hold them accountable for their actions.

There never was and never will be any member of the hierarchy disciplined by the Vatican that would lead to prosecution of any kind.

The punishment for Sodom’s sins was utter destruction. The judgment for their sins was that they were turned over to vile affections and to a reprobate mind which evidenced itself in their homosexuality. Homosexuality does not bring judgment, homosexuality is judgment.
Let us look at the stream of cause and effect in Romans the 1st Chapter.
1. Men and women reject God first. They do not glorify Him as God and they are not thankful to Him. Like all worldlings and religious atheists, they will not have God as God.
2. They become vain in their imaginations, so their foolish hearts (minds) are darkened. Their decision making process is corrupted. They cannot see things aright.
3. Based on their faulty logic, darkened reasoning, and wrong perception of reality, they profess themselves to be wise, when they are really fools. They begin to rationalize worshipping God in ways that He has not authorized, and in ways that He has personally banned. They begin to make images to worship, believing that these things represent things in heaven and things God has made. They believe they honor and serve God, when in fact the opposite is true.
4. God then gives them over to the uncleanness of their own ways, to seek and fulfill the lusts of their hearts.
5. These who have changed the truth of God (His Holy Worship and His commanded ways of serving Him) into a lie, and who now worship the idols of their own hands instead of the Creator of the Universe, are given over to their wicked lusts to dishonor their bodies one with another.
6. Because of what has gone before, God has given them over to misuse their bodies in an unholy, abusive, barbaric, disgusting and unseemly way; men with men and women with women.
7. Due to these sinful judgments that are brought upon them, they receive in themselves the payment for their wickedness. God has judged them, and they are left to themselves to do wickedly with no hope and no pardon.
8. They have now been fully judged and given over to a reprobate mind, which brings on those activities that naturally follow reprobation; “unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful”.
9. This judgment has come upon NOT ONLY those who do these things, but upon those who assent, give approval to, agree with, or accept, them who do them.
Homosexuality is the product (or effect) of false worship, denying the Truth of the Bible, pride, haughtiness, vanity, idolatry, etc. Homosexuality is the natural end of Catholicism. Why do you think that homosexuality, pedophilia and other vile behaviors are epidemic in the Roman priesthood?
Many of you have cause and effect out of whack. Surely God destroyed New Orleans because of its wickedness and rampant homosexuality. But New Orleans was homosexual because New Orleans was Catholic. New Orleans’ Catholicity and her other wicked attributes were inextricably linked.
Get this straight… New Orleans was the most purely Catholic city in existence outside of Rome. Where Catholicism is left unchecked by the existence of true Christianity, it very quickly devolves into homosexuality, perversion, paganism, and death worship
When you plant a crop, when you tend that crop, when you water and nurture that crop, then you should not be surprised when you reap what you have sown. When you sow the wind, you will reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7). When you see a people steeped in unbiblical ritual and spiritual wickedness, and then you see that people move into homosexuality and perversion, then you can conclude that God’s judgment has already passed upon that people. The judgment phase has passed, and only the punishment phase is left to unfold
