DANA POINT, Calif. - While the original off-season emphasis for the Cubs was on acquiring a left-handed-hitting outfielder, starting pitching is taking on more importance. Read more

Cubs need to try and grab peavy! Let Ryan go! Kerry one year deal with incentives! As far as left handed hitting there is only one who i would get and that is Barry Bonds! The one person who could turn cubs long wait of a World Series! Hey why not! Yes He has a huge cloud over him! I see it as this he would be forever the man who finally gave the cubs fans what they have oh so long for! Yes he's old! Now that would be a story for the ages! Go Cubs!

Let dempster go,it looks like he wants more money if he wants to test the market, i would rather waste the money on proven talent like peavy or sabathia.

If they could get Peavy for Pie, Cedeno and ANY 3 players from their system, including Vitters, they have to jump all over it!!!

Gee, Phil Rogers recently wrote that the cubs could not afford to lose GM Hendry to Seattle because Dempster and Wood had such deep man-love for jimbo that they would follow him out of town. Looks like they might leave anyway. So much for that theory. Maybe they'll get Peavy, but wait, Hendry's farm system is barren. Guess jim will have to do the only thing he knows--grossly overpay for free agents.

If I had my choice i would do evrything I can to get peavy, If you going to pay Dempster the kind of money that you pay a number 1 starter than go after Peavy who in my opinion is a better pitcher with better command.

You've gotten it right on both Mr. Rogers and Mr. Hendry.

It would be tough to let Dempster go. He did everything right to get into the playoffs. Too bad he folded like a cheap suit when the Cubs needed a decent performance in a short series. Whatever Dempster asks for you know it's going to be more than he's worth. That's just the price of starting pitching in MLB.

Beware, repeat beware, overpaying for a veteran starting pitcher coming off a free-agency year completely out-of-character with the rest of his career.
This is not Greg Maddox we're talking about here.

"Quality" pitching? Kerry "Gofer Ball" Wood? Forget him, let him leave. He's been overrated for years, and made a fortune while delivering little. As far as Wood being the "closer", forget that too. He doesn't have the ability, control, or temperament for the job.

You can't blame Dempster. Pitchers are going to be scarce, new ownership coming soon and he's riding a wave.
On the flip side you can see Hendry's reluctance because he loaded himself up with long term contracts. Don't need anymore Sorianos, Kuskes, Derik Lees, Zambronos, and Ramieriz's to win in the postseason. Smart money says Yankees make good offer followed by L.A, Cardinals, and possibly Giants.

Any chance the Cubs can re-sign Dempster AND trade for Peavy? That would work for me.

Nice idea, Tgon... But the Cubs aren't going to get Sabathia. I doubt they'll even try. The time to have tried to get him was last season, when the Brewers snatched him.

They can't let go of Dempster. They already named a street after him in Skokie.

Scouts have already said the Cubs don't have the players, and seeing as how Pie and Cedeno are the only 2 good players in their minor league system, what freaking difference would "ANY 3" other players make?

Sure, the Pods will take such crap from the Cub's farm system in exchange for Peavy. Just like the Cubs were going to win the World Series last season! LOL!

Pie, Cedeneo, another young position player and Harden in the deal. Harden's contract is relatively small for a starting pitcher.

I like Harden but he has "Mark Prior" written all over him.

I'd leave Peavy right where he is unless the price for him comes way down, his numbers away from the majors biggest park are less than stellar.

He's worth having, but not for the price that's being reported.

I won't even hazard a guess as who to pick up because as with all other suggestions posted here it wouldn't make any difference. But if Dempster and Wood want to leave let them go and replace them with best you can.
