So they get paid to sleep. How safe is that if you work 24 hour with no sleep. It's a bad a drunk driver

Otherwise they must hire more workers for three shifts and for weekends off and vacations and sick days.
----------
Some locations have volunteers (on call). No one lives at the station.

I think an all-volunteer dept is possible even in big cities. I also believe many of the big high-rise fires are started by pro-govt govt employees to help continue to justify the high cost of these big police and fire depts.

People could easily be trained to handle fires. Society can be 'regularly' trained to help each other.

Big fire depts and police depts have become bullies, our worst enemies.

So you have people that will be working 24 hours some times with. No sleep and some that are coming or going to their 2nd job, that is not a union job, but they say they are pro union, if we are paying them how safe is for someone to roll out out of bed and try to wake up that just adds adds more time

We could easiy eliminate paid fire fighters and replace them with trained volunteers.

And I don't want paramedics up 24+ hours going on emergency calls, yes most of them run all day and nite, we don't have cops working 24 hours a day,

You people are totally clueless to the ways that fire departments operate. I will never understand why people that do not work in this occupation always are posting nonsense. Volunteer firefighters in Chicago? They run approximately 600,000 calls per year or 1643 calls per day, yeah volunteers can handle that. This world is so full of stupid people

LOL !

People have been taught to call daddy for every little thing. Fire trucks are used to check on fender-benders and bums. We are forced by law to do nothing or be arrested for saving victims.

Anyone can put out fires including fires on the 100th floor of the Sears Tower. Paid fire fighters are not first responders, they're last repsonders.

Give volunteers the equipment, and they will save anyone anytime, including dogs and bears and helpless horses.

The East Coast has many volunteer fire departments, and even volunteer fire companies, many people volunteer. At this occupation, and have real jobs, your doing a job that many will do for free

And safe is it for people to be up 24 hours, with no sleep, many ambulances in Chicago run none stop, that is unsafe then we have to worry about going to a second job with no sleep

IL has a great many volunteer fire departments outside the Chicago and major suburb areas. As far a I know all states do. Mayberry RFD stands for Mayberry Rural Fire District- that's all volunteer.

Clearly none of you has been in a firehouse other than to look at the trucks. They have dorm type sleeping quarters and a kitchen almost always on the 2nd or upper floors. They work a 24 hour shift and sleep when they can during the shift. The fire pole is how they quickly get from the dorms on the upper floor to the garage/truck level.

Tory does not disclose where he comes from, but around Chicago and Northern IL, we don't send firetrucks to a fender bender unless there is a gasoline spill in which case they deal with the hazardous materials (HAZMAT) issues.

Tory can think what he will but if my house is on fire, I would rather not have amateurs attempting to save me and my stuff-- but to each his own

I live outside Chicago. In my area, if you expose police and fire they target you for life. They kill your kids, blacklist you from any employment, and you won't be safe driving the roads. Police have thousands of collaborators who will ram your car (t-bone you). If you lay there half dead, no one will help you. You will have to take yourself to the hospital, and at the emergency room, cops will tell doctors not to save your life.

America is a police state. Fire inspectors create rules that make it easy for them and cops to evict you from your home. This is why we need a volunteer fire dept.

If you support the police state, then paid fire fighters will save you (at a very high price). If you don't support the police state amatuers will save you (for free).

I'm simply amazed that you think these people stay awake for their full 24 hr shift. There is a reason for the bunks. They rest when needed. It's like saying, "why are there people on a aircraft carrier for months at a time". The lack of logic and knowledge and on point conversation above is absolutely ridiculous. If you don't know anything about the situation, maybe you should ask rather than make a dumbass assumption. Freaking idiots. Investigate before you speak and it's better to not speak at all than open your idiot mouth and remove all doubt that we are failing as a country.

many Ambulances in chicag run none stop for 24 hours stright as well as many fire companies, how safe is it to operating a Emergency vehicle being up 24+ hours, as well as the ones that not even all the way a wake trying to respond to a call, we should not pay people to sleep,
